    Guys I love this video. I have never seen anything like it and I will refer any keyboard player to this for playing background we call it lol. Thank you for being as thorough as you guys were, and talked about the chords themselves and how to use them as well. Question tho. What would you guys suggest on how to transition from song to song that are in different keys? I play the piano myself and I have used the circle of 5ths/4ths and also have simply just found a "common chord" between the two keys. I think that would be an awesome and informational video to make if possible!

    • @brianmichaelfuller

      Transitioning keys can be tricky sometime but the circle of 5ths is a great place to start!!! We will put this idea in the hopper for future videos!!!

    Question Fuller, I know it depends on context and person, but I’m curious how much your playing is “measured” relative to 4/4 vs how much your just floating in time. A ratio perhaps? Or you start floating and get more measured if the rest of the band is coming in later on?

    • @brianmichaelfuller
      @brianmichaelfuller 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Danny! I think in this case, it's important to follow the natural tempo or "feel" of the person speaking. If you listen to the Psalm 23 reading, you'll hear me following the flow of Brian as he reads the text. I tell our keys players to think in terms of "whole" notes at a very slow and rubato tempo. If you are playing with a band, or drums, then of course, all bets are off!!! follow the beat:)

    • @DIDCHOI
      @DIDCHOI 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool~ confirmed my thoughts! Love that you guys are bringing keyboard content in!

  • @loveisrealdudes
    @loveisrealdudes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    People are watching you...so you better look happy and you better be smiling like a person is supposed to look when you love Jesus. Am I getting that about right? 😉
    Also, don’t play wrong notes, you could ruin the moment and God’s Spirit is counting on that pad to do some serious softening and convicting...definitely don’t want any wrong-note spirit-quenching-business going down
    Music is powerful!...wait...well the Bible is powerful too!
    Seriously, though. I think modern “worship” teams are taking this whole inspiring, moment, mood thing way too far. I know everyone has differing opinions on this, but here’s mine: when we are taking about “creating emotion” and worrying about the travesty of someone waiting “4 mins” to start playing mood inducing pad work, I think we are worshiping our own emotional experience more than the God of the songs.
    Throw hate (or disagreement) if you must, but I hope it’s just food for thought. I generally really like what you all do here on WT, but just can’t behind some of this

    Excellent video. I think everyone involved with a worship team (particularly keyboardists) should see this.
    Also, I particularly appreciate the point about the V chord. I definitely encourage everyone to be very careful and conscious about its use, because the tension of the V can create more harmonic motion than is desired or appropriate for the given context. Thank you for addressing this. (In some situations, a V7sus4 might be appropriate, delivering more tension than Vsus4 but less than V. I don't think this would be a common solution, but may be perfect in some specific situations)

    Great Vid. One correction though at around 8:35 You were talking about cycling through a C-Csus-C-C9 or C2. I think You meant to say C major, C Sus4, C Major and then C Sus2.
    A C9 chord would have seventh in it as well as a 9th/2nd degree added to the original Triad to be called C9. And a C add 9 Chord would have a 9th degree over the original triad without a seventh. But non of those are being played in that part of the video.
    You were playing a Sus 2 chord which is simply a Major chord with the major 3rd flattened down to the 2nd or 9th interval and hence suspends the chords preventing it from being a propet Major chord. In the same way the Sus4 chord sharpens the major third up to a 4th degree. Both of these chords Sus4 and Sus2 are distinct from the previous two (add 9/add2 & C9) in that they avoid the major/minor third all together to make it a non Major/Minor chord, while the add9/add2 and C9 all have their thirds retained.
    Hope that makes some sense.

    As a church guitar player who has basic keys playing knowledge, THANK YOU - please do more videos, as you’re able, about how to play keys in church at the basic level.
    Fuller, I like the simplicity of your explanations - guys like me need that sort of stuff.
    Just one suggestion - would it be possible to set up one of those overhead camera arrangements so viewers can see better the keyboard fingering ? I’m aware also that video producers can use software which highlights which keys are being depressed - you’re probably already aware of this...
    But no matter what, please continue to consider doing more keys-based stuff - the more arrows we have in our quiver, the better we are potentially able to serve if & when the need arises

    I agree with all of this, except a major 7th can SOMETIMES work really well if it's played very SUBTLY!!! and NO 3rds of the chord for me personally, I like to keep it hollow and spacious! 9th chords are the BEST!

    • @brianmichaelfuller
      @brianmichaelfuller 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree DW. The Major 7th is actually diatonic for the Tonic chord so have at it! I also used the F(four chord) with a raised 4th (Lydian) in the 23rd psalm. In the key of C it's a F chord but replacing the A with a B Natural... creates some nice tension.

  • @joeeggers
    @joeeggers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video and helpful especially to less experienced players.
    Not to nitpick, but terminology counts, so...a ninth chord and a two chord are not the same. You are playing C2 when you add the 2 "D" to the C triad. A 9th chord is different because it implies the seventh is also played, which of course is whole different sound.
    So
    C2 or C add 2 = C E G D (play the 2 along with the third "E")
    C sus 2 = C D G (play the 2 instead of the third - "E")
    C9 = C E G Bb D (the 9 by itself always means dominant, so C7 plus the 9)
    Cmaj9 = C E G B D (Cmaj7plus the 9)
    Great channel, wonderful resources, keep it up

    • @brianmichaelfuller
      @brianmichaelfuller 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Joe! I was simply referring to the 9th tone as the 2nd diatonic pitch above the octave root C, which in this case is adding the 9th tone to the melodic phrase. More of a philosophy than an actual chord tone. You are correct, I’m not actually playing a “ninth chord”... I’m adding the 9th to the melodic passage. Saying 9th, is implying the octave above the root and NOT the low D otherwise that would sound a little muddy.

    • @joeeggers
      @joeeggers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianmichaelfuller Yea, great stuff. I wouldn't have bothered except when I teach basic theory at worship workshops this is a question I get all the time - "what's the difference between C9 and C2". It confuses people, so I thought I'd tag onto your nice teaching opportunity. And of course none of these chord names dictate voicings, just which notes are in the chord. Again, I really appreciate the resources you guys are putting out there.

    How do you transition from one pad to the next pad in the span of a set of songs?

      Our Mainstage Pads Player allows you to simply press the note of the key you want and it seamlessly cross fades to the next set of pads in that key! Check it out!!

      @@brianmichaelfuller Thanks for the response. If I have already bought a library of Worship Tutorial Pads, can I add that to whatever player I buy?

      Charlie Wulke The Mainstage Pads Player uses a different Pads file to reduce file size and increase playability. So you would need to purchase it separately. However, I do believe their is an upgrade discount path.

    This was a bit cringy and amusing at times. Mostly because I was underwhelmed by the rudimentary approaches. However this is underscoring and in the context of contemporary worship this is simple and effective. Outside of this I would argue that there are other methods to creating transitions depending on the type of church you attend (traditional, gospel, etc.).

    If there are no keys but there is an electric guitar player, can this be done with swells ect, on electric and if yes could you do a how to video?

      Yeah you can use similar concepts. We're planning to cover this on guitar soon!

      Worship Tutorials that’s great thanks. I was asked by the worship leader to do this on electric a while back and had to say no for lack of knowhow.

      Same exact concept bud!
      The chords used can actually directly transition to a guitar playing swells or soft, ambient picking behind a speaker (or a mix of both).
      Although it’s ideal to use higher shaped triads with fewer notes to create space, you can totally get away with swelling on your standard “cowboy” chords.

      MOKEY12345 Knowing a few different inversions or positions for each chord on the neck can give you a lot of dynamic possibilities as well.

      Josh Petermann I was thinking more in terms of sounds etc. I run a Line6 Helix. These guys are running the Helix also and it would be nice to see their approach to translating this to the Helix.

    Good basics man! I somewhat disagree on the "only play diatonic chords", there are plenty of notes and chords that are not diatonic and sound legit. Great points bro!

      Yes you can play non-diatonic chords, but it draws the ear to the music and away from the dialogue... Use them SPARINGLY. The goal is to blend into the background and be very subtle. Rock on!

      Yeah bro, sparingly is key. see what i did there ;) --i dont think it takes away from it though, in the same way he said to go to the 4 to give you some breathing room, it all is about making the persons words music. Just my two cents! :)

      Band Direct I think that perhaps when it is said that it takes away, it is simply stating that because of the awesome uniqueness, it draws the attention to the music rather than to the dialogue the music is supporting.
      If it draws attention to the keys, it does take away from the words of the speaker. The idea of this style of playing is literally to be an enhancer, not the main ingredient. There are many many times in the worship set for us to do that, BUT when we are backing a speaker, that generally isn’t the time for non-diatonic chords.
