Because Martin is so diverse musically ( English/Celtic/Appalachian/Gospel/Banjo/Songwriter his slide playing gets overlooked. He is a monster slide player.

A funny story: Martin Simpson was participating in a slide guitar workshop on a small side stage at a big festival in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. A local musician was playing his own re-imagining of Dust My Broom, retitled "Ain't Gonna Dust My Broom No More, and just as Martin took a swig of water, the guy sang " I ain't gonna choke my chicken no more", and Martin laughed so hard he spewed out the water from his mouth and nose and was nearly choking on it! This was in 1992.....

Martin was a huge star in UK and Europe before anyone had heard of Stevie Ray.

My absolute favorite folk guitarist/recording artist- although he does so much more than "folk". It's hard to classify him, which is why I enjoy him even more.

I first saw Martin at the Soles arms in London. One way of learning how to play the guitar is to travel around the world. But, If you REALLY want to learn, travel around the United States Of America. Where else would you find Ramblin Jack Elliot, Earl Scruggs, Lightning Hopkins. Yep, he travelled and now we reap what he sowed. Class.

I've been in a guitar seminar with him - it's a combination of flicking downward on the strings with the back of the fingernail(s)(like flicking a spitball), with the index and/or middle, and thumping the soundboard with another finger (usually the ring finger). Very similar to a combination rasgueado and golpe (tap) as done by flamenco guitarists. Do it slowly in whatever rhythmic grouping you want - triplets, etc.

I had the privilege of attending Richard Thompson's "Frets & Refrains" acoustic guitar and songwriting camp in the Catskills. I took Martin's classes, which was a real treat. He is the consummate gentleman, a virtuoso with a passion for all music, which he brought to his master classes.

Put her in G an let the good slide do the rest, so many good tunes in this tuning from trad Irish to Delta blues and all the way back home again. Knock-on vocals seal the deal, Hummin'!

Does anyone know anything about the techniques he uses there between verses where he kinda plucks and taps twice..(poor description but the best I could do) it sound like galloping...Anything about the whole technique he uses here?? Where or how to go about learning it?

If you are mystified by the lyric about the woman who's got "Elgin movements from her head down to her toes", it's referring to an "Elgin" street- sweeping machine, where one part of it jiggles or rotates in one direction and another part of the machine jiggles in the other direction as it slowly rolls up the street. Like a woman who has a sexy walk with a side to side sway !.

Such technical playing of the song but where is the SOUL, where is the BLUES? This is an example of the misappropriation of the original culture.
