I think 6-8 mm
Are you using a plastic hammer?
I'd recommend pig hide hammers, they are much more durable

Hammer is made of cowhide leather and can be used by Plastic
Since you hammer the steel rule from the sharp side, does the steel rule cut the hammer a lot?
