- This record has been obsoleted! If you want to see a faster run, also by me, go here: • Crash Bandicoot 2 - 10...
I said I'd upload when I got less than 90 minutes... and HELL YEAH! Single segment Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back in 89:39 :P
For several months, I've been working on a single-segment speedrun for Crash 2 to complete the game to 100% in the fastest time possible. Here is my best run to date, 89:39 with 7 accidental deaths. Yes, that's a lot of deaths, but only few of them wasted a lot of time. I do wish to improve the speedrun with less deaths overall, and think I can do it... but it did take me a while to get things this low.
Anyways, this video is commentated by both me and Chadderz to make things a little more interesting. Chadderz is also responsible for the clock and percentage tracker, which look pretty good in my humble opinion, so I thank him for adding them :P
So, more about this run...
I do not use the unbreakable box glitch, as it is too gamebreaking and would be boring as hell to watch. I do however, make use of the glitch high jump for many things, and the extra boxes glitch in two levels where I can make it activate. I also do the seemingly strange thing of unlocking two secret levels I don't need to unlock... but they actually add 1% each for unlocking them, so the game won't call 100% unless you get them (but it does let you have best end without them. But since this is classed as a 100% speedrun, I want the game to agree with me :P).
Movement is mainly slide-spin. To get the fastest slide spin, you must do as follows: Specify a direction with d-pad or analog, start a slide. Release d-pad or analog before slide ends and do a spin. Crash's spin will then be a lot faster than usual until it ends, then you make another slide and continue. This is roughly 1.8x as fast as normal running.
In terms of the route I use, it's all to do with masks. I do NOT want to go invincible for any reason as it lowers my top speed significantly. So I deliberately take a route going to levels that automatically remove masks, or go to levels where I plan to deathwarp, wherever it is needed to ensure it doesn't occur.
The timing used is according to SDA's rules: Timing starts when I gain proper control of Crash; I class that as the first frame where I can make him move anywhere, so I start the time on the one frame where Crash has movement before Cortex tries to talk to him. Ending as soon as I killed Cortex, when the game will automatically take itself to 100% from there. Beyond the time limit, I do pause to show the 100% and then take the best end. But technically the game is already complete at that point so there is no need to include it in the time.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy. It took lots of hard work and I'm quite pleased with the result. That said, you may see improvement from me yet! :P
Also... YES, more Mario Kart Wii is on the way. Worry not :P - เกม
HOLY COW! I can't express how in AW I am after watching your game play and techniques! I truthfully thought that my personal record (3hours) of completing this game 100% was impressive but after having read your calculations and watched your flawless performance...I'm just left speechless!
Every year I would practice and try to best my own record but you sir have gone beyond what I could ever achieve. Great video, I would crown you the GOD of Crash Bandicoot if I could =D
This is the first speed-run I've ever wanted to see through to the end. Very entertaining, and you clearly know your Crash 2. Cheers, guys!
Starting to play this game for the first time ever(I owned Crash 3 when I was a kid but used a 100% save because I couldn't get through the first boss), and BOY is this cryptic. When I figured out in order to get the blue gem, I shat my pants. Tried going through the level but the wall of crates near the end of the stage require like perfect jumping. Saw your video and my jaw dropped at your speed. Good work man. Wish I could get at least 1/4 of your coordination with the levels -.-
Regardless of me saying this WAY longer than I was going to - Your SR was very nice, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. :) I'm a big fan o Quake and Doom, and it's funny to think that there were speed run techniques for Crash 2 that I just now learned of. I also enjoyed that it was commentated, since it seems to add some life to it, rather than watching you fly in super speed through the game. Great job. :)
This is a great speedrun! I was trying to plan a s-s run based off of Trihex's multi-seg, but have found this slightly more up to date. This is a great run and a great teaching tool for others running the game.
Yea i kinda figured in that for the most part, when I set them up, I constantly checked the triangle button to see if it actually blew it up in the background. Way to go Brits. You guys really changed my experience.
1:00 I could never do that as a kid. I tried so many times to do that.
It confused the everliving crap out of me :p
It'll probably be a segmented run. I doubt hugely that I'll tackle it single-segment. I don't know what kind of time to expect from it yet :P
Normally I can't stand commentary, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Great run to boot.
To think you completed this whole game 100% before some of my exams would finish
great work!
Was this seriously done in just a single segment?! RESPECT!
Personally? I'm more interested in seeing you guys doing the speedrun, the commentary & banter throughout really gave this video an awesome finishing touch. You're like Cosmo & his Wind Waker Speedruns on Twitch.
This game took me and my cousin months to just get to the end... Never finished it 100% but we were only young kids then... Bringing back the memories...
It's the game's font. We extracted it from video clips of gameplay :P
Robert, your dedication to Crash Bandicoot 2 reminds me of my dedication to Paper Mario TTYD. And why sequels? I guess the originals aren't always the first played.
- Son, what are you gonna do?
- I'm completing Crash Bandicoot 2
- But we're gonna have dinner in two hours
- I betcha I can do it in less than 90 minutes!
I recently tried my own speedruns of this game using your technique (minus the little glitches and some shortcuts you do). It's so satisfying doing the slide-spin haha.
@MrWlAlex So don't watch it :P Just watch whatever interests you on my channel. While yeah, I do a lot of MKW, I do have hobbies outside of it, y'know, so I don't want to be running an exclusive MKW channel :P
I must try O and I_I buttons combo! Looks very cool! Congratulations for the speedrun!
You mean the yellow gem? Don't get any checkpoints, and move as fast as you can. If a timer doesn't appear on-screen before the first water boarding section, then you've missed automatically and need to reload the level. Otherwise, when you have the timer on-screen, race to the end of the level as fast as possible without dying, and the yellow gem will be waiting. (Masks help a lot for this). If you die, just try again from the beginning.
If you're interested in Crash 1 speedruns, a guy under the name of CaneofPacci has been doing some 100% runs recently. Search his name on Google and go to his Twitch account to see.
>watches video
>sees you slide-spinning over the edges

After so many years this game looks so good...
Nice job with this! Two questions: 1. Do you currently have the world record for this? And 2. Is the SMG2 2-player still being worked on?
No, no I didn't. You know a TNT does? It blows stuff up. Including boxes. I deliberately keep the counts on screen a lot, so count them.
Awesome speed run! Keep it up and good luck on getting an improvement :)
The link in the description is why that doesn't matter in the slightest. If you're gonna post a comment on a video, you should really learn to... well, gather information...
An analog stick, huh? I spent the majority of my childhood playing this game with a simple PS1-launch controller (i.e. before the Dual Shock), and let me tell you the D-pad controls for the Crash games are spot-on!
MY video response from the ending as asked for i am too lazy to post because the only thing it would be is clips of high-expectations-asian-father-meme complaining about the fairly minor and understandable mistakes in the video that normal human beings make. = P
Ok, GL with it, Are you going for WR or just a regular speedrun? If your going for WR, then GL with it ;D. Can't wait to see it.
I'm being lazy with the submission, that's why :P
Hey MrBean, do you think you will be able to do better or worse than this for your Crash Bandicoot 3 speedrun? Because either way, you no doubt have potential to get the wr. :)
I keep some Soundtracks (of CB2 particularly) on my HTC!! I'm very sad that there's never gonna be another Crash Game like these...
Great video guys! You play that fuckin game like mozart played his piano! Oh and I was just wondering, you're accents sound really familiar to me but I just can't put my finger on it and it's driving me crazy. What accent do you speak and are you both speaking the same accent?
Great video once again!
This is really good. I should probably get back to work now.
So has anyone made a 100% tas of this wonderful game yet? Looking forward to it!
i have learnt alot about glitch moves and game secrets, mate. cheers for the tip :)
They probably had to, in order to make the blue gem's zero box challenge work :P
First I was like "for fuck sake, not commentary...", but now I'm like "fuck yeah, this commentary is awesome!"
After watching this video, I feel as though I constantly have to rush to do everything.
Sounds like they've got some awful things planned. A Xat invasion... wow. Truly horrible stuff.
But for whatever reason, I can't bring myself to fret about it. I wonder why.
i spent ages trying to beat that secret area in un-bearable
the name totally excapes me, so maybe someone can help me out - but it was a charity stream a wee while back, it was a bunch of speed runners live streaming everyday for like 2 weeks or something, I'm sure you will know being in the speed run community yourself. buuut my question is, are you attending the next one and doing this run? would be absolutely wicked to watch with the room of runners behind you :D
Oh my god.
I love this series... Crash Bandicoot. *.*
The spin needs to be just after you've left the ground. Still, hitting the red gem is hard like this. There's an easier method of doing it; if you do a spin attack at the right time on the steel bouncy box on the right, you will be able to stand on it. After that, do a glitched high jump to the left from the top of that, and you should have enough height to grab the red gem.
I don't think so. You just need to either be at the correct position to break one with a slide, or jump off at exactly the right time if doing one with a spin landing.
I should go buy this. Like right now.
Also, I love your accent. British are best at commentating stuff.
29:05 I had to actually do that trick to get that jump because I didn't know there was any other way to get to that part of the level, and this is when I was like 9
You can actually destroy N.Gin's weapons faster if you keep hitting them after they have started malfunction.
I know, I know... I get it right in my updated speedrun :P
@Gunnaromg Zig-zag jumping is murder on the thumb and really doesn't seem to save that much time :P I only learned about wall boosting in the chase levels yesterday too, it's so fun to do and so fast when coupled with slide-spin. And as for the Road to Ruin death route skip, that's just painful :P I've known about it ages, but I can't reliably perform that jump to save my life. I'm not sure I'd even want to include the trick in a segmented run, that's how bad I find it.
Didn't know Prof Brian Cox was so good at Crash Bandicoot 2...
easily the best crash player out
If you jump on the bear next to the portal you'll get like 8 extra lives...but you have to jump on it a lot
You could spin those fucking logs!? All these years!? ALL THIS TIME!? ... All that shit those parts gave me and I could've...
I'm still practicing for the speed run Mr.Bean! But I must ask something, for no matter how many times I attempt it I just can't reach it.
That high jump trick of yours to obtain the red gem that early, I still can't seem to reach it. I'm just always a hair short. Is there a specific manner or timing of the body slam to reach it? And yes, this time I'm using PAL. Can't stand the framerate though when you're on an ntsc computer.
what a cool world record :D ... nice job I love it
and i was proud of doing a crystal only run in an hour
This run is fantastic, You earned a sub good sir, You should do a run on twinsanity if you haven't already (:
Probably Awesome Games Done Quick, and maybe one day.
I love how confident you sound during this video. It's just funny 'cause, well, ya know...it's over a really old children's game haha. I don't mean any explicit offense by that.
Thanks, guys :)
@MrBean35000vr Oh I see... My thumb is just fine with zig-zagging but I can see the pain doing it all the time in a run like this lol.
I was planning doing a 100% run about a year ago but some things got in my way so I left it be. However, watching this run got me so excited that I'm probably going to do a run of my own and try to beat this :P I'll shamelessly implement that extra box glitch to my run hyuck hyuck
when i played this at christmas 2008, it took me 2 hours to get to the fith warp room
105%, because why not.
Is that the European version and if it is, Is the jumping height different in the north american version? I feel like the jump for the red gem is impossible the way you show it. I have to slide spin jump off the crate to the left and it is still a challenge.
Did you play this on a Playstation or an emulator? Sorry if you explained this in the video, I'm just curious.
Awesomeness! Can't wait ;D GL with Dev times if you try to beat one of them. Mostly Oriental Express ;l
after watching this video, i wonna everything so quick
That should be possible with a really good run.
You beat Cortex in 19 seconds!
Hm, maybe PAL difference then? It only leaves boxes if I try to leave the area too fast.
OMG THE TIMER!
You downloaded a Crash font or something?
i would not want to be your controller after this game
Oh, ok. Another question, will you be doing 100%, or 105%?
Youre time would be faster if you skipped the dance. I think you can skip it, at least. But still OMFG this is awesome!
VERY impressive run!
Watching this made me realise that I used to be terrible at this game, whoops.
(I still love it to death though.)
@MrBean35000vr, how do you move so fast as Crash? I know its the slide spin, but its like twice as fast as what I've seen before.
Wow I think this was the bes game ever I use to play it when I was a kid mate
Me too, man. Many 1-Ups were wasted
Also, Road to Ruin...you missed boxes in the start...how'd that count? Nice gameshark...
i love it so much, one of my first games ever!!!!
Coming VERY soon ;)
You need the yellow gem from Level 11.
man you r a crash nerd for knowing all that great vid
I've watched this run 3 times and I still absolutely love it, child hood favourite :D
Mm, yes, I am aware of this. After all, you're not the first person to comment about the game audio being too loud. So what did I do? Corrected the problem in a similar later video. But there's never an excuse to tell someone to take a video down, unless it's in obvious violation of a pile of rules or designed to be deliberately offensive to the viewer. There's a difference between criticism and orders.
Nice speedrun ! Where can we found the crash timer please ?
"But i have to go, fast"
Hmm...
Who says I don't find this fun? :P
Obviously I meant love, but whatever. I also love you!
sub 1:30 is insane
Would love to see a Crash 3 speedrun. Possible? :)
...Which is another way of saying "glitch" :P
This is the best comment. Everyone can stop commenting now.
For some reason, you sound like you are from Jolly Ole England.
I used to play Crash games on a friend's house and they were fun.
@DarkerSuperSonic Well damn, I never noticed that.
them green nitros was the worst
Is this a world record 100% speedrun?
If not, what is the world record?
