    Best in-depth user review and comparison between the Viltrox and Nikon on TH-cam 🤟🏽. It’s hard for me to consider any third party lens over Nikons versions but you did an excellent job showcasing the Viltrox.

      Thank you so much TJ Fox. Appreciate the positive vibes. This lens is a great option for people that want quality at a fraction of the price. It even has an aperture ring and the dial feels good. Ofcourse, not going to out perform the Nikon but thats to be expected.

    Hi Vahagn - another killer video my brotha - Rock N' Roll! My thoughts on what you showed us:
    The Viltrox seems to be a very good lens especially when you consider the price of $400 USD.
    That said, what I specifically noticed in your video and in my own use of the Nikon 35 1.8 S lens (which I was just using last weekend at a wedding) is the following: The Nikon is very sharp and has an awesome rendering ability that is hard to match. The Viltrox was close, but I do not think that it is quite there - that said, the Viltrox is definitely good enough for most users and if I were on a budget with respect to photography equipment I would definitely consider it.
    However, as a pro shooting at events with this type of lens (35mm 1.8) I would definitely stick with the Nikon - the rendering is just amazing. Another shooter at the wedding I was just at, was shooting with the Canon 35mm 1.8 for RF and the Nikon lens was clearly superior when looking at the photos side by side - both in tone/contrast as well as sharpness. The Canon is a few hundred dollars less and has closer Macro abilities so as with everything there is a trade off, but just for IQ the Nikon took the prize.
    The other thing that I learned from your video here specifically is that the Nikon has a faster T Stop at 1.8 than the Viltrox at 1.8. The Viltrox photos appeared to be about a third of a stop darker at the same F stop meaning that the light transmission through the Viltrox lens is inferior to the Nikon (this is what T-Stop indicates). This is VERY important - especially if you are an event shooter and shooting in low light. A third of a stop difference means you can keep your ISO just a little lower with the Nikon and get even cleaner images (cleaner than you already would due to its superior IQ) just because the ISO (applied gain) can be slightly lower.
    As such, for professional use - especially at events with low light - the Nikon is the clear winner, but for general use and the majority of casual/hobbyist photography, the Viltrox appears to be an excellent choice for those that are looking to save a little money and maybe put that money toward another lens!
    Thanks again Vahagn for an informative and entertaining video!
    Rock N' Roll!

      Great observation and info here. Yes it appears that way now that I look at it with regards to images both at 1.8. Very interesting indeed. Honestly I was expecting allot less of the viltrox. going in I had low expectations givin the first time using this company for optics. but. after seeing the results I was very pleased and like you said, at $400 dollars. new price. I will recommend this lens. Thanks again for the very informative comment Baron.

    Bravo for this very complete review with different examples. It's very smart to have done this because it's more concrete than brick wall tests! I was hesitating between the Nikon and the Viltrox, thanks to your precise work I will go for the Viltrox. For $350, I'm not risking much (it just needs to be consistent from one lens to another). Thanks & bravo for this first review!

    Hi Vahagn: I just discovered this video even though it's 2 yrs. old. I have several Viltrox Z lenses now. My first was the 85 mm f1.8, the second was the 20 mm f2.8 and the third was the the 16 mm f1.8 and I am very happy with all them, especially at their price points.

    I really enjoyed this comparison video and I appreciate your efforts putting it together. I think for the average amateur enthusiast like myself the Viltrox is a great option. That said, the edge sharpness and the almost 3 dimensional quality of the Nikon images makes it worth every penny. Love the idea of community and staying positive about our love of photography! Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more of your videos!

    Im really happy that the Viltrox makes apc-s lenses, because a crop sensor with a 1.4 aperture, that’s huge light combination together. And I really like a 1.4 So im gonna wait when the full frame 1.4 are coming in the future from the third party. Glad that Viltrox celling the lenses for reasonable price and quality has well!

    Thanks for this video. I have watched closely on my 27" 5k iMAC display and to my eyes, there is no comparison. I see the Nikon sharper throughout all the side by side images you show in the video and certainly wouldn't get the Viltrox just to save a bit of money. I shoot with a Z9 & a Z8 and, having watched your video, wouldn't compromise the quality of the image for the difference in price between the two lenses you are reviewing.

    V great review and comparison! I have an opinion but in full disclosure I have glaucoma but real bad not like white-cain time or anything. But I miss some things that other people catch like the aberrations. To me I thought that the viltrox did a lot better in sunlight then in the darkness of the library. The baby shower really showed off its strength. Half the price and that close it could sway a lot of people. Now I'm going to have fun with you. Oh yeah you're a rock and roll dude so when you start unboxing what do you go with the banjo! My question to you is was the accordion or the harpsichord busy at the moment? Vendetta was good but the jazz piano was more me! Just saying and I thought the shoutout to Matt Irwin and frames was cool! I saw Ryan Terry yesterday roasting Jared polin if you get a chance look in. Again great segment thanks for the hard work! And no reply please it's a time thing for you. I understand.

  • @kaminobatto
    @kaminobatto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    After looking at half of the shots (I'm at 22:48 now) I can confidently say that, yes, there is definitely a very clear color temperature difference between the two lenses. And yes, it's definitely cooler on the Viltrox. Moreover, and this is something I'm almost certain of as well, I can confidently say that the Viltrox has a higher T-Stop value than the Nikon, not a huge difference though (maybe 1/3rd of a stop or a bit more?) but it definitely lets in less light to the sensor than the Nikon.
    Update: I just finished watching the full video, and I know that coincidentally Vahagan said that the aperture was off at the mark I indicated above; however, the observation about T-Stops was not on that phot in particular but after seeing a number of shots. That said, maybe the difference is even less than 1/3rd of a stop in T-Stops but to my eye there is definitely a difference there. As for sharpness, the Nikon is noticeably sharper around the edges but again it's double the price. The CA and bokeh quality are also better on the Nikon, and the noise inside the bokeh balls was quite noticeable as well. Now, the ultimate questions is, is the performance worth the price difference of the Nikon? For me, yes, it does. That said, the character of both lenses is almost identical in my opinion and if you're not too bothered by the shortcomings of the Viltrox, it's a solid option that does the job if you'd rather spend the extra $400 somewhere else or just save it for that matter.

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another great observation here. Thank you Yamen. If I was a Z shooter and wanted something a but cheaper in price I would totally buy this lens. Its solid, Its built well and hey,, it even has an aperture ring. As far a quality , you are spot on. the focus speed on the viltrox was impressive aswell. This lens over achieved in my book. I was expecting less.

    Nice job Vahagan . The viltrox represents a great value . However , I prefer the Z glass . It cost more, but I appreciate the weather sealing and piece of mind knowing Nikon will not brick it by maybe releasing a firmware update to target third party lenses . However , for casual photography it might be worth it . Lastly , I got my Z 35 1.8 S for $650 refurbished and it’s my favorite Z lens .

    • @Vahagraphy
      @Vahagraphy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really, brick it? Can they do that? that would suck big time. Imagine, one firmware update and the lens stops AF. . Yes the Z glass is head and shoulders above. but for APS-C primes, I feel for the ZFC the viltrox is the way to go. 1.4 and prime. DX lenses. something Nikon does not offer right now for this system.

If you put that in relation to the price this is a great offer. I allready own the Viltrox 85mm Z lens and I think I'll go for that one as well, allthough the 40mm f2 Z lens might be an interesting alternative as well. They are so close in many ways… finding differences is like splitting hairs. I will say the z series 1.8 lenses are almost what I would call reference lenses. That large z mount gives Nikon glass edge to edge sharpness. I have the 50mm f1.8 and that’s one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever shot. It’s just about perfect. The 35 1.8z seems to be in that same department. I’ve been debating getting the 35mm f1.8 z or the Tamron 35 F1.4 f mount with the ftz adapter. Can you possibly review the Tamron ? It’s supposed to be the best lens they have ever made. All that said the viltrox looks like a bargain but the Nikon does seem to have the edge but like you said not by a lot. If cost was a primary concern I would get viltrox and not feel like I was settling at all. Great review as usual ! Enjoyed the location you chose as well….nice choice !

    • @baronsilverton6504
      @baronsilverton6504 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John - I have both the 35mm 1.8 S lens as well as the Tamron 35mm 1.4. They are both incredible. I would say that the Tamron is just a little better - it is truly spectacular and yes probably the best that they ever made but just a hair better than the Nikon and it has the brighter aperture at 1.4.
      The downside of the Tamron is that it is larger and heavier (if that matters to you - it does to me for events but not for portraiture). Also, the Tamron has to use the FTZ adapter (obviously as it is am F mount lens). It works pretty well on the FTZ (almost native), but I would say that the Nikon is slightly more responsive - just a hair.
      I just shot a wedding last weekend and used the Nikon 1.8 S as one of the lenses and I do have to say it is incredible. Another photographer used the new Canon 35mm 1.8 for RF and the Nikon lens was clearly the better lens when comparing the shots - richer colors and sharper. That said, the Canon lens is a couple hundred less and has closer Macro abilities so as with everything there are trade offs.
      As to the Nikon 1.8 S vs the Tamron 35mm 1.4 it is a difficult decision if you are only getting one (as I mentioned, I have both and use both for different use cases). I would say that it does come down to that (use case). If you care/need light weight and smaller definitely go with the Nikon. If you don't care about light weight and size then the Tamron is a very tough lens to beat at any price point in the 35mm market

      Hi Barron, yes that was helpful ! Extremely helpful. Weight and size I’m not worried about in general but do plan in the future to get an F1.8 version for those very reasons and will probably go with the Nikon based on your thoughts and my own experience with the 50mm F1.8. My God that lens is amazing. I like faster glass but wow that lens is amazing. I’m gonna pick it up the Tamron this week. Thanks for your thoughts !

      @@johndaubney7311 NO problem John. BTW my name is spelled Baron with one R - no big deal - people make that mistake all the time, but since we are friends now, I just wanted you to know :)
      You will not regret the Tamron lens - it is super sharp and just a great lens all around.
      The Nikon 35mm 1.8 S is also great as mentioned considering its size and weight. That said, I do not want you to get the wrong ideal: the 50mm 1.8 S lens that you have and refer to is an astounding lens and likely the best of the entire line of 1.8 S lenses from Nikon (the closest competitor is the 85mm 1.8 S lens - but sadly this lens focus breaths where the 50 does not - so the 85 isn't as good of a video lens).
      I bring this up because I would not want you to get the 35mm 1.8 S lens expecting that it is the 35mm version of the 50mm 1.8 S - it is close - I might even say very close - but it is not 100% there. There is something about that 50mm 1.8 S (as you already know) that just has that "wow" factor. I'd say the 50mm 1.8 S is a 5 star lens (out of 5 stars) - on this scale the 35mm is 4.75 stars - still incredible but a slight step down from the perfection of the 50mm 1.8 S,
      Enjoy your new Tamron 35mm 1.4 - its a beast and will get you the shots you want for now :)

      Thank you John. Viltrox doing good things means that this will help Nikon camera sales. For those users that have a certain budget and want to buy a z6ii or z5 z7ii this is a welcome sight, even for the beginner photographer, this is a welcoming, Now they can use a lens that will work on a starter z50 camera and not have to pay thousands of dolllars for this.

    In the image that you couldn't spot a difference the Z lens clearly have more resolution, and seems just a little bit brighter, maybe half a stop? which is expected, it's a more expensive and better quality glass. I'd say a bettter comparison would be between F Mount 35 mil with FTZ, since in the used market they are probably about the same price.

    Nice video. Just IMO. I think the Nikon seemed to be a bit sharper most (but not all) of the time, especially along the edges. The one thing that shocked me is how well the Viltrox dealt with perspective distortion - MUCH better than the Nikon. I agree with your assessments though - very close on most things, with Nikon a bit better on the "focus" parts. I think this type of comparison under tough lighting conditions are a better view of the lens capabilities. I'd be interested in some stopped down comparisons at some point too. Studio work is good at some things, but real world is where a lot of the rubber meets the road. The mount/unmount issue is interesting too. Appreciate you putting the time into this. TY.

    You get what you pay for. If you don't need more, significantly closer focusing distance, greater maximum magnification, less focus breathing, better T value, better weather sealing and much sharper at f/5.6 and above (especially in corners), then the Viltrox seems a great value and great choice. You really also need to do comparisons at narrower f-stops where much 35mm photography is shot and where comparative differences often appear. Otherwise, great effort.

I decide to buy this Viltrox, 35mm is not my favorite length, that why the lense no need to be a best one, but is important to have it. I bought second hand for a 200£ what is a brilliant price. No point to spend to much on lenses what we not gonna use a lot. Prefer longer lenses, that why I not gonna save and buy for a 1000£ Sigma Art 105/1.4. A lot of the decision factor seems to be the cost difference. But as a true Nikon user, it's hard to use anything other then Nikon glass. I think the half/price difference does not justify the reason to get the Viltrox, Maybe if the difference was 1,000 or more my mind might change.

      It all depends on the person and situation. If you know me, I prefer the original. the original in anything is always best, that's probably the reason why I own so much Nikon glass. I dabble a bit with sigma and tamron but nothing beats my Nikons for me. This lens is perfect for those enthusiasts or beginners that really don't want to spend 1K on a 35mm 1.8. the economy isn't like it;s roaring right now so a good quality option for photographers that's less money is welcoming.
