    Marillion are one of those bands that get little respect but who have lasted and produced some incredible music over the last 40yrs. Check out their early music with Fish on vocals, Script for a Jesters Tear, Jigsaw or Forgotten sons.

      I think composition-wise Ocean Cloud suffers a bit from the same problem as the New Kings does in places, in that some of the transititions to new sections are less than subtle... it's almost like a straight cut or a hard switch here and there (this always has been a bit of a problem with many of their long-tracks)... in my honest opinion they have more deserving songs (Neverland indeed, yes - but also Quartz, Power, the Great Escape, Berlin, Happiness is the Road, White Paper. this is the 21st Century (*pointless end-noodling aside hehe), Montreal, yadda yadda - not to mention some of the great Fish-era stuff like Fugazi, Incubus and White Russian - all these are pure class from start to finish*

    Marillion are loved world wide, I believe they invented crowd funding. They once back in the 90’s announced a new album tour and the USA was not part of the itinerary due to the expense. The American Marillion fan base (without band provocation) raised enough money for them to get to the USA and the rest is music history.

    • @garanceadrosehn9691
      @garanceadrosehn9691 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Hi Doug.
    Glad you had a chance to experience Marillion at this level.
    I've been following them since the mid-80's and they have become one of my, if not my, favorite band[s].
    They're leaders in a variety of ancillary fields:
    • They're one of , if not the, first bands to: go online/have a website that they control
    • Crowd-fund both their studio work and their concerts
    • Now crowd-funding their INSURANCE for cancellations due to Covid/illnesses/unforeseen catastrophic events [with a refund policy to boot]
    • Hold fan-specific events - Marillion Weekend - across the globe, etc.
    • They also took complete control of their work by ending their contracts with the music industry and taking everything in-house
    Additionally, they have nearly ALL of the concerts they've performed over the past two+ decades available for download via their website. Yes, you have to pay for them but they're worth it. You get to hear and experience a band night after night playing to audiences across the world, hear the band's interactions and uncompromising musicality and abilities, the mistakes, the goofiness and, frankly, the love they share with and for their audiences.
    Paul Burton: I agree with your comment on Rothery. Spot-on.
    Ditto to Lou D: I'm fairly certain you're correct: they invented crowd-funding
    ChrisEchoes: Absolutely see them LIVE! Even if it's just one of their DVDs. They're fantastic. Some of the most emotional work you will witness.
    Cheers for your wonderful and expert review of Marillion.

    When you want to check out their earlier (Fish era) music, try something from the album Clutching at Straws. I’d recommend listening to the first 3 songs (Hotel Hobbies / Warm Wet Circles / That Time of the Night) together as one suite.

    There are really two different Marillions. The first four albums are with the charismatic Scottish singer Fish and then he left and Steve Hogarth took over taking them in a different direction but both eras have lots to offer. I would recommend a further reaction to Marillion on Seasons End, Splintering Heart, The Space live at The Albert Hall and with Fish on Hotel Hobbies/Warm Wet Circles/That time of The Night Trilogy. White Russian or the full Misplaced Childhood album. If you get the chance go and see them live!

    YES!!!! Marillion!! A band well deserving of your attention! And as it happens they invented crowdfunding. I think you'd enjoy Out Of This World from the Afraid Of Sunlight album. It about Donald Campbell and the Bluebird water speed record and is a great example of the emotional gut punch that Marillion can deliver.

    • @BordersJambo
      @BordersJambo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When they play it live, they usually do it to a backdrop of Donald Campbell making his fateful attempt, and it's one of the most emotionally affecting things I've ever seen on stage. H's passion & vocal delivery, and Marillion's tasteful & beautiful music just hits you right between the eyes. Incredible band, especially live.

    Dear Doug! Finally you discovered my new favorite band. I've suggested you many times in the comments this band with no luck....but now I'm glad you finally found them. I've discovered them by accident just last year and they became my new favorite. Their huge discography will keep me busy for long time. Many good suggestion in blw comments. In my last comment I think I suggested you song GAZA. In fact I like the whole album fm where this song is; Sounds that can't be made. Hope to see more Marrilion on your channel in future. Thanks Doug

    Thank you for sharing your insights on Marillion's music. I've enjoyed listening & watching your reactions to it very much. I'm 53 and have been listening to Marillion since I was 17. They are my all-time favorite band, not just for the music, but for all the things they stand for: artistry, creativity, unity and stability. I'm just in love with them, I always felt like they are my friends or brothers. I hope you'd do some more digging on their catalog on your own and share some of it with us soon. Cheers from Istanbul, Serdar.

    When I was a teenager in the early 80 s here in Germany, they introduced this band on a TV-Show with:" Here comes a band, that makes Cinema for the ears." And I love them since then. They changed the Singer from Fish to Steve Hogarth and I love both. Marillion is so special and just wonderful. "Brave", "Woke up", "100 Nights" are my favorite Songs. That engine noise in the final section is a spitfire aka Battle of Britain is referring to the last time the British people joined together to meet a common threat and that we would be unlikely to do that in modern times because the world has changed to everyone for themselves. I think the crash in section 3 is the 2008 financial crash and questions if it was actually a manufactured crisis which allowed some folks to make a lot of money from it. I’m British and I’m seeing this song from a brit band in a very British perspective though. Massive fan of these guys have been since they started used to work and live near Aylesbury UK were they originally formed.
