- Minnie Evans is the embodiment of the visionary artist. She is an 88-year-old Black painter in North Carolina who has created a rich world of mythical animals, religious symbols, and natural beauty. The film explores the sources of her art, focusing on her mystical visions, on Airlie Garden, with its magnificent azaleas and swans, where she worked for 27 years and did most of her paintings, and on the African-Methodist church where the connection between her art and her religious fervor becomes evident. She tells about her mystical visions and traces her slave ancestry to her great grandmother's grandmother who was brought from Trinidad and sold as a slave in North Carolina. We see Minnie with her 101 year old mother and at the Evans' family reunion of six generations. Minnie Evans has had many solo exhibits, including one at the Whitney Museum in New York.
This is part of the Visions of Paradise series by Light-Saraf Films, composed of five 30-minute films that each portray the life and work of an American folk artist. The series is the generous gift of Light-Saraf to the American Visionary Art Museum.

We discovered Minnie Evans display Saturday while walking Arlie Gardens in Wilmington NC. Her exhibit stands out. It's a must see. It will move your spirit... Bless you angel, you are back with God watching over us. Thanks for all the beautiful messages from God!! ❤

I was 4 years old when I saw a giant sleeping in the central aisle of the church. I said it to the other girls, and I discovered, to my horror, that I was the only one that could see him. It was a catholic school. I was expelled for liar. This video is a blessing. Thank you, Minnie Evans.

It’s interesting that she’s from a lineage from Trinidad 🇹🇹 who came by way of South America onto the Caribbean islands. I wouldn’t be surprised if in her ancestry there was a shaman or she came from a long line of traditional healers. Their art work is strikingly similar with the same dress and native nuances that definitely aren’t of North Carolina. We come from a beautiful ancient people man.
