You can look in the comics to find them both fighting it out in Hyper forms, equally matching, going at it with so much power entire zones got obliterated. Knuckles even kicked Shadow's ass once. Before the canon changes, he was far from a joke.

That was an amazingly animated fight Ded, loved how Knuckles gained a new transformation by absorbing more of the Master Emeralds power!! I’d like to think Knuckles feels way more focused in Chaos Knuckles, way more cool-headed letting him wait for openings.
Holy crap with no exaggeration this is by far the best sprite animations I've ever seen mainly due to not indulging myself in them but I've still seen plenty in the past. Well there is Hyper Knuckles in the comics, and he could stand up to Super Sonic. Even beat Shadow at one point. But then the canon of the comics was very different. The 2006 anime and newer games killed that and turned Knuckles into a joke unfortunately. Before that, Knuckles was a legitimate rival to Sonic that could match him equally in a fight when pushed and won just as many rounds against him as he lost.

He could've been able to win the War in Forces by Himself if Infinite was never Involved and Sonic was nowhere to be Found, but Sega never seems to let other Characters have a Chance to shine, kind of like how Dragonball has turned out now.

In the end, someone recognized the true potential of knuckles, he's really cool, he's seen by everyone as a joke, in my opinion, he's one of the most powerful characters in the sonic universe, he started to be remembered after the movie sonic 2 and the knuckles series, I hope they continue with many improvements from knuckles in the end one of the best characters in sonic 3 after swadol I sincerely hope they do the same with knuckles in the next sonic films
