Yes, Kathleen, nearly to 68 myself and how I have missed my little house in the mountains, with the good fortune to be located on the edge of a national forest. I love the trees. On my little piece of land I had 122 full size incense cedars and Sugar, Ponderosa and Jeffery pine, a dozen silver fir, 6 black oak and four manzanita, and 3 madrone, as well as dozens of seedlings and saplings. And I knew them all, personally. Friends would come and bring their dog (who was not permitted to be off leash to chase things that didn't need chasing) and the woods would go eerily quiet. When the friends and dog left, all the birds, squirrels, owls, bats, frogs, deer, coyote, raccoons, opossums, skunks, lizards, snakes, fox and weasel and even the June bugs would return magically, as if they watched and waited for the car with the dog inside to drive off down the lane. Just an idea for the harsher days of winter: Put your morning clothes under the covers next to you or at your feet for a little bit of extra warmth. Even better if you have a heated blanket, then it's almost like they're fresh out of the dryer. :)
Unsolicited well intentioned cooking advice: the reason the curry took so long to cook is because the wok has a very small bottom so it was basically bottle necking the heat through that small space to the rest of the pot. A big pot would have cooked faster in this case. I’d save the wok for frying🧡
That's comfortable living with a purpose. You never run out of things to do. Which is right up my alley. I cook and heat my bath water all by fire each and everyday😁

the fact that she watches Ghibli movies, when she actually kind of live in a Ghibli kinda mood is, I think, so satisfying to see. I don't know how to explain but the mood, the vibes, everything around the place she lives is magical.
Hannah when I used to haul wood and kindling from the woods I used a sled. You might want to get one and give it a try. For the driveway you might want to get some gravel. I absolutely adore the way you are making the cabin look. It’s lovely.
I feel like we are so similar, to drinking coffee all day, only eating once a day, and the music choices!! Thrifting is my jam. shoot wish we could hang out lol
I would do a gravel driveway. Ive got one at my house and it lasts a long time if you do it right. You will need a base of smaller gravel (sometimes called "crusher run") and then do a second layer of larger gravel. This will help it settle in well and last a lot longer before getting worked down into the dirt.
i’m not going to lie, discovering your channel and watching the process of you making your own space out in nature has really given me a better idea of what i want and what i want to do in life (coming from someone who had NO clue) . thank you for sharing this with all of us, and until i can start my own journey i’ll be living vicariously through yours ✨❤️
Just an added thought to your woodstove use especially as the weather gets colder. Add some firebrick to bottom of your woodstove a layer or two thick they will hold more heat and give you longer warmth froom your fire. Also you will want to add more wood as it is the coals and red embers that build up in the bottom that give you all that nice warm heat for hours and hours. Just an FYI from someone that has used woodstoves for years on how to get better results and longer heat from your stove. Great videos keep them up!
For the driveway I think gravel might be the most cost-effective option. I'm really impressed with your business sense. Between reselling clothing, affiliate sales, TH-cam, and who knows what else it seems like you're killing it. I hope I'm successful enough in business to be able to live this kinda off-grid lifestyle one day. It's nice to have your income so diversified so even if one thing drops off, you have several others still going.

I had a buddy that lived in a cabin that was drafty.. So, we tried a bunch of things to keep him warm overnight. The thing we found that worked best was he would buy a big bag of wood pellet balls and he would scoop a coffee can of those under the logs and it would give him nice coal all night! They are inexpensive.. Stay warm girlie!

Gonna be honest here - I’m so much of a city person that I just would be scared and didn’t know what to do living in the woods all by myself. But at the same time I crave some peaceful alone nature time atm so I’m living that out through your channel ☺️ loved all cabin videos so far and your character is just so fun and refreshing. Have a nice time out there! Greetings from Berlin, Germany ☺️
That's funny becoz I think that cities are way less safe than woods (considering the density of population around). I think it's a capitalist view that brings us think/wants to have Fear about woods and nature or believe we are in danger, and trying to stay Away from what make us feel good. :-)
Honestly I think woods vs the city is such a preference thing. For instance I have grown up all my life in the woods or near the woods and wouldn't feel at all comfortable or safe in the city with all those people. But a lot of people are scared of the wood and wild animals and feel the city is way safer.
I grew up just outside of NYC and then I moved to the woods and lived there for 2 decades, now I live totally in between in a little town. I gotta say, my favourite by far was living out in the woods. It's so peaceful esp when you don't have neighbors. My partner and I are planning on getting back out into the woods for retirement, not staying in a noisy town!
Trust me, I lived in major cities my entire life, San Francisco, Berkeley, Shanghai, LA... But once I started to go into the wild more, thru-hiking mainly, I got addicted. Now, I live somewhere close to the city because of work. But my goal is to slowly switch to working remotely so I can have my cozy cabin in the middle of nowhere and be alone.
As a fresh (3 years) dog owner, I always say everyone should have a dog. Pocket-size or big enough to ride doesn't matter, they are all great companions. And they can all alert you of danger, be it security, health issues, or both!
@@charismaticcreature7875 I find dogs to be very portable.:D Ironically, it's my experience that larger dogs fare better. I have an enormous American White Shepherd, essentially she's a white wolf, and she goes everywhere with me.
Just a suggestion for heat! They have the oil filled heaters for under $80 that would keep your upstairs nice and warm once your stove goes out at night. They have timers, so you can set it for however long you wish to sleep and it will turn off in the morning. They're incredibly energy efficient, I use one to keep my back porch a 4 season porch in the minus 40°C winters here! Its no noise, unlike that space heater you've got theyre completely silent! When my power goes out it even heats 700sqft of my house. I think it would save you some wood and on extra cold days would be nice!
@@jewelofwisdom8279 yes I mean electric! I don't think they can run any other way unless you already have pipes and such. I love them, mines on wheels so I can easily roll it to whichever room I want extra toasty but it mostly stays in the porch all winter keeping it 4 season. I should have mentioned when my power goes out I have a little generator I plug it into lol. Thats how I know its energy efficient!
Ok, I thought that was the type of heater you were referring to and yes, they work great! I guess what through me off was your use of it on your porch and it being electric but I’m assuming you have an enclosed porch, like a sun room. Anyway, that explains it and thanks for your reply.
@@armslength2618 you must have had a older rig. The new ones are quiet, silent infact. There is no noise when mine heats up at all and no clicking noise at all! And it only costs me under a dollar a day to have on 24/7! It also has heated my entire 700sqft living area when my furnace quit. Its not very big either, the size of a pizza box. Old ones are very inefficient though. I also wasn't saying she should quit using the stove because I completely agree with you, they pack the most punch! But alas you cannot keep a stove going all night. That's why I suggested she have one on a timer to run while she sleeps until after waking up when the stove gets going again :). 😊
Maybe you should get a composting toilet inside the cabin so you don't have to go outside when it's super cold. I also suggest gravel for the driveway. Love your videos!!
You will get better at "stoking" the coals in the fire so they are still hot t. Next morning, usually before bed bury the coal in ash and the next cold morning the fire will start right away with dry wood 😊👍
@@dave29123 When I was small and lived on a farm with wood heat, we called it "smooring" the fire. Perhaps it is a regional expression--same as banking the fire. Anybody else ever hear it called that? Or know where the word originates?
Watching your videos help me be more motivated to live with less. I know that isn't the point of your channel, but the need to buy more is something I've struggled with. Your independent spirit is so inspiring to someone who has never been very independent much less lived alone.
Or one of those incinerator toilets. (I once dreamed of living in the Alaskan woods until it snowed 3 inches where I lived and stuck for a week.... my dream quickly died 😂 ) but I’ll never forget learning about those incinerator toilets 🚽
ha ha, I just commented along similar lines. I said how about a camping toilet, but composting is a good idea too. And they are easy enough to make one yourself, esp if you know how to work with wood. I'm sure Hannah could tackle that job very easily. Then she'd have two bathrooms! lol

She just plays the different music in spurts which is probably not considered copyright by not playing one whole song. Hanna seems to be smart if not very.
I didn't read through all the comments so I'm sorry if it's been mentioned, but I'm concerned for your safety. Please do not plug that space heater in to a power strip. Space heaters should always be plugged in directly to the wall socket. Never an extension cord or power strip. I don't want you to have a fire🔥. Love your videos, thank you for all the hard work. I know how much time it takes to put together even a short video. The place is looking great!
You should get a dog to keep you company in the woods, they are great ❤️ love love love your cabin! Much love and jealousy (lack of cabins) from England! 💜
I think she mentioned, she will be leaving in winter an comeback around spring or summer, and dog living in a van isn't good for them. Maybe stop telling her to get a dog repeatedly when she already had another plans in the future, i'm sure she know what she's doing rn.
Girl I’ve been wanting to buy acres of foresty land with a tiny house and of course TH-cam would bring me straight to you! I’m in love with your place omg I cannot wait to have mine!!
We have a house in the mountains and the cheapest way to fix muddy roads is gravel. Pea Gravel is what we use. It eventually sinks into the ground, but it is easy to put another layer on. Asphalt is expensive.
Homemade Fire Starter: on a piece of paper plate put a small few of cottonballs that have a dab of vasaline on each. Wrap that in a paper towl and place under all wood and kindlng. Light the firestarter. That shit will burn really good.
Having my morning coffee watching this, just like having a friend over! Love all your plants! I have about 40 in my flat and I think I'm going to have to start hanging some as I've ran out of floor space, you've given me ideas 😅
I'm a sixty-year-old mom TH-cam watcher. I have a acre long driveway side Drive access. What you can cheaply do is fine pine needles in your area take them and fill in the drive. Pine needles work great. If you knew anybody who had some free or cheap Stone you could do that too. My friend Michael who is crippled. His parents came from Massachusetts. They laid logs down. And covered the logs. It worked great. That is a lot of work though. Those are all things that hopefully would be free to you and would be within your Forest.

Yes! When I live in a really cold house, I'll tuck my dressing gown and socks under the blanket with me so it gets warm overnight. That way, I don't have to start the day in cold clothes! Great idea!
For the drive I would get limestone delivered. My parents home is in the woods and that’s what they did, bonus is it firms up with water. We use to grate our drive with our lawnmower by dragging a piece of wire fencing plied with heavy stuff 🤣
If you run out of birch bark as a fire starter dryer lint also works well. We stuff some inside old toilet paper roll tubes to start fires with. Also for the driveway, crushed up pine cones are a more cost-effective way to cover a driveway (but certainly more work intensive). Purchasing gravel or wood chips is also an option, but depending on how long your driveway is, it could cost a bit.
I love watching people realize their dream of loving in the woods ( be it full time or part time). I bought a large piece of land myself a few years ago but admittedly havent had enough time to develop it yet. I dont even have a cabin on it yet. But I'm still relatively young and am fully committed to putting up something simple in the future. I only recently discovered your channel and already love it. girl that was stressin me out when you were about to serve up the curry and the back burner was still going lol I'm glad your wine brain remembered to turn it off bc I know my wine brain wouldn't have lmaooo
Hannah about your drive way I recommend getting gravel if you can find a place to deliver it. We got some at our house and we get the dark grey like sharp edges gravel that stuff compacts down more than round gravel. I hope that was helpful!! 💞
I want to add, you can also get rubble, basically broken up bricks, concrete, tiles, anything smashed to 1-4" size pieces. one of my parents neighbours used that as a base for a driveway (and put regular gravel on top to make it look normal). apparently it was even cheaper than Granular A.
Creek gravel is free, and can be used to fill in mud holes, if you know anyone who owns property next to a creek...and a way to load or haul it. I love your videos! So awesome!
When spring comes just he a truck load of gravel for driveway . The birch wood when snow falls heavily is going to be hard learn to chop kindling wood its great gym work out for arms
Space heater is not cheating. We used those and electric blankets all the time when I was a kind. Not having indoor central heat isn't ideal in the winter, but electric space heaters are and easy good way to warm things up quick and then let the wood stove take over as your primary heat source.
Driveway fix, every 10 yrs or so I add a triaxle load of 3/4" gravel to the driveway. A good driver will disperse the load evenly as its dumped out, eliminating the need for extra equipment and cost. Make sure you have a plan for snow (snow blower or plow). In my area, once it freezes any accumulation will continue to build up until springtime, making it impossible to drive through, even with 4x4. It gets -20f over by me, not sure of the temperatures by you. Rock-On :) Jim M., NE Pennsylvania mountains.

Just an idea for the harsher days of winter: Put your morning clothes under the covers next to you or at your feet for a little bit of extra warmth. Even better if you have a heated blanket, then it's almost like they're fresh out of the dryer. :)

Buy an electric blanket for the bed.
love my electric blanket and totally trying socks for the morning since it's supposed to snow tonight
This 68 year old gets a big kick out of your adventures. Love the cabin and your decor. Good job, girl.

Hannah when I used to haul wood and kindling from the woods I used a sled. You might want to get one and give it a try. For the driveway you might want to get some gravel. I absolutely adore the way you are making the cabin look. It’s lovely.

Hi
Hi
I would do a gravel driveway. Ive got one at my house and it lasts a long time if you do it right. You will need a base of smaller gravel (sometimes called "crusher run") and then do a second layer of larger gravel. This will help it settle in well and last a lot longer before getting worked down into the dirt.

It sounds like Hannah is taking off for warmer weather soon.
For the driveway I think gravel might be the most cost-effective option.

The cabin and the outhouse just reminded me of the beginning of Shrek. Only if shrek was this beautiful blonde woman with an aesthetically pleasing cabin lol. I guess you’re writing your own fairytale.

Greetings from Berlin, Germany ☺️
bin auch aus berlin und wüsste auch nicht wo es sowas hier in der nähe eben könnte zu einem okayen preis
Any plans to get a pet? I feel like I'd want some companionship out there.
As a fresh (3 years) dog owner, I always say everyone should have a dog. Pocket-size or big enough to ride doesn't matter, they are all great companions. And they can all alert you of danger, be it security, health issues, or both!
Yes, get a dog to.protect you....

@Lucky Lex has Are you referring to an oil filled heater powered by electricity? If not, will you provide a link? Thnx!
Even have an old fashion pee pot would be a good thing at night!
@@skylarkenwood1422 Was going to suggest the same thing!
You will get better at "stoking" the coals in the fire so they are still hot t. Next morning, usually before bed bury the coal in ash and the next cold morning the fire will start right away with dry wood 😊👍
True that. When we go camping our campfire still has burning hot red coals and really easy to start that morning fire for coffee.
I think you mean 'banking' instead of 'stoking', but I agree with your suggestion.
@@dave29123 When I was small and lived on a farm with wood heat, we called it "smooring" the fire. Perhaps it is a regional expression--same as banking the fire. Anybody else ever hear it called that? Or know where the word originates?

Tasty Pops good idea!
I was thinking that I'd need a potty chair at least, for trips in the middle of the night. It's called being old, *sigh*.
Then she'd have two bathrooms! lol

That’s what I thought.
She just plays the different music in spurts which is probably not considered copyright by not playing one whole song. Hanna seems to be smart if not very.
I'm no expert but I believe anything more than 10 seconds of a song can usually be dinged for copyright so the short bursts are probably calculated
Pea gravel is easier on your toes when walking on it
Homemade Fire Starter: on a piece of paper plate put a small few of cottonballs that have a dab of vasaline on each. Wrap that in a paper towl and place under all wood and kindlng. Light the firestarter. That shit will burn really good.

For the drive I would get limestone delivered. My parents home is in the woods and that’s what they did, bonus is it firms up with water.

I have never been so proud of, and happy for, someone I do not know! It is amazing following you on your journey!
Your brilliant just the way you are, random and and honest I can so relate to you. Perfectly imperfect 😃

Hannah about your drive way I recommend getting gravel if you can find a place to deliver it. We got some at our house and we get the dark grey like sharp edges gravel that stuff compacts down more than round gravel. I hope that was helpful!! 💞
Hi ,Mike here from the UK we use crush and run which sounds like what Shelby describes if its the same, good look with the drive.
it's called 'Granular A' or 'crusher run' in Canada, might have a similar name in the USA. Its usually the cheapest too! Yay!
I want to add, you can also get rubble, basically broken up bricks, concrete, tiles, anything smashed to 1-4" size pieces. one of my parents neighbours used that as a base for a driveway (and put regular gravel on top to make it look normal). apparently it was even cheaper than Granular A.
that sharp grey stuff cuts into tyres and slashes the feet of wildlife. ive seen the vet bills for my friends dog.
