I think at this point Gullfoss might be a must get for anyone mixing orchestral music. Does things us mere humans could never possibly do! Great Video!
oh cool thanks for sharing! i remember from older videos that you boosted the air more not just for bass with proq3 is it better with ccadvanced? same for bass boost

Hey! It doesn't matter that much, you could juse use a normal EQ and a tiny bit of tape saturation, optional, small difference.
Thanks a lot for the video! What are your thoughts on using Panagement 2 for panning and separation?

Hey I'm not a fan I don't think panagement really works that well on stereo sources. It doesn't do the magic precedence does. Stereo sources need something very subtle close to balance panning or you get weird sounds.
8:38 How does using the doubler narrow the panning? I thought the idea was that using the doubler meant you can be more extreme with panning (as you're faking some ERs to keep the positioning sounding natural)? Do you mean that the doubler is acting in parallel, and not going through precedence? Thanks for the tips, as always!
You are right. He means that if you use the Doubler, because you are faking some reflections from the room in parallel, it will sound like it's %25-30 panned right even though you panned the actual instrument %45 right. So you can go more extreme with the initial panning when using the doubler effect.
@@BillyPalmerMusic You are welcome! Maybe we should start a Discord community focused around mixing and mastering orchestral music. I have noticed there are only a couple of Discord communities for cinematic orchestral music. But the existing ones are more focused on production. So that would be awesome!
Hey Joel, wanted to know if you had any tips for eq'ing the Violin I's when they are playing harmonics in this library; for some reason they tend to have a lot of mic sound that slips through that is difficult to remove (for me haha). Any tips for removing mic noise from quiet passages in libraries would be appreciated more generally. Love the work you do and I'm going to have to hire you to mix a track of mine one of these days!
at 3:09 how come you use patch work to load the sp2016 reverb if only one channel of the patchwork is enabled? Why not just use the sp2016 in serial without patchwork?

I use patchwork as a preset manager haha. It's the ultimate preset manager since you can save chains or just simple plugins with specific settings. So my favourite settings are all in one list. On several plugins.
Thanks so much for this walkthrough. Not sure if I missed it, but what mics are used for this mix? Is it default mix, or a custom mix of the CTR mics? That doubler trick, first time I've seen it, makes an enormous difference!

Hey! I used the default mix. Glad you like the trick ;)
I'm wondering if you apply this trick only for tracks where strings is the main feature, or do you use it as well on really busy tracks where strings only play harmony and are not the main element ?

hahahahaha, just got it and i completely agree.
Encore une vidéo très intéressante, comme toujours! Merci 🙂
Eye opening
The video you've all been waiting for ! By the way Joel, I'd love to see a small walkthrough of your "Homecoming" piece :)

I think you would be the right guy to do an exclusive video on OTT and orchestral music?
Super helpful, thanks a lot Joël! A similar Video for Metropolis Ark 1 would be amazing! :)
Nice!
