"I used to want to be a real man. I don't even know what that means." - wow! Jason's take on masculinity are so insightful. Very attuned man with a great interview by Ari.
I had not heard of Jason Isbell prior to this video but I find him to be a very decent, very open and honest sort of person who is committed to being himself, to being true to himself, which is another way of saying that he has integrity. I will definitely be checking out his music. And, as always, Ari, great job interviewing him. This is yet another reason you are one of my very favorites on MSNBC.
For those who don't like "country" -- well these are just great songs with brilliant lyrics and engaging melodies. I'd call it Americana in the truest sense of the word.
I knew nothing about him until a couple years ago. I found that he is arguably the greatest living songwriter. The Dylan of our age. He has a way with words that hit me straight in the gut. I find things in his song that go straight to things in my life.
I am a very distant cousin of Jason Isbell (eight cousin once removed). Not only is he a great musician, he is also a great person. I am proud to be related to him.
If your objective with Mavericks is to encourage musical exploration, you've achieved it with this episode. I'm a 70-year-old who grew up in Nashville. I always hated it and I always hated country music. As it's evolved I guess I'm evolving too. I plan to explore Mr. Isbell's music solely because of this presentation.
You owe it to yourself to explore a band called the Drive By Truckers. Isbell was in the early line-up of this band on and off. One of the greatest bands of all time IMO
I've been wanting to see him play live for a LONG time. Had no idea he plays in Nashville for 2 weeks every October. Guess where I'm going on vacation next year!
"But if the result you want is the work itself..." Jason's comment about valuing the process/practice over the result at 13:34 is so deep and hopeful. Wow.
Wow--what, a warm, deep, and engaging conversation with a thoughtful artist (and interviewer)! So many nuggets; especially liked, "It's the practice of it that's really important... but if the result that you want is the work itself, you don't have to get lucky at all; you can make that happen on your own" (Isbell)
Practice, practice, practice! As a person who grew up in Alabama in the 1950's, I applaud Jason's incredible journey, his honesty, and the work he's done. I always listen when Jason speaks. He does it so eloquently.
Great interview Ari! I am a long time fan of Jason's...ever since his Drive by Truckers days. I can't believe that his indie solo album Southeastern is already a decade old! All his records are great!
Jason Isbell has been my favorite songwriter now, for over a decade, before he became well known. He is the bar for me. He's also a man of immense integrity.
I don't remember how I first stumbled across Jason Isbell, but I do remember the first time I listened to Southeastern. It was so raw, emotionally, that I was absolutely gutted. Listened to it over and over and cried every time. There are very few songwriters I can say that about and I've been on this earth awhile. Also, it makes my heart warm to see him so happy and healthy. 🥰
I'd favorited a couple of Jason's songs on Spotify but really didn't know anything about the guy til now. Thank you for introducing me to such a remarkable, articulate, talented and thoughtful guy. Lyrics from "Boots of Spanish Leather" tattoo! OMG!! Great interview, Ari!
I stumbled on one of Jason’s songs a few years back I believe on iTunes and immediately bought everything he had written and recorded , I still do ,and always will with a sound bite or note not be necessary because I know if he wrote it I’ll love it …
"t's the PRACTICE of it that's really important. If we focus on the results, you have to do the work AND you have to get lucky. But if the result that you want is the practice itself, you don't have to get lucky at all. You can make that happen." One of the best quotes ever. Jason is figured stuff out.
I'm coming to this interview as someone who discovered Jason and Amanda about six months ago. I haven't listened to a lot of Isbell's work, but "If We Were Vampires" really hits me hard. Because it's about a longterm committed marriage. My husband and I just hit the 45-year mark this past summer. His lines in that song that I find *stunning* are "Maybe time running out is a gift/ I'll work hard til the end of my shift." Great discussion about norms for masculinity, how they're changing....
I love that he named Gillian Welch not once but twice for her songwriting. Gillian is an incredibly gifted songwriter and it's a shame she's not more well-known
I am so glad I took the time to watch this. I have notes for myself of people to look up and thoughts I didn't have before I listened to these two thoughtful men. Thank you!
Jason is one of the most talented living songwriters in America and you never hear his songs on the radio. It is pathetic how bad so much of the popular music being played on the radio is these days.
As a long term fan going back to his time in DBT, its great to read how many commenters are going to discover his music through this. I can listen to vampires on repeat and never tire of it
I had the same thought while reading thru the comments. I knew Jason was a special songwriter when I first heard Outfit years ago when he was with DBT. He's written so many great songs since but Vampires is incredibly emotional. I know I'm going to tear up every time but I still can't stop replaying it.
Where did this interview come from? Kinda shakes up our contemporary human condition, don't it. Ari takes all of us to a new, higher plateau, and sorta nourishes òur soul. Of course, his guests are the vital chord sharing rhythms and wisdom, visions, and concoctions.
Wow. That was fantastic. Jason is sharp. First time I saw him live by himself way back he really made an impression on me. I wish this man good luck and happiness always.
I never really knew about Jason Isbell, but (for some reason) decided to watch. He's a fascinating and inspiring person - both as a musician and as human being. Great interview!
I just started on my songwriting journey and I really appreciate Jason's words. Gonna keep staying true to myself and not worry about growing a fanbase.
Love this! thanks to Ari and the bookers of the show to have the amazing Jason isbell on. Brilliant! Oh, and PS Jason and Sheryl Crow's cover of "Everything is Broken" is possibly the best cover of a Dylan song to date. thanks again. x
I'm not a big fan of country, just because I wasn't raised with it. But I always liked Jason Isbell, ever since I saw him on Stephen Colbert's show. His lyrics are so smart and thoughtful, and his music sounds good to me even though it's country, I don't know why. Thanks for this great interview.
Found Isbell on an old Tiny Desk vid and this interview was presented next. 48 minutes?! I would like to thank Ari, Jason, Jason's family and his therapist. Honesty comes at a cost. But there will always be people who recognize it. Those who need honesty are like that child you're now responsible for. You owe it to them. I was well served by Ari and Jason in these 48 minutes.
I could have listened to this interview all day long!!! he has been a favorite since I first discovered his music. Best story teller ever!!!!! What is the name of his documentary?
Isbell is such a fantastic talent that gets deep into the core of things. To whatever extent he is underrated it's only because someone hasn't listened to him yet.
Phenomenal interviewer and interviewee. Thank you for letting me be within earshot of an interesting, honest, civilised and thought-provoking discourse. 👍
This was a very thoughtful, very well done interview. I didn’t want it to end. A master class discussion on song writing and the country music business.
Jason Isbell is one of the best storytellers in the music business. He’s an incredible guitarist and fantastic expressive singer and one of the best entertainers in the world today.
Glad to get a chance to watch… waiting for the verdict from the jury in the traitor. This seem like a perfect interview to listen to and get some joy of the world and the pain as Jason talks about. Thank you thank you.
He is one of my favorite lyricists ever, and he gets a lot of credit for it (the lyrics)...BUT... I need to point out (and I know many of his fans know this, but most ppl don't) is that he is one of the best gutarrists in all of Americana, rock, etc.
Huge fan, learned about him late (in 2017 or so) on Charlie Rose…”If we were vampires,” “speed trap town,” “last of my kind” are all classics in the Nashville tradition 👌🏼
A great songwriter and singer ( as is his spouse) and a stand up progressive not intimidated by the right wing . The same goes for the rest of his fellow ex- bandmates from the Drive By Truckers.
I love seeing Jason more front and center and that he's thriving and enjoying it. His work with Justin Townes Earle is some of my favorite of the modern era of music, not to mention his time with Drive By truckers. Cheers to many more years of this good soul making honest art.
I accidentally found Jason on a video with Todd Snider. Looked him up and the first song I heard was "If we were Vampires" and I was instantly hooked. What an amazing interview.
I've been a fan of Jason't music and his abilities as a lyricist for a long time. Hearing him speak openly makes me appreciate his honest approach to songwriting and his perception of the 'era of the bad faith argument'. Great interview.
Thank you for doing this, Arie; I learned a lot from it. I'm an amateur sing/song writer, but I haven't heard much of Jason. I sure will now. His nuanced perspective is quite instructive. Respect!
Great interview, Ari! I didn't know this young man, but wise beyond his years!! Loved his views on politics, what being a man is all about, counseling, etc. Great show!!
Stone cold legit artist. I read his lyrics and think, "There's no way he believes in deities." And then I read that he said, "I am not religious at all." That makes sense.
Well it’s clear that Jason Isbell knows who he is and he well deserves respect. ❤ His honesty, his self awareness and his clarity are mesmerizing. Listening to him talk is as worthwhile and rewarding as being absorbed in his songs…and that’s saying something! And never mind he was smart enough to marry Amanda Shires…👏👏 🤓 Man did he ever grow!👍 OMG l loved his lightning round…brilliant.
Loved segment September 12-23 on Swift effect on election w reach of 100million to cable news, 10million. Fun exchange of lyrical puns at end of segment w epic, classic Ari. Your guest’s knowledge of Swift’s lyrics impressed me. Great show.👏👏👏❤
Couldn't be happier that you've showcased this songwriting genius. I could have listened for another hour.
Loved the lightning round at the end.
"I used to want to be a real man. I don't even know what that means." - wow! Jason's take on masculinity are so insightful. Very attuned man with a great interview by Ari.
yea love the idea of “if youre wrong, listen and be willing to change : thats confidence”
one of my all time favorite lines, especially when you come to the same realization
His music is amazing -- and his live shows even more so. I've been to probably 7-8 live shows in multiple states. Always great.
For those who don't like "country" -- well these are just great songs with brilliant lyrics and engaging melodies. I'd call it Americana in the truest sense of the word.
His whole story is pretty amazing
Just wait until you hear his music. Prepare to be blown away! ❤
I knew nothing about him until a couple years ago. I found that he is arguably the greatest living songwriter. The Dylan of our age. He has a way with words that hit me straight in the gut. I find things in his song that go straight to things in my life.

I think mathematically everyone in America is 8th cousins lol
Jokes aside I’d brag about this, too
I am too!!
I’m my own grandpa.
We're all 8th cousins of each other

Start with Southeastern
@@DougEFresh-mj1xf thank you.
@@DougEFresh-mj1xf Certainly appreciated what you shared at the Bisquait Event. You are a blessing!!!
Listen to his song "King of Oklahoma" and also "Dress Blues", an amazing songwriter.

One of the greatest bands of all time IMO
This artist is one of the most BELOVED artists in NASHVILLE, such unbelievable talent. ❤ 😊

"But if the result you want is the work itself..." Jason's comment about valuing the process/practice over the result at 13:34 is so deep and hopeful. Wow.
This is artistic gold.

Never knew Jason Isbell but now I do. Seems like a cool person. Thanks Ari! Enjoyed this interview.
Jason Isbell has been my favorite songwriter now, for over a decade, before he became well known. He is the bar for me. He's also a man of immense integrity.
This guy wrote my favorite love song: If We Were Vampires. Look it up.
Yes! I was just singing that today, surprised to see him here…”Last of My Kind” and “Speed Trap Town” are also superb for any new listeners
They are all great!
Mine too
Thank you Arie for having this young man on! He is so grounded and considerate!🥰
Jason is one of the best. His songs have intelligent and thoughtful lyrics.
I don't remember how I first stumbled across Jason Isbell, but I do remember the first time I listened to Southeastern. It was so raw, emotionally, that I was absolutely gutted. I went to high school with Ari, and my boyfriend went to school with Jason. That’s my ‘cool story, bro.’
That's a cool story!
America's greatest artist IMHO.
Just an absolutely fascinating individual. Proud to count myself a member of his fan base.

Great comment. Congratulations!
I’ve loved Jason for sooo long thanks for this! I really admire his partner too 🌟
I doubt there's anyone bringing him coffee that's a better giitar player than Jason. He's so humble sometimes. He shreds.
Great interview with Jason. I discovered his music when he was with the Drive By Truckers. Outstanding guitar player and writer.

Enjoyable interview with Jason AKA Bill Smith, when the Killers of the Flower Moon movie releases in October..

There are also journalists who avoid being outspoken as well. That's not good. It's a disservice to the viewers.

Swift and Isbell are both regularly in my year end top 5s on Spotify; but goodness what a click baity title.
Right? I love her, but there's NOTHING about her here, and it's insulting to Jason to shoehorn her name into the title just for Swiftie clicks.
