- Ian Darke and Craig Burley join Dan Thomas to discuss the recently published ESPN FC list of the top 50 worst Premier League transfers of all time. Darke remembers the hilarious story of Ali Dia at Southampton coming on as a substitute after claiming he was George Weah’s cousin, and Burley recounts the same player having a trial at Chelsea when Glenn Hoddle was manager and how unimpressed he and his teammates were by him. Plus, the guys discuss Mario Balotelli’s troubled time at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers and Andriy Shevchenko’s underwhelming spell in London with Chelsea.

I could listen to Darke tell premier league stories all day long
Petar Zijic he knows his boxing too
That's Hilarious!!
That guy's a proper Genius 🤣🤣
Ali Dia the Legend
To figure out Worst pundits of football might not be that difficult.
Everyone of them is assembled in ESPN FC
Mangala to City for 40M plus??
It is on the list
How Torres is still considered a flop at Chelsea in hindsight is absolutely ridiculous. If anybody actually watched Chelsea play week in week out, you'd know his input was far beyond goals. He was an exceptional team player, especially with his link up play and crossing. Plus he played a key role in winning the 2012 Champions League, 2012 FA Cup, 2013 Europa League. Pretty good return on investment for £50+mil, considering transfer fees now.
@john dunne morata is a Chelsea flop
@john dunne what did he actually do at Liverpool? Scored a few goals sure, but never won a single trophy.
Amaan A he was the best striker in the world at Liverpool winning a trophy has more to do with the whole team.
Because he was a flop man use to miss sitter in the league all people talk is a one goal torres scored in ucl man was never the same player at liverpool from the most fraid striker to a big joke
@@tevincoley7970 stats merchant 🥱
Lol..that brother was a Genius 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Alexis Sanchez
I swear Balotelli was so bad it sometimes felt like Liverpool were playing with only 9 men on the pitch. Economically there might have been worse hits but he was one of the worst transfers at that point in time.
That really was the downfall of his career. Balotelli was relatively successful as City and showed decent form at Milan, but he really fell down a cliff following the Liverpool move. I remember when they went to QPR, he missed like two unbelievable sitters, one of which is the greatest miss I have ever seen live on TV.
@@hschsc1300 truth be told by the time he was at Milan he already was on a downward trend.
I remember the famous words spoken at the time by Ian Ayre I think it was calling him a "calculated gamble". It was a horrendous one. Goes to show if you don't plan in advance in the transfer market then you can end up paying for it afterward. Liverpool weren't prepared for life post Suarez at the time and it showed given we were fumbling our way from asking if any strikers were available before zeroing in on Balotelli.
Came pretty close to getting Loic Remy before Mario if not for the heart issue found on his medical but he wouldn't have been a good long term signing either.
Abyss as a Milan fan , he was pretty good for us and still showed his quality
Liverpool started his downfall
@@timothypeters6694 if he was pretty good for ya'll then why did Milan decide to sell him for a measly 16mil to Liverpool in that case? Granted he wasn't as bad as he was at Liverpool but he wasn't as good as he was at Man City either. Milan could smell our desperation at the time and ok'd the move.
Falcao to man utd is the worst transfer of all time
Ji Sung Park from United to QPR was a shocker from the king of club breakers Mark Hughes
Shevchenko would have performed much better if he’d gone to a team that plays actual football instead of Jurassic Jose’s long ball tactics
Mourinho’s first Chelsea team played very good football. They weren’t defensive
Craig has the same tension in his face as me every morning before my first coffee
What a player,
Balotelli
Scored 1 goal in a hole season 🤣🤣😭
Eric djemba- djemba has ta b up there
Morata to Chelsea from recent memory
Torres to Chelsea, too.
Utd and went to Chelsea and lost 5-0 not Arsenal. Sorry to be pedantic but one of the best days as a Chelsea fan.
While Shevchenko and Torres were awful signings by Chelsea, I'd argue that the signing of Robert Fleck was even worse. Chelsea had other top players that could compensate for the disappointment of those two, but all the eggs were in one basket with Fleck and boy was he woeful.
For the fee 18m for balo wasn’t that bad compared to others on the list imo
Jordan Wilson did you watch him play? I think he only scored 1 league goal... he was awful
Not mario he is one of the greater ones loved watching him
He was poor at Liverpool. Decent at city but that wasn't the transfer
Ali dia... graham souness’ most impressive feat🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Website is showing Drinkwater as 2nd worst.
Falcao?
MrMishal03 was a loan with little to no risk.
Phil Jones?
Bogarde was well known lol
Balotelli didnt even get enough playing time at liverpool, once again with the balotelli agenda.
Chelsea ruined so many players.
Shevchenko should've never went there.
@Andrew Chin it's a shitty plastic club and the premier league is overrated
Di maría?
his flop was not his fault. but none the less, a flop.
how is andy carroll still catfishing football fans to this day. balotelli had penatlies, free kicks, and was proven stiker just a bad spell at liverpool. andy carrol had hype from a partial season...XD and to this day is still irrelevant.
mfgoon7 coz Carroll is English ...he is still a prospect like Lingard
radamel falcao to chelsea😫
GODZILLAH LEGACY
Falcao in England overall
@@007Fusiion yep as u said he was awful at united but chelsea is the bigger fool they saw how bad he was and still sign him on loan plus pato lol
@@tevincoley7970 Signing someone on loan is not a flop but a very low and calculated risk. If the player doesn't work put he's gone.
Bogardo haha what a joke
Fernando Torres to Chelsea
Kesman was the unlikeliest striker ever in premier league.
Aquilani was a worse transfer than Mario and neither as bad as Konchesky...
Sanchez for me
Fernando Torrid
The f*ck is Torrid? Torres won trophies at Chelsea, something he didn’t do at Liverpool. Torres, scored a goal that’s worth the 50 million. Torres, got Chelsea to CL final. TORRES, won the Champions League... AND scored in the Europa league final.
Balotelli was terrible.
but no where NEAR as bad as andy carroll. balo had penatlies going for him carroll had nothing but hype.
mfgoon7 Ik Carroll had the price tag ab him but Marino’s attitude stinked. He weren’t a presence, he didn’t run, he stole penalties. He was a passenger. Carroll at least scored a coupla meaningful goals against City, Winner at Blackburn and in the semi final of the FA Cup Final against Everton.
@@siraajuddin736 bro he still catfishing fans to this day. balo had a terrible time at liverpool but that doesnt make him worse transfer than carroll who was there for 2 seasons and did nothing also, the most expensive player liverpool had bought 35M thats like 50M today market vs 16M balo hmmm given the same amount of time im sure they would been equal in output with more potential for balo with his talent and he still playing better than carroll.
Veron
Torres should be far higher
Hmm
Meh. He was not bad, bad. Torres showed some decent bouts of form and got them to a Champs League final. But for a player of his caliber with that amount of money, Jesus Christ.
@@hschsc1300 ramires took us to the final.. not torres
Clown
andy carroll* there i fixed your comment.
El haj diuf
Both Wright Phillips brother
Luke Shaw
How on earth is Luke Shaw a bad transfer? FFS, he is a first team regular
Adithya Prasad 2014. 30 mill world transfer fee for a teenager to go on an be average
Kyle but he is still playing regularly..
Alan Smith was the biggest flop.
Yeh all scapegoat....no one ever blame English players for anything.
