Thanks for the videos. I have to say you're one of my favorite reviewers. I really enjoy that you do a more in depth videos covering features of the watches. I just upgraded myself from a Suunto Military ABC watch to a Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, and came across your channel while looking more in depth into my new watch. Thanks for the review and keep up the good work.
I've got an "old" Fenix 3HR. Speeds seems pretty accurate- nothing like you guys are seeing. But, then again, the Open Water Swim mode is junk on the F5+ too. I'll upgrade when they get all the bugs worked out of the new device. That said- every now and then on the F3HR- the altimeter goes totally wacko.
Did you use 3D-velocity in the settings of skiing app or did you deactivate it? Would be nice to see some testing regarding the difference. Should be a great difference
Hey, Des Fit, okay? Let me tell you, Garmin Brazil has closed its operations here in Brazil. Now it will be passed on to a distributor, but the Garmin Brazil website is no longer online Hugs..
Fenix 5 plus. I also run ski tracks on my phone. It shows max in the 40’s. Over all it does great with counting runs and distance. Only thing is those crazy speeds. I just counted I have 9 skis on the fenix and two days have the false readings. The last two years I used the vivoactive hr it work great
Great video as always man! Love the ski footage! Not sure how you came out unscathed. Lol. I would’ve def kissed bark trying to get a shot of the watch while on the downhill. Lol
Great video! Since I still have the fenix 5, I was wondering if there are any differences between the fenix 5 and the fenix 5 plus. Do you know any? Hope you will make a comparison video for the fenix 5 and fenix 5 plus! Anyway, Thanks a lot!
Another great video Des. Picked up the 5 plus and so far really liking it. Question: What ear buds were you using in this video? Have you paired them with the 5 plus? Seeing all the issues with pairing with the watch, I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on any replacement buds. (Watched your X4 review. Curious about the tarah pros. Keep it up.
These were the Tarah Pros and I really like them. Expensive, for sure, but they are darn good and yes, paired them with the F5Plus and haven’t seen any issues.
Hey Des. There is an app where you can download a data field showing your Strava Relative Effort. I tried asking Garmin how to use that but they deferred saying it's not their product. Makes sense. But, how can we best use this on a Garmin watch? Do we need some sort of Strava subscription? Could this be a quick video idea?
Do you have the mapping from the slopes on your watch? I have the Descent MK1 but can’t see them on the cycling map. OpenStreetMap seems to have them (It is sourced from there to my knowledge).
Mmmm, I tested this feature myself and ran ski tracks app on my phone at the same time. I got drastically different max speed, distance etc, I still need to work out which was most accurate, but the ski tracks app seemed to always report higher max speed and more distance skied!! And I mean a big difference, like a third more on ski tracks app. 😟
Hey man, what resort was this? Breck? Just got back from copper/wp/keystone, can confirm cold AF status. This definitely blows away the crummy trace app i use
I have the Fenix 5S. Has anyone had serious issues with battery life while tracking activity? I had a full battery and not even 15 minutes of skiing I had a 10% warning. I can't track longer than 20 minutes except when hiking. Maybe it's the cold?
Hi I have epic 2 and I see a lot of different numbers in calories..it is sawing less than I expected. For example 20 km of ski and you have 200calories ..
Awesome video's, I live in Woodstock Ontario Canada, I'm looking to track snowboard runs with my Fenix 6 pro and showcase on strava (android phone). I'm a runner and have a strava account that I track my runs, I'm an old school snowboarder and been out of the game for over a decade, sharpened my board with a tune up and ready to hit the hills for 3 days. Any advice on connecting to strava?
All you'll have to do is connect your Strava account in your Garmin Connect account under settings and then all your activities should sync over. Ride on!
@@DesFit Awesome, I'm connected through Garmin Connect to Strava, I get my runs pushing through to Strava, wasn't sure the snowboarding would push to Strava, thanks, I'll ride on!
@@DesFit I'm not sure that the Strava app inherently tracks ski/snowboarding like it does for running, hiking, walking, swimming and cycling. I thought maybe since you skied you may have synced or pushed an activity such as skiing on Strava.
Can Garmin do the opposite, measure up but discount the downs? That's what stairclimbers would want. Just did a Vertical Mile (www.vertmile.com/) a few weeks ago. Climbed up the stairs but then took the elevator down after each lap.
While the content is on point, I've gotta say - I'm most impressed with the video sections from your phone. So crispy!
Thanks! I’ve been more than pleased with the footage out of the XS Max.

I see you out here, repping peak 7! Loved the video by the way!
Thanks for doing a sport specific video (even if I don't ski).
Sure thing!

Wow, them trees in the middle of the pistè, that is old school!
great video, cant wait to go skiing again! Thanks for the insights. i will try the forerunner 945

Des I always get a crazy speed sometime throughout my ski days. Yesterday it gave me 95 mph and last week it said 137 max speed
Dang, you are a charger! :) Which device are you using?
Fenix 5 plus. I also run ski tracks on my phone. It shows max in the 40’s. Over all it does great with counting runs and distance. Only thing is those crazy speeds. Can the Garmin instinct do the same skiing functions? I just want a watch to use the ski features
Yup, it comes with the ski and snowboard profiles.
Thanks for your video..Is this the stock app on the watch it a third party one downloaded? Thank you
Hi Justin, this is just the stock Ski app.
@@DesFit great! How does it know when you're not skiing and on the chairlift? No movement and altitude increasing instead of decreasing? thank you
From my understanding it’s based on the altimeter. Either way, seemed to work well for me!
Where is this place cause it seems beautiful there
Breckenridge, CO
Great video as always man! Love the ski footage! Not sure how you came out unscathed. Lol. I would’ve def kissed bark trying to get a shot of the watch while on the downhill. Lol
Thanks Eric! I definitely chose the most wide open and less busy trails.
Thanks. Going snowboarding and this will be helpful. Cheers
Nice! Enjoy!
Will you do a full fēnix 5 plus review at some point?
Yup, at some point!

Would you leave it on auto pause while breaking? Eg having lunch
I typically don’t.
@@DesFit would you just end it, or manual pause?
I don’t do anything with it all day. I just end it at the end of my day. You can see how that looks on my latest activities in Strava.
Can you see you speed on the Garmin instinct too??

1:08. Judging by the enthusiasm here, ma boi went to Vail :D
Breck 🤙
Lines suck at Vail.

Thanks for the video! Great review! I'm thinking of getting one of these! Cheers! :)
Sure thing! Thanks!
Good bro ! Keep it up....awesome video ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thanks!
Finally a skiing video. I mean, you do live in Colorado after all. Hey Des, are the ski metrics the same on the lower end Garmins like the VA3?
I would also be very intersted in this, just waiting for my VA3 delivery myself.

Can this be used for indoor skiing on the Concept PM5 machine?
I’d use an indoor workout profile for that activity like Cardio
@@DesFit Thank you sir.

Great Info!
Glad it helped!
Hey mate I was wondering if you had a spare Fenix 5 that I could have or and Apple Watch or the instinct please it would be amazing love your vids
HAHAHAHA... A spare I could have? You off your rocker bro. That's a $700+ item! HAHAHAHA
I have the same Goggle smith IO/X.... 😊 😊

On the Fenix5 ski app is useless. the auto start doesn't work properly. Speeds are also way of, logged 103kph, I am not that fast.
I hit 214km/h on my Fenix 5x Plus the other day... as much as I know I was only doing 85km/h it was great for bragging to friends 😂
@@GarethDix you were bragging how messed up your gps data is?
Were you the guy that choked the mountain lion to death with your bare hands at horsetooth? Stay safe out there...
I was not, but I appreciate the concern!
DECAF lol
