For anyone reading, I have a 6 gal with just organic dirt and no fish atm. I put the dirt in without baking/microwaving/etc and I got an awful family of loud chirping bugs! They were such a pain to get rid of without a fish to munch on them, so there are potential benefits to heat treating the dirt!

Love it.. on my second one.. but don’t forget .. a-lot of the tech geeks Like to change there aquascaping every couple of months. So it wouldn’t be practical for everyone.. keep pushing it…a natural aquarium is more fun to absurd..😊

i use polystrene box and filled it with clayish soil. put water to let it fill in the gap and leave it overnight. then drain the water and let the soil dried up for few days. clay soil when dried it will clump together like brick because bricks are made from compacted clay that they burnt. after it's dried, i add water and let it overnight. i then drain the water and refill it again until it clears. then it's good to plant. it put it on my car porch so it gets partial natural sun. i didn't use artificial light. it's already few months and the water is getting better. no fertilizer needed. i only top up with water from my fish tank. plants getting explosive growth after i add co2 from yeast+sugar.

this method is without using sand cap. i literally plant in the soil.

Dirted tanks are the best tanks

Yes wet sand is not the best. I once waited 7 days for some wet rinsed beach sand to dry in hot summer conditions. I gave up after a week! Sand takes a huge amount of time to dry… dry sand is great for this method of doing a dirted tank.

I appreciate the video but I don't understand. Your adding a soil that's specifically designed to trap air to a design were you need the exact opposite traits

If I cap eco complete with sand will the sand just sink to the bottom eventually?

You could have made side walls of sand first, the to add soil. This kind of substrate encourages algae growth.

and how does it encourage algae growth?

Rabia, yes natural dirt does encourage algae, but it can be managed and the sand cap will mostly reduce this problem. The thing with dirt is it depends how nutrient rich it is - there are thousands of types of dirt in the world. Black soil, potting mix is very rich but this is also what plants need. I have a tank at the moment with no capping at all, simply pure black rich garden soil (taken from my garden) and the water is always green and it is a challenge, but I have stuck with it and it is doing OK. I grow moss in it. Is it hard? Yes, probably the hardest plant tank I have ever done but worth it. Sometimes i drop the water level and do a partial water change to clear it. Done this twice in 6 months. The moss is growing very well.
