I've messed with this mod for a few days now, starting with the normal mod and then switching to the nightmare version. Everyone I watch sees it at least three times in a video, but it's only ever appeared three times across multiple days of playing. I'd go into a cave, hear all the noises and eventually ignore them because I never saw it's grin or heard its scream. It killed me once when I was trying to get diamonds, that is it.
It spawns in random spots just like other hostile mobs, and only one at a time. Were you in large caves and constantly on the move? If it's always on the other side of a wall or buried in an inaccessible cave room somewhere beneath you, then you'll just keep hearing the sounds without running into it.
I love this. Like everyone else said, you have the gutsiest approach, filled with chutzpah and moxie. Even when you die, you die like a gentleman! Screaming and fighting for your life with every fiber of your being! 😂
This is the second video I've seen about the Cave Dweller where its animations are broken and he just slides around all static-like except for the head, which still tracks you and everything. Given all the work the creator put into trying to make it so scary, even giving it a crouch mechanic and animation to follow you through tunnels its too fall to stand in, I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed. At least, at the time of this video anyway, not sure if its been sorted now or not.

I'm thinking about all the things I would of tried doing this. 1) get a potato or carrot from a zombie. 2) maka composter and sheer the vines in the mine shaft to grow food. 3) use string to make a rod and find water to fish. 4) use fishing rod a a weapon to drop mobs from high up or to pull closer into range of the light. 5) make a grinding stone to disenchant books out of the mineshaft to make enchanting table

I play with enhanced audio and ambience, from the fog herobrine mod, and the cave dweller mod all in one. Do not do this, I am beyond paranoid and my entire gameplay is revolving around avoiding the underground.
This thing needs the ability to tear a player's shield away, that actually trivialized what's supposed to be a cave horror and spoilt the fear factor a good bit. Not complaining at you at all Sneve, just saying, I didn't expect it to just be roadblocked by a shield like most mobs.
How is the monster even remotely terrifying? Endermen are creepier than that monster just sliding around in an idle pose like slenderman from the first game. At least Slenderman was creepy though.

Sneve just killed the cave dweller faster than anyone else, truly the coldest protagonist to exist within the depths, the toughest usurper of the darkness
Gameplay change I'd recommend: Instead of crafting an iron pickaxe, first craft a bucket for lava. Iron is good armor already, you can mine iron for that with a stone pickaxe. 1.) Lava is excellent emergency defense if you're retreating anyway 2.) It's the best furnace fuel you'll have access to until/unless you visit the nether. 3.) (best for last) One lava block can light a huge area so long as it has a path to flow down beside wherever you want lit. Mine channels along the center or sides of pathways you're exploring and have the lava flow down those to keep the whole path lit. This also serves as a barrier mobs need to cross to get to you, which anything other than a spider will try to resolve by walking the whole blasted way around it. Lava bucket accomplished, you can then make a fortified position by building a simple stone house lit by strategically placed lava. The safest option from here is to mine a staircase to the surface, leaving a channel to the side for lava to flow down without burning you and retreating back to base to slay zombies and such for wood as needed. The more cave-explory option remains open to you, but is also objectively the worse (and thus most entertaining) option.
Y'know, this just more or less feels like you played one of the old horror games with the requirements of spooky sounds, darkness, and a slightly scary monster, but adapted into minecraft and stuff.
I commend you on your bravery good sir Sneve! Seriously though, that was fun- and I mean I would not survive 1 minute in a cave without anything but it was oodles of fun watching someone else suffer- fun xD
