- In this video I forge one of my favorite projects, A basket twist Christmas ornament from 4 10" pieces of 1/4" cold rolled square stock and a marble. This is a good project for folks just starting the journey in forge welding. I hope you find it useful.
Full ten points for ingenuity! You sir deserve more surface time for your videos!
Thank you!
I finally made an actual attempt of making one of these and I learned a lot while doing it. Thank you Sir!
I would like to see a picture of how it turned out. My email is johnbennett1959@gmail.com if you wouldn't mind sending me a picture.
Thanks so much for your videos. I had about given up on forge welding but after hearing your detailed explanations in this video, I think I will try again.
Hope it goes well for you!
I like the way you made the basket aw forge welded and drew out the ends. That is a very nice video. Thank you.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
That was very nicely done, I like the way you explain each step. Thanks!
Thank you, I try to break it down the best I can.
I really like your videos, as an amateur blacksmith with no teacher but the internet, I find your videos very helpful. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the kind words, I'm not very good at the video stuff but I'm learning. Glad you find them useful. I stumble through tech issues and i struggle to get the words out sometimes....but I hope it's all good in the end.
I loved the video, I love your method of straightforward instruction, and I subscribed just to see more. I'm a woodworker, but I want to expand into blacksmithing to add black-work to my wood projects. Thank you.
Thanks, I have done a few pieces with metal & wood, throw in some copper and they really pop.
Really really cool ! Your explanations are very clear and cover everything ! it's hard to find information on how to manage your fire while forge welding, and also the techniques you have used here and explained very well, thankyou for that ! Have a great day :)
Thank you, I am glad you liked it and found it useful. I am working on upgrading cameras and lighting to make the videos clearer.
Beautiful ornament, excellent video. My teeth died when you used the wire brush! LOL !!! Respect from Argentina !!!
Glad you like the video! Thank you for the feedback.
I seem to be learning and able to steal some of your skill. Thank you kind sir!
Glad to hear it. Hope you continue to learn and grow in the craft!
That is awesome, makes me want to take a blacksmith class now!
Thank you, You won't regret the class if you take it!
Very Talented! You make it look easy!
I've made a lot of scrap metal over the years;c)
Thanks so much for doing this video. I have been racking my brain for some christmas gift ideas that i can make for people this year and this is the perfect project.
Glad you can use it, I have several more Christmas ideas om my channel. Check them out if you haven't seen them yet.
wow, the craftsmanship in this is insane! bravo to you sir, I hope I can be as good a blacksmith one day!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
My first basket twist I chiseled I fought hard getting the edges filled off beat back down this is definitely the way lol
Nicely done John! And I have a bucket full of those big marbles- now I finally have a use for them:) Cheers from Down Under:) Jay.
Thank you, glad you liked it.
Nice job! Great project, I’m going to try it tomorrow.
Glad you find it useful and like it.
I'm really enjoying the videos of the more simple projects. I haven't been able to try some of your more complex projects because of my lack of some of the more specialty tools, but think these ornaments are very cool and look forward to hammering out a few of them.
Glad you enjoy the videos, I try to keep them simple. Good luck and give them a go.
Great !greetings from Bavarian Blacksmith.
Thanks for watching
Fantastic craftsmanship! Learned a lot, thank you!
Your welcome! I am glad you got some good out of it!
Nice piece John, those will make nice gifts. I have to say it made me squirm watching you squeezing by the horn of your anvil!😬
Occupational hazards;c)
Thank you, I like it a lot to watch this video.
A happy new year to you all
Groet (regards) Bouk
Thanks, glad you liked it, Happy new year to you as well!
That was a great video, I really enjoyed how you showed each step of the process in detail. I'm still working on my forge welding, but I want to try this for a decorative gift. nicely done
Glad you liked it. Forge welding is one of those things that the takes patience and practice. A clean fire and a soft touch go a long way. Good luck
That's really lovely mate. I'm going to try and make one of those. Thank you for a great video.
Your welcome. glad you liked it!
Just discovered your TH-cam channel and subscribed to you. You are very skilled. I also respect how you respond to every single comment on your videos. It's very good to build a community on your channel, and it's very polite. Wish more people did that. Merry Christmas!
Thank you, I figure if a person takes the time to comment or ask a question I should do my best to answer back. Merry Christmas!
Very nice John, I think I'd like to make some as gifts myself. Thank you and happy holidays.
Glad you liked it, let me know how they turn out!
Made one like this today. Turned out pretty good.
Glad to hear it turned out good. If you don't mind send me a picture at johnbennett1959@gmail.com. I'd like to see it!
Ok Done.
Very nice!
Thank you!
I am just getting started learning to blacksmith, so this is very informative, and a very attractive piece. I just wish you had a microphone clipped to you instead of relying on the camera. It would balance out the sound better and make it easier to understand what you say.
I have tried several microphones and not had much luck. I'm a better smith than I am a videographer. I will look into it again and see what I can come up with.
Have you ever coated the contract surface between the bars to reduce the chance for them to stick together? I have seen other smiths use whiteout when doing canister welds and I would like your opinion if you thought that would be helpful? Especially if using smaller bars.
I never tried anything like that, worth looking into though!
Really nice video John. Merry Christmas!
Thanks, glad you like it. You have a Merry Christmas as well!
very nicely done, I really enjoyed that !
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thank you for the feedback as well!
I really enjoyed watching this video, I learned a lot on how to forge weld, also i really liked that idea with the piece to hold the tongs closed i never thought of that. thank you. I just wish i could hear you better when you changed the camera. Happy Holidays!
I have purchased microphones to try to solve some of the sound issues. Glad you liked the video!
Looks really good and I liked how you took time to explain the steps you were taking. I have 2 questions about your flue. I don't see a tube outside, does the outside of your building get all covered in soot? Also what about heat? I'd like to try something similar in my garage but my windows are vinyl.
The flue goes straight up about 2 feet off the outside wall. it is 4 feet above the roof line. I have no issues with heat. Thanks for the questions and input.
Thats beautiful ! i´ll definitely make those for my family next year :) this year iam working on some candle holders
Thanks,
nice job on this!
Thank you!
great video
Thank you!
Really enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing. What did you use to hold the tongs closed? I couldn't quite make out what you said.
I just make tong clips/rings from 1/4" round stock to hold the tongs closed. They are a c shape that slips on and off. I have them in several sizes. Glad you like the videos.
Great job! 👍👍
Thank you, It was a fun video to shoot

Sir, Great and informative video. What would you think of a ornamental knife with the basket twist in the handle?
Probably make a nice piece, especially with the right pattern in the blade!
Very true a spiral Damascus etch. Just the sound of it makes me picture a great gift to someone.
nice vid . thanks ... what is the weight and make of your anvil? ty
It is a JHM shaper 160 pound anvil. Glad you liked the video!
Just made four shelf brackets using your idea, would love to send you a pic see what you think.
johnbennett1959@gmail.com I'd really like to see them!
Nice video, very interesting! Maybe I will try it once...
Subbed you, of course.
Greetings from Germany,
Edgar
Thanks, hope you give it a go!
great thanks very inspiring
Your welcome, glad you liked it!
getting closer to Christmas, so I am going to give this one a go at my club's next forging day. see how much of a mess I can make of it! :)
Send me pics johnbennett1959@gmail.com
I will!
You do Amazing work Sir. I subscribed.
Thank you, I'm glad you like my work & videos!
Question, if I wanted to make some basket twist handles for a cheese board would still recommend 1/4" stock or should I go to like 1/8" stock?
It depends on if you have ever forge welded a basket twist before.1/4" is a lot more forgiving than 1/8". Also square stock is more forgiving than round. My vote is for 1/4" square.
OK good advice, I have forged a few things but I am just getting started and this seemed like a doable and cheap project in the event I screw it up
why does he hit his hammer on the anvil every couple of strikes?
It is a habit from years of public demonstrations. It does help me keep a rhythm going but I mainly do it because it helps draw people to my booth. It also gives me a chance to see what is going on with the forging. Hope that answers your question and thanks for asking!
John Bennett Artist Blacksmith thanks for the reply. I asked because I notice many others do the same.
there are several myths and reasons. i always tell people it's because it sounds cool & it scares the devil away. more practically tho is that it's easier to keep a rhythm then to start/stop/start/stop & i use the bounce to adjust my grip. (i.e. choke up to be more accurate, slide out to really smack something)
I couldn't make out what you said you were using for flux.
Thank you
I use anti borax #2, It doesn't leach white powder from the weld for years like 20 mule team borax does. Sorry about that.
John Bennett Artist Blacksmith
Thank you so much for your prompt response.
John Bennett Artist Blacksmith where do you get that kind of borax?
Brett 1
I see it available on Amazon.
Ty
Does that hose clap already good for dumascus weld like even cable?
This was very good video thank YOU VERY MUCH for sharing
Not sure, I've never tried them on cable. But I would think it would.
Glad you liked it.
What's the difference in hot rolled and cold rolled?
Hot rolled is just what it says. it is rolled to size at high temp and when finished it has a mill scale coating. Cold rolled is rolled to size cold and therefore has a closer tolerance size wise and has no mill scale so it is cleaner. I personally think cold rolled Forge welds better.
I'm curious, what size of marble did you use?
It's right around 1inch
@@johnbennett7772 thank you John, I appreciate the response. I really enjoy your videos by the way, they're a great learning resource. Have a great evening!
I like it!
Hope you can make it Saturday!
Would like to, but I have to work at the lodge breakfast from 0400 - 0800.
You will be missed sir! Hope you have a good turn out!
what is the perpose of tapping on the anvil?
I developed the habit over the years, It draws people when you are doing public demos. It is just second nature now.
it also allows you to continue or keep your rhythm for hammering.
I would be scared to do the marble, because it is prone to exploding with that much heat.
I have only had one shatter, and it was more of crumble than shatter. Safety glasses a must and long sleeves would be a good idea.
Would be even better if we could get some close-up's of the process as the camera is too far away to see the details of your approach.
I have added 2 new cameras since this video was shot to get better close ups. I will try to shot some close ups and edit some in when time allows. Thank you for the feed back.
Thanks John. Looking forward to some more great videos to come. Any reason why you chose a coke forge over gas? Will you austenitize and temper complex carbon and stainless steels using the forge as well?
I use both coal and propane forges, For production I use propane. When shooting the videos I try to use coal because it's quieter. I also do all my forge welding with a coal forge. I do very little work with stainless steel and when I work with high carbon I normally use a propane forge and a oxy/acetylene torch.
It looks awesome but I don't think the sharp edge is good to have around kids
It would be a good idea to forge a small pigtail scroll on the bottom end if you have small children at home. Thanks for bringing that up!
John Bennett Artist Blacksmith I was thinking the same but moving the pigtails to a little above the basket but I have no idea if that would look good or not.
I guess I'm having trouble envisioning what you mean. i was talking about at the very end of the bottom point.
I'm also having trouble thinking of how what I typed would still look good
I was talking about the point also but I still don't know if it would look good
