  • Perhaps one of the most iconic melodies in 19th century orchestral literature, the plaintive solo from Antonin Dvorak’s 9th Symphony, the New World Symphony, is just as relevant today as it was over one hundred years ago.
    Born on September 8, 1841, Antonin Dvorak began his musical studies on organ, violin, piano, and viola before he began his composing career. He is best known for incorporating folk music themes into his works and was championed by fellow composer, Johannes Brahms.
    Written in 1893, his “Symphony No. 9 in E minor” premiered with the simple subtitle, “From the New World”. Dvorak composed this work, his last symphony, while living in New York City after emigrating from Czechia. The work is most famous for the poignant melody played by the English horn in the second movement. Reminiscent of a folk-song, the solo hints at the composer’s longing to return to his homeland.
    Several years after the work was premiered by the New York Philharmonic, lyrics were written to the tune of the solo:
    “Goin’ home, Goin’ home, I’m a goin’ home;
    Quiet-like, some still day, I’m jes’ goin’ home.
    It’s not far, jes’ close by,
    Through an open door;
    Work all done, care laid by,
    Goin’ to fear no more.
    Mother’s there ‘spectin me,
    Father’s waitin’ too;
    Lots o’ folk gather’d there,
    All the friends I knew,
    All the friends I knew.
    Home, I’m goin’ home!”
    This work became the identity of 20th century American music, an anthem for those who felt displaced or faced uncertainties. While the large symphonic work is still performed today in the world’s finest concert halls, Dvorak’s simple, folk-song melody is also an appropriate tribute at memorial services. This week, we remember and honor those who gave their lives on September 11, 2001, and, in the midst of world turmoil, we can rest in the comfort that music brings as we navigate this “New World”.

    Absolutely beautiful. I was doing a cross word puzzle earlier. And the question was, who was the composer of The New World Symphony? I went back in time to when my brother introduced me to classical music and I immediately went to Dovrak.
