January 2024 Recap - HUGE PROGRESS on My Shower & Much More - Off Grid

- I feel like I got loads done this month, though it was mostly contained to one little corner of my place... the shower! I pushed that project forward a lot, but I also caught up on a few neglected outside tasks, too.
I hope you enjoy this one, thanks for watching!

I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Unless you have been alone, you don’t know how much time and effort it takes to start and complete a project. There are so many other things to consider, like eating, cleaning, fixing, editing, among a few, in addition to preparing for and actually doing the work. I think you are amazing!
And don't forget moving the camera around! 😁 Thanks, it's a lot of work but I do love it all! Except maybe the tiling. 🙂
Tremendous amount of work and thought put into your projects! 👏👏👏You have reason to be proud and happy about the progress made. The bathroom looks so nice with the Portuguese tiles. 😍Love it! Enjoy the sunshine!
Thanks so much!
I thought you were going to leave that shelf empty so Larry could use it as a landing when he comes and goes out the window. The plants and lights look great though. You were really, really busy in January, and you tackled several unpleasant jobs that you had been putting off. You really accomplished a lot. Good job!
I think Larry is too fat now to jump up! 😬 I've decided I'll make them a ladder that will be in the shower most of the time and I'll take it out when I need to use it... seems like an idea to try, anyway! I'm sure they'll find their way to the shelves!
WOW!! Pat yourself on the back. You really got a lot done!!
I hibernated in the cold grey gloomy southern Ontario. Watching TH-cam videos!!
Hugs from 🇨🇦
You've made so much progress on your home. The shower area is looking great. I know you're dreading the tool shed, but i have all the faith that you will do a fantastic job. Once you have a place to store your tools, you will wonder how you survived without it. Great videos, Kirsty.
Actually, despite putting it off continually, I'm excited about the shed! I'll feel better once I have the design figured out... I'm trying to decide on the type of roof. Plus I need to lay out the entire top terrace... but I'm very excited for this project! 😀
Bathroom plants - ferns! Don’t need huge amounts of light, love the humidity. Succulents need dry conditions, the humidity will kill them. You can increase light by adding some extra mirrors etc to cleverly reflect the light. If you increase the light levels a little bit more, you could try growing some orchids - they love humid environments too (but need a lot more light than ferns)
Thanks for the tips! I'll likely try a few things when the time comes and I'll have a skylight in the far future. Mirrors are a cool idea!
What i love most about ur channel Kirsty is that ur doing ur life ur way, u just happen to film it n let us watch along on TH-cam, keep going at ur pace. ❤❤❤
Yay!
Lots of January progress feels good, right? Congrats!
We did two tiled kitchen walls all the way to the ceiling. So, I can empathize with the strain of the work involved, and the learning curve.
We learned how using just enough mortar, (ah that sweet spot), so it doesn't gush up between the tiles, worked well.
My husband laid the tiles.
We actually did them at a diagonal, which we liked more.
It was my job to grout both walls.
I'm no spring chicken, so it was still an all day affair doing one wall at a time.
I was glad when it was over, and would do it again... just to save mula $$
Our counter tops we had professionals do, thank my lucky fairy stars for that!
Love your dedication to your adorable, evolving little homestead. Look forward to seeing more bathroom completion. ❤
Tiling is definitely not my favourite... yet! Maybe it'll get better. Glad to know others are just having a go at these things will success! 🙂
Recently subscribed and really enjoy your videos and the way you prioritise having fun and learning rather than driving yourself to complete every project. It's how we all work, secretly! Also enjoying seeing natural building. I have a lime stone cottage and need to to some pointing, so I'm getting some good tips. I never considered that clay might work for stone walls, possibly for insulation too??. Thanks for all the work you put in to share this journey.
Hi, welcome! I love sharing natural building stuff! Clay is usually used as more of a dense mass (like stone) to achieve thermal mass and the heat retention benefits that brings. Insulation is more from lighter things like straw bale... though perhaps a straw-heavy cob mix could be a bit insulating but it's not the best material for that.
Thank you! I think I have some reading to do.@@PortugalfromScratch
Yes there’s a big difference between thermal mass and insulation and you tend to have to choose one or the other depending on your climate. It’s interesting stuff!
If you. Are a snack ladder for the cats to get out you could use it also to ha g towels. Then move it out when you have a shower within reach to get a dry towel. Also a good place to fold the towel to dry.
Ah that’s a great idea, thanks!
Thanks for the regular inspo, from an Aussie who is building from scratch.😊
Amazing, thanks so much!
You had a super productive month! Congrats. Love your videos and I always look forward to them!
Glad to hear that, thanks for watching! 😁
Recaps are not my favs honestly but I am a dedicated watcher so let it be know I really love your videos, content and your style. Great job in the shower it’s looking so nice.
Haha well thanks for tuning in anyway! I imagine one day I'll look back on my videos and the recaps will be an easy way to see what I've done. 🙂
Yes that’s true. I like recaps especially when I haven watched a new YT and I can catch up with months video. But I watch everything diligently. A big big fan. But I still give you a like anyways. So impressed with your skills. So lovely to watch you work.
I love them. Probably because I have a similar system! Except mine are all in a spiral bound notebook. Indoors chores and outdoors. I have a separate system for all my finances also. Decades worth on both!
Thanks, I'm away happy to see you in the comments. 😁
I love a good list! 😁
This is the year you will finish your bathroom. 🎉
Yes!! 🎉
you will love tilling in no time. Go for it!
I still have more to do, so I hope it grows on me! 😀
Kirsty, I think you nailed the tiling work. The tiles look really nice. You sure accomplished a lot in January especially when you were under the weather. On to February. 😊
So many jobs you have accomplished in January..... Bravissima👍👏❤
It was busy! Thanks!
Such a great month have loved watching you. Your techniques and application are the best in youtube.looking forward to February
Thanks so much! Onward to February! 😀
You asked for plant advice…..i have great success with philodrendoms. Pretty hardy and love how they cascade over a shelf.
Thanks so much! A cascading plant is even better! 😁
What a good idea to look back at projects over the month, it gives a sense of achievement and keeps enthusiasm going. The cats have a wonderful life, so much land and freedom. I think your tiles looks fine, love your choice of tiles. Best wishes.
I think so too! It’s sort of like a diary for me. 🙂
You’ve made incredible January progress! Keep it up! So inspiring- you have no idea!
Thanks! Onward!!
For many, January is a bit of a slump after Christmas, but you had such a productive month. It's a great start to the year, and towards getting your shower back. Looking forward to seeing the tool shed project. Thanks for sharing. :)
I was weirdly motivated in January! I guess the shower stuff has gotten me fired up to finish... onward!
Hey Kirsty, I just watched a video that will interest you, called: Waterproof lime finishes for bathrooms. The channel is called Core Conservative - Your shower is looking good and the tiles are nice 👍
Ooh thanks so much, I’ll check it out!
Loved your recaps! Didn't comment on last shower video, but love the tile in the sink area, and the shower slope/drainage was well done! You accomplished a lot in January. Kudos! Hugs to Mikey and Larry! Cheers from Ontario 🇨🇦
Thanks so much! They are both tricky jobs so I'm happy they're done!
Busy month you had. Everything is all coming together. Great job. I love your videos.
It was a lot busier than I thought! 😀
I think your tiles turned out lovely! I will grant you that it looked scary but they look great!
Thank you!
You got a lot done in January and the place is looking so nice. Great progress. Yes, enjoy the weather with walks and biking.
Thanks so much! I'm definitely loving this weather!
Have really enjoyed seeing the progress on the shower. I’m sure your next foray into tiling will be easier. Really looking forward to seeing it completed!
I hope so! I’m excited to try again. 😁
Sanservieria or snake plants grow in low light
Thanks!
You are lady of many talents! The thought of tiling would fill me with fear...so looking forward to the next stage you plan for the shower. 😊
It did and still does! 😁 But only one way to get better at it...
Enjoyed your recap, you certainly accomplished a lot of jobs. The tiling looked very hard to mean & admire you working through that even though you did not like it. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks! Yes... tiling isn't fun and still more to do! 😬
Fantastic your nearly at 10K
Getting closer! 😀
Multiple practice spots. Good planning!
I'm happy to have that little sneaky spot! 😀
Fantastic work Kirsty! ❤
Great stuff done or nearly done. Wish you'd finish the shower and loo before you think of starting any other big projects. Get some comforts sorted! Look forward to February stuff, whatever you do.
Yes I hope to push on as much as I can with both things! Thanks!
Tiles and I have a complicated relationship. I am willing to give it another go but with more knowledge this time.
Haha, I think that same is true for me and tiles, too!
January was work heavy for sure, happy to see you got a trip to Lisbon in. Your shower/bathroom is coming along nicely, bucket showers are a bitch, but worth the inconvenience to get a thing of beauty. I only just have finished framing my bathroom and been doing bucket showers/friend showers since end of September 😂 i came across an old solid wood door with a stained glass window for my door, so if i'd been further ahead i would have missed that. Its the little things (wondering how i'm going to manage some bottle lights in mine now too) 😂 thanks for a great month. ❤
I have the most magical thing... it's a shower head on a tube with a pump at the end and it uses a little motor that charges my USB to pump the water. I think it was around €25 a fe years ago. So great... I have a nice, big bucket and I just heat that as needed. But the problem now is that my drain is higher than the level of my floor so my shower corner is out of commission. 😁 Good luck with your project ideas!
You make a great progress this year and all is amazing👍
Thanks!
Feb will be interesting🙂👍👍🇨🇦
I hope so!
Well done kirsty, you are always moving forward, the shower is coming along nicely. You seem to stress about doing jobs that you haven't done before, but when you get stuck in you get it done. Thanks for bringing ginger us along o your journey. You are doing an amazing job😊
Yes it's always those things I've never done that cause a bit of anxiety but, usually, once I get started it's all ok. Tiling might be the exception though I think I did ok in the end. 🙂
@PortugalfromScratch you done a great job on the tiles. Well impressed at your tiling skills
I really enjoy your videos to the point I even put notifications belo on and I don't do that too often (otherwise my phone would be constantly buzzing and that drives me insane 😂).
Love this form of recap most especially because of how it lights you up and inspires you further.
Tiling..... You did a fantastic job and shouldn't knock yourself down. You are going to knock the shower tiling out of the park.
Good luck for February and will be watching from a very cold, very wet and very windy UK 😂😂
Ooh, I'm very happy to hear that, thanks! I hope the weather improves there... rain on the way here next week, but always welcome!
Kristy you are to hard on yourself. The work you are doing is looking great, I really like your floor tiling. Perfectionist and first times are very stressful they go hand in hand, I know it well. I'm also glad you can do other enjoyable things even though it may take you much longer to complete your project, this use to drive me crazy but now I totally understand to get away so no big mistake might happen. Keep on keeping on ❤
Yep! Done is better than perfect, though! 😁 Yes I often stop when I'm getting tired... there's always loads to do with editing anyway so better not to make work mistakes, I think.
I think you beat yourself up on the tiling. It looks great. The small tiles o shower floor should be easier as the backing spaces larger chunks of tile.
I have a feeling you put on the adhesive too thick. Might check that, so it isn’t getting over the top of the tiles.
Remember: perfection is the enemy of the good .
I think so too... thinner next time. I was overwhelmed but I'm getting excited again to give it another go. I've busy this weekend... Monday will be the day I try to finish the tiles. 🙂
Good job, love your tiles
Thank you!
I can foresee how fabulous the workshop will be to get your tiny house back for your own peaceful space. Re the covered window I do recall watching a TH-cam channel build a bespoke frame and glass for theirs. It was way back in the early days of the Indie Project when they were doing up their tiny house on their land. They might be able to point you to the footage.
I’m excited for the tool shed, for sure! For the window, it’s the stone and box I need to figure out which will be tricky already. I’m not up for making a whole window… at least not yet. Maybe one day! 😀 I have a local guy who can do it.
My cat, who is a regular viewer of your channel, was disappointed that the guys haven’t shown up. 😊 Lot’s of work done, way more ahead. When are your parents back?
Oh no! Sorry, my recaps are usually work-focused though I also noticed their absence. Perhaps I need a month cat update, too? 😁 They get back late April for a month.
@@PortugalfromScratchthey were busy doing secret cat things.
Yes, no doubt!
You did a lot of work last month!! Your shower looks really nice. Some thoughts on indoor plants.....birds nest fern, peperomia, prayer plant, zebra plant, arrow head ivy, pothos ivy, spider plant, do well in low light. I think that your low light is really low light. Not sure if anything will thrive there. I love gardening. I have a lot of house plants under my porch. Inside I have a few artificial plants just because it's easier. Watering is easier, you don't have problems with spider mites and the like.
Amazing, thanks for the suggestions!
Great month.
It was, thanks!
Thanks!
Way to go Kirsty!! You've accomplished so much this month. You're on fire, girl. I hope February is a fun one and the weather stays reasonable. I hear you when you are concerned that it might not cool down. Here in Toronto, we had one super cold week, but other than that, it's almost been warm enough to wear my not-so-cold tweed coat. Yikes! Anyway, lots of stars on your chart for January and I see a sparkle in your eyes that wasn't there before. I'm soooo glad! BTW, your blue tshirt, front door, etc. is a great colour on you! 👍👍👍👍😄
Wow that's crazy for Toronto in January! We do have some cold nights coming up, but the sunny days have been very warm lately. Rain next week, I think. 🙂 Ooh... lots of stars? Exciting! I'm on a boozeless attempted health kick at the moment so that could be it! 😁
@@PortugalfromScratch Whatever you're doing, keep it up! Congrats on all you've done. I know we're Canadian, but be proud of that and give yourself a pat on the back!! There's nothing like learning and doing to make yourself feel better, but I know that's not always as easy as it sounds. 💗
Thanks for the encouragement!
Use a small notched trowel to have better control.
Good tip, thanks!
That wall is so nice, the combo of clay and wood, and the little lights. Anyway, I think I missed where you said why you're not adding the last tile in that corner? Soon you will be done with the bathroom and can spend months and months outside as the weather gets warmer.
Thanks! I actually didn't say... I'm going to set the vanity type thing on top of the tiles, so it'll be covered up by that. it's hard to explain because I don't have a full design just yet. 😁
Ah, I see!
Great progress. I love the tilings so far. Can’t wait to see the shower tiles.
Thanks, me too! 😁
awesome and amazing. love it!
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Lots of progress, Kristy! Great Job! I am anxiously waiting for the Tool Shed? I can't wait until you have a place to keep and use your nice selection of tools! Get them put away outside your living space?
Haha yes, I know you are waiting for that one! I have a bunch of outdoor things to continue this week but the toolshed foundation and layout of the top terrace are priorities for February, for sure!
I saw a video saying live ground cover is better than mulch. So you can just cut your path through your forest and leave the grass growing until you have time to use that part of the ground.
Good idea, thanks!
January was a huge leap forward 💪
It definitely was!
Great job!
Thanks!
Loved it you rocked an rolled when you started but the cold weather you more less was a plus to stay in the weather they’re does look beautiful enjoy an see you Friday 👀✋👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
The weather right now is glorious! 😀 See you Friday!
Congrats on getting so much work done...I'll have to check out Ebike.
Thanks! It's such a fun bike!
I love watching your videos. You think they’re boring to watch but I swear I would watch even if you just propped the camera up and left it recording and then just sped through the playback or Timelapse. I even think it would be cool if you stated you actual time, like start and stop. This stuff looks fast and easy on TH-cam but I know it can take hours and hours. Excited to see what you do with the rest of the shower. I know you got lots of advice too. Hopefully, some has been😊 useful.
Glad to know that you like my stuff, thanks! Things that a very long time when I'm filming so that's while I'll often do a 'see you soon when it's done' thing... it takes the pressure off when the camera is off. But it's enjoyable to share things!!
