    YIKES!, the flashing lights are "ditch lights", which were more common on European trains decades ago. Theyre now required on North American locomotives, and can be ordered with or without the alternating flashing feature. They replaced the ancient "figure 8" Mars lights on a lot of locomotives that originally had them. In this particular example, the alternating ditch lights are incorporated in the tail end marker lights, which may lead to some confusion.

      @@ColinFilmsTrains freight locomotives in the US no longer have "marker lights", which were in different locations on individual engine styles, and theorhetically, there are no longer cabooses that had marker lights either, theyve been replaced by FRED. However, most passenger rail operations in the US still have red marker lights on the end cars and the locomotives that are directionally controlled, similar to the one in your video, but the US ditch lights are separate from the marker lights, on both cab cars and engines.
