Have the narrative be that he’s not coming back. You have the Rock out there talking a whole bunch of trash about Roman not being for the family, and not being a real tribal chief, and all that. Then set up the match between Cody and the final boss for mania. Rock goes over, and to add insult to injury, just beats the piss out of Cody after he’s already gone over For any multitude of storyline reasons, Cody is left without any allies in that moment, and Triple H comes outs, sans blazer. No music. He’s rolling up his sleeves, and grabs a sledgehammer. He hits Rocky in the belt, and sets him up to take a pedigree, but something’s wrong… He sells a heart attack. The Rock laughs, and is about to put the kibosh on the American Nightmare, possibly ending his career when… * Tribal Chief music * The Rock looks menacingly to the stage, and we hear “ladies and gentlemen… something something something… but I didn’t come alone…” Then we see Roman flying in, with the vest on, to deliver a Superman punch, thus setting up the Rock to be WWE Champion for the entire year, and have Roman reclaim his title, as a babyface, at Mania 42
I think Roman doing a lot of his character progression off screen and coming back at peace/a notably better person kind of sucks as far as compelling tv. After all these years of being an awful tyrant, the redemption arc should definitely happen in front of fans. Coming back afrer licking his wounds and piecing his pride/ego back together shouldn't necessarily push him so far into babyface actions yet. Although, I do understand fans cheering makes it really hard to not bring him back a good guy. Its tough. I was just very excited to see a Roman who lost it all. The meltdown that would come from it. Seems we gotta skip that part with fans turning him babyface immediately.
