    Revisiting this speech again. This is the coolest speech, informal, off the cuff, wondeful delivery. From beginning to end (go to Part 2), it takes one back to the time when we had this outstanding and brilliant man as our President. He was amazing. A speed reader, he could read a book in a couple of hours, and 5 newspapers front to back in less than an hour, and absorb it all. And to top it all off, he said "no" to the generals. What a terrible loss.

    This man's death was one of the most terrible, most tragic moments in the history of this country. He was an umitigated genius with the spoken word. His death destroyed this country.

    This is the way a president should carry himself. He was so handsome, charming, and articulate. Amazing.

    JFK did not want to be labeled: "liberal", "conservative," etc. He was an independent & pragmatic thinker. On some issues, he was ahead of his time.
    Not everything written about JFK is true or a fair assessment. The full story is not in on his Presidency yet. Historians now rate him as the 6th greatest President. Having flaws doesn't mean that you don't also have virtues. Here we are listening to one of the greatest speakers to ever hold the office of the Presidency!

    A favorite JFK presentation. Beginning with the ABC intro and ending with God Bless America, it gives me a you are there feeling. I feel transported back to the time when JFK was our President.. I love this speech! It displays his wonderful speaking style, his passionate and rhythmic delivery. No one can hold a candle to him. If you enjoy Part 1, go on to Part 2. It is equally wonderful with a classic JFK ending. God bless President Kennedy.

    Notice how President Kennedy speaks in paragraphs --- not in soundbites. He is willing to build an idea through multiple sentences, let the rhetoric build to a logical conclusion and then take the applause. Today, most public speeches seem to be built to get applause first, ideas second.

    @time2act1001 Thanks for your story. I was in the 8th grade in Catholic School in Los Angeles. I was in line with other students returning to class after morning recess. One of the only Republicans in my class (ultra conservative John Bircher type) said to a group of us: "Hey, Kennedy's been shot." I thought he was joking. He acted happy. The whole school went over to the Church to pray after we heard the final news that he had died. It was a sad time. It is still hard to believe.

      Why do you say that? He comes to the lectern with papers in his hand and looks down repeatedly at them while speaking. This is the rhythm he uses when reading a speech, not when ad libbing.

      @@smadaf According to my friend Clint Hill, JFK had a photographic memory and rarely needed notes for his speeches. The papers you regarded were the agenda for that particular event NOT notes of his speech.

    What a great speech, and doesn't JFK's thoughtful arguement in favor of medicare sounds strangely familiar. JFK's plan -- as is Obama's today -- was fiercely attacked by those who were deliberately misinformed. The statesquo fights hard to preserve it's power -- today as in the1960's. Sadly, Kennedy didn't live to see his bill become law; and would probably be shocked to know that the goal of universal health care has still not been achieved some 40+ years later.

    Since the advent of the tele-prompter it is often easy to forget that political figures had to read from a hard-copy text (probably analogous to today's Kindle/iPad). While both the tele-prompter and hard-copy texts present their own challenges of use, I can't help but think reading from a hard-copy text was more difficult.

    I reckon this was at the latest, mid-1962. The old ABC logos were in use then; Paul Rand's design didn't take effect until the outset of the 1962-63 season, with G. Dean Smith's 'circle 7' logo spreading to its O&O's a few months later.

    to norr4636- you do realize that Reagan raised taxes 11 times. You do know that liberal then is the same as it is now. If FDR is our most liberal of Presidents, if Kennedy is making a case for Universal health care, how is today any different in its definition? Reagan and Bush's economic stance, the same one that every Republican makes isn't the same as Kennedy. It isn't even close. And as far as spending, you do realize that when you try to make a case about spending, whether it is Obama or whomever else, the economy doesn't reset on January 20, when we get a new president. Other programs, other commitments from previous administrations differ and have lasting changes on our economy. And lets not forget that the Bush tax cuts of 01' and 03' are the most expensive in history and were not paid for. Tax cuts don't grow an economy. And, to further a point, if their economic plans, being close to Kennedy by your standards, are that effective, I must ask why Bush's economy didn't boom like it did so in the 60's? As you are a conservative democrat, liberal doesn't mean weak, or uncommitted in regards to foreign policy. You can't compare the world of the 30's and 40's to the 60's and now in regards to foreign policy. If businesses were to create more jobs, we gave them more breaks, it would work, but we live in an economy of greed, and you cannot excuse that. And even at that, it should be noted that there are bills that are aimed at aiding business abroad to come here to the U.S. and hire, and set up here; those bills being stalled in the House by an oppositional-Republican congress. There are spending cuts that should be made-responsibly, as a build for austerity in this country would be a great mistake, but let's not use JFK's economic tax plan as the center piece for Bush and Reagan as a way to define and understand what those two Presidents did as a way to create a better economy. What Bush and Regan did were different.
    The argument that JFK's economic policies are more closely aligned with the modern GOP than Democrats is doubly attractive for conservatives. They can paint their tax cut-centric policies as having a rich bipartisan past abandoned by the modern left-and tweak liberals by absconding with one of their icons.
    The notion of Kennedy as supply-side forerunner is a powerful myth, but it is a myth. Context is key. Conservatives love to quote a speech Kennedy gave at the Economic Club of New York in December 1962. Here's one quote-I've italicized the crucial part often left out: "Our present tax system, developed as it was, in good part, during World War II to restrain growth, exerts too heavy a drag on growth in peace time; that it siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power; that it reduces the financial incentives for personal effort, investment, and risk-taking." JFK was not expounding an implacable economic philosophy; he was speaking about a very specific circumstance. The top marginal tax rate was 91 percent, which JFK wanted reduced to a "more sensible" 65 percent. Compare that with today's 35 percent top rate, and ask: If supply-siders are so enamored of JFK's tax policies, would they advocate a return to a "more sensible" 65 percent top rate? Applying Kennedy's tax talk to the current structure, JFK biographer Robert Dallek says, is like comparing "apples and watermelons."

    JFK supported an expansion of health insurance for seniors. That is a larger form of Government. The Public Welfare Amendments of 1962 provided for greater Federal sharing in the cost of rehabilitative services to applicants, recipients, and persons likely to become applicants for public assistance. Also, JFK wasn't some neo-con as JFK opposed the concept of a Pax Americana by 1963, he opposed another invasion of Cuba, and he wanted future peace negoitations with the Soviets by '63.

  • @jazzgtrplayer
    @jazzgtrplayer 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @norr4636 Many people are denied the possibility of buying health insurance, even for conditions they were born with. Very few people would say they aren't willing to pay in, given the possibility. And the the young folks who are health should be the ones paying in to pay for the older folks who aren't... and when they're old and sick, the young folks will pay for them. No one can escape medical problems indefinitely and those who think they can are not realistic.

    @norr4636 One, social security will only not be around if nothing is done. It is 29 years until payouts have to be lowered. Do you believe there is nothing that can be done in that time to fix the system? Two, do you believe the profit-driven insurance industry is working? I don't think the government should control healthcare. I do, however, think it should ensure we have access to it. Should kids really be born considered uninsurable? Should adults die for lack of money? Is that right?

  • @jazzgtrplayer
    @jazzgtrplayer 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @norr4636 I assume you are also against insurance in principle as well? Because you described the entire concept of insurance. Everyone pays in and everyone gets it if they need it. The larger and more diverse the risk pool, the less everyone has to pay. That's all insurance is. You call that picking up my slack? If you understand the concept of insurance, you should understand why your argument against it does not add up.

  • @RJN8580
    @RJN8580 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jazzgtrplayer I'm not agianst insurance for people if you pay for it yourself. Older Americans should have a safety net, but not 18-45 age range...Sorry, but tax payers should not be paying for young folks who barely goes to the doctor or get sick.....Personal responsibility is in order....

JFK had liberal inclinations and I believe became more so as time went by -- but was a realist & pragmatic and moved slowly on issues. He certainly wasn't a conservative -- the John Birchers HATED him!

That bill would have done everything for African Americans.
