"Tropicalia" by Beck off of the album "Mutations"
Oh when they beat
Upon a broken guitar
And on the streets
They reek of tropical charms
The embassies lie in hideous shards
Where tourists snore and decay
When they dance in a reptile blaze
You wear a mask
An equatorial haze
Into the past
A colonial maze
Where there's no more confetti to throw
You wouldn't know what to say to yourself
Love is a poverty you couldn't sell
Misery waits in vague hotels
To be evicted
You're out of luck
You're singing funeral songs
To the studs
They're anabolic and bronze
They seem to strut
In their millennial fogs
'til they fall down and deflate
You wouldn't know what to say to yourself
Love is a poverty you couldn't sell
Misery waits in vague hotels
To be evicted
Oh and now you've had your fun
Under an air-conditioned sun
It's burned into your eyes
Leaves you plain and left behind
I see them rise and fall
Into the jaws of a pestilent love
You wouldn't know what to say to yourself
Love is a poverty you couldn't sell
Misery waits in vague hotels
To be a victim - เพลง
The sound of silence might be a more accurate headline.
i don't know how he does it. he is just, he is like the best
i could decay all day under the sun while listening to this song....
woaaa, LOVE this song!!!
Hey, remember the days before iTunes and other internet music stores? I sure do. I bought this album just.for.this.song. Can't say it was the best $17.99 I ever spent, but at least it's a good song.
It's a combination of sarcasm and love of Beck. I call him a generic person because he names Beck's four most popular songs as his best. Which makes me frown like a clown goin' down on the town
love this song
great influence of mutants ...
Brazilian music ... there's no better
Mutations is an album that i cannot imagine who can do it
the instrument in Beck's Tropicalia song that sounds like a straw being slid up and down in a drink cup is called a Cuíca. It works on the same principle. :-)
It was a single - released on 7" with Halo of Gold as the b-side and on CD with Halo of Gold and Black Balloon both as b-sides.
i like at the end when it meows
This song reminds me of the "schmusic" off of walk hard. "It's still not finished yet. I'm hearing... more Aboriginal percussionists. And I want an army of digeridoos. Fifty thousand digeridoos! "
Got some mad skills on the cuíca goin'.
I love Beck. I liked this song. Then I was flipping channels and saw it on "Sex And The City". Years and years later, I still can't hear the song the same :(
@herecomesthesun21287 yup i work there too its on one of the albums that was selling. I was called "in a bossa nova mood" i think it was selling around july ish well if you work at a franchise store and not a licensed store. It has some awesome new age bossa nova music on there this being one of them
one word GENIUS OH YEAH F CASTRO
I love that cuíca sound.
@fashionandmusic921 it is. it imitates the sound of the brazilian instrument the ciúca.
I love it ^^
And thats pretty much it, its called Cuica...
often used on brazilian sambas...
@punkguyrich no, i love every beck song, except probably for some songs on midnite vultures and the information... but no doubt, beck is my favorite artist ever
bellissima, davvero emozionante
Diamond Bollocks is the best song on this album IMO. I mean, if you count it as a part of it, which I do, because in the UK it was given it's own track listing.
You're almost dead on with the analogy! The instrument is a quica, or cuica. It operates in the same way, a cylindrical drum with a stick running through it. All you do is move the stick back and forth inside the drum and the friction vibrates the drum head.
the noise in the background sounds like a straw being slid up in down in a drink cup...lol
The sound I always thought sounds like a window being washed.
Would sound good if I could hear it(:????????
it's got that crusie ship feel to it.
mmm, i know what you mean, but mutations is an awesome album, i'll put it in second place, after mellow gold
mad ass beats
@nuevarine - hey thanks for that, always wondered what that instrument was called.
Haha I saw beck live recently and he played this song for a 12 year old kid who asked him to, except he couldnt remember more then the first verse.
Heartbreakers brought me here...
correction...I meant SIng it Again
@dasacker3000 Except the lyrics, which include "misery waiting in strange hotels to be evicted."
Reminds of Love - Wonder People
@PauloVinicius2111
Brazilian song? It's an homage to Os Mutantes (hence the name of the album) and others tropicalistos, but isn't it an original composition? It's got nothing to do with Caetano Veloso's song of the same name anyway...
@herecomesthesun21287 LOL =)
@sportsguy113 Hopefully your hotel won't be in Minnesota.
LOL In the playlist, "Missing" wasn't available!
Lol. I think it actually might be.
Brazilian song. In English. Nice... mas eu prefiro em português.
Where's the sound??
why is everyone calling the album mostly country, acoustic doesnt mean country
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
Ok Beck, I love your music. But this influence (in this song) is much more to "samba-rock" by Jorge Benjor than "Tropicália" (60's brazilian musical movement).
then Dead Melodies is 3rd, I think for me..
mfw i realized this was girl from ipanema. oh lawd
sounds like elevator music
This sucks.
