Should Persona 6 Be a Dark Game?

  • If rumours are to be believed, Persona 6 will release at some stage next year. The first three Persona games are also some of the darkest in gaming. Persona 4 and 5 took on far lighter tones. For this video essay we'll explore what the vocal minority want Persona 6 to be, how all of the Persona games have a dark edge to them and if Persona 6 should be a dark game or not.

Which is a totally valid view point! I pointed out in the video how P4 and 5 are the most popular in franchise history and they're ones where the games are generally speaking lighter hearted but touch on darker subjects. I think that's Persona at its best

  • @shiraoune

The neo persona games definitely has a dark plot, but the delivery made it suave. It can't be compared to p2 (which imo is the darkest game in the series) and It's okay to acknowledge that, the developers wanted to add humor and light elements to the plot (maybe even a bit too much) in order to appeal to the new fanbase and prevent the game from being constantly dark, which might not resonate with the targeted audience.
This has happened with p3r. If you played the og first you’d notice that they made the remake much lighter in terms of atmosphere & vibes. P3 concept is probably the darkest in the series but the execution of the story falls short, so its between old persona and neo persona in terms of the dark concept.
As for P4, I cant even call it a murder mystery. The game is filled with humor and fun, and the atmosphere is peaceful about 80% of the time. Many people actually prefer its party members (among the entire series) because of how much the game focused on their relationship together rather than the main story’s concept.
Personally, I feel that p5 had the potential to be one of the darkest games in the series, but it ended up being too suave. The developers decided to have most of the 'dark stuff' happen off screen due to the age rating. It's not the game the fans were expecting when they first saw that chair trailer.
P1 story wasn't as dark as P5 (at least imo) but the atmosphere and the delivery of the story in p1 made the game feel much darker than it actually was.
This is all my opinion that i wanted to share. I'm sure I would enjoy p6 either way, I'm just hoping they deliver the story right instead of ruining it in the middle with bad execution. Like if they’re gonna call it for example a murder mystery, MAKE IT A REAL MURDER MYSTERY.

I think P6 should be as dark as it needs to be. Part of what makes Persona so engaging is the jovial moments you get with your friends, contrasted against the dark moments that test your bonds. It's been a staple since P1.

It would be interesting to see Persona 6 tackle themes of revenge and forgiveness, and how leading a vindictive path can and will ultimately lead to the very destruction of your soul. Maybe the protagonist is a young adult foreigner who comes to Japan looking for someone who screwed him over in a very terrible way and seeks to take revenge on them. At first, the game has you committing morally questionable acts in order to find the villain by any means necessary. However, along the way, the protagonist eventually realizes that a path of hatred and vengeance isn't one that should be walked, and forgiveness is a more powerful (but albeit more difficult) path. I feel like that could be done in a way that isn't too edgy, while still exploring some darker themes.

Persona 6 should be about a bunch of internet personalities (Streamers, vtubers, clout chasers, video essayists, digital artists, etc...) that tackles concepts of identity and what it means to put on a 'mask' when performing for an audience. Each of the main characters would struggle with their own hardships (losing popularity, being unable to grow their views, being cancelled, selling out for sponsors, struggling to pay bills, getting hate dogpiled, etc...). Their Persona awakens when they decide to stop performing for for the sake of their view counts and sponsors and instead decide to refocus on their love of their craft that got them started in the first place.
The main character's persona would be Pewdiepie.
Nah, just kidding. Make the personas be famous performers, artists, and writers. Each main character could have their persona be based on a different media. Like shakespeare for plays.

@@HydratedChampion I don't know if you love the games. This comment feels more like a fundamentalist evangelical Christian saying they "love" their gay child even though they think they're going to hell. Come on, let's look back at both Persona 2s they're goofy as hell, at the level of Persona 4 even considering all of the Eikichi and Lisa scenes in P2IS and Baofu and Katsuya scenes in P2EP. There is ALWAYs comedic relief in these games (Brown and Masao for example in P1),
it's not my fault if you wanted to ignore the fact that a group of teenagers and a few adults including a Nazi themed rock band member fought a group of astrology themed cosplayers that are inspired by a fictional super sentai super hero group that are the start of a sequence of events containing noodle arm aliens controlled by (not)Hitler who is secretly a tentacle alien god that turns memes into reality scammed a million people in a fictional city in Japan with a wacky book before turning it into a massive UFO and creating the New World Order that is secretly behind a mirror version of the wacky events that occurred in the game prior that only became just margianally less absurd leading to a scenario where no one that died in the previous game is dead in the main timeline.
That's dark as hell man I know I'm so scared and darkened just from recounting that plotline (this is how P2 elitists break down modern Persona games so I decided I could do it to but with this sacred game, I love it but we can NOT treat it as some ultimately superior work just because less people talk about it and makes you feel special). Now let me do the same but in reverse for Persona 5.
      You are Slave, Want Emancipation?
Persona 5 is a video game about a prison reality where people are born just die under the foot of those who are more fortunate, the ruler of this reality proves this point by creating the perfect incarnations of the seven deadly sins and placing them in the most conveniant situations as to maximize suffering the most.
The main victims of this ontologically built system of oppression are kids that cannot yet determine their own fates, they and those around them are also made victim to the most heinous of crimes you could imagine through this exploitation of the apathy that is created through the sheer banality of these evil individuals. No one cares unless they themselves or someone they love are the victim, but by that point it's already too late.
A secret group of individuals studying the functionality of reality in an experimental field of scientific study called Cognitive Pscience (a parallel to the real life field of Parapsychology) come across a breakthrough. The son of the most power hungry and egoistic of these agents has the ability to access this previously hypothetical space known as the cognitive world, previously considered a merely subjective world, has objective affects on reality, almost too objective.
With this he can become the most prized individual in the organization, the reason as to why this is is due to one simple fact. His colleague Wakaba Ishiki has made a breakthrough, she figured out how to bring this Cognitive Pscience field to the public and how to make it accessible to the average person. Humanity would be forever changed if this breakthrough was allowed to go public, but the other day that egoistic agent got a phone call asking for that Wakaba Ishiki to be his son's first target, as an experiment.
It turns out this phone call was from a mysterious individual tied to what he knew only publicly as the SIU, in actuality it's really an Antisocial Personality Group (criminal organization) that legaly defends and insures that certain powerful and corrupt members of society can continue with their ill-gained successes uninterrupted and unbothered.
This is what led the young Goro Akechi which he did not raise personally down his inevitable path of corruption. He does not represent any sin in particular yet he represents the ultimate form of suffering, separation/isolotion. Having been neglected at a young age by his dead beat dad his will of rebellion had been to take out his anger onto those in which those above him order him to kill, it's irrational but it keeps him at bay.
Years later the agent now flaunts his money he gained from this secret success and uses it to party. One night while really drunk after almost having sexually assaulted who had to have been his sixtieth person in this lifetime one curious country boy decided to but in and ruin the fun. "Damn brat I'll sue!". That boy was arrested and put on probation just because he couldn't mind his own business. If only there were something he could do to make all of this fair.
Oh wait, the human soul has access to unlimited potential and can do many wondrous things (just as seen with the IS cast creating an entirely new timeline, Randolph Carter single handedly imprisoning Nyarlathotep a long time ago, Makoto Yuki along with SEES defying the request of Erebus to Nyx down onto humanity's Collective Unconscious, Yu Narukami overwriting humanity's will to hide behind comfortable lies that allow murders and sexual assaults to take place uncorrected, etc.) singehandedly harnessing a specific emotion or thought pattern allows a group of individuals to work together and become bonded through even the toughest of struggles.
The Will of Rebellion in this specific case being the perfect channel to correct the egregious wrongs of this world. The hope of humanity was created to facilitate the fostering of this pure Will of Rebellion so that humanity could subconsciously come together to overthrow their overlord in their own unique ways. This will of Rebellion would then create a world that is not really a prison but moreso a school where humanity can learn from their mistakes on their own and progressively get better without having to be controlled.
But after all that, at the end of the day Persona 5 is just Lupin III x Death Note x JoJo's Bizarre Adventure x Jungian Psychology made into a 120+ hour video game
