The series deserves a comeback. Eternal Champions can easily become a great rival to Mortal Kombat.
Heck, EC did the martial art styles and "multiple fatalities per stage" before MK.
Fulgore2005 Honestly, this original IS the rival to the original MK. Wider array of fighting styles, more interesting characters, and far more delicious fatalities here. Only thing questionable today is that horrid CGI

5 Volt I still have my Genesis version, and it does have the fatalities. the only difference is less characters in the original as opposed to CftD on CD
Decapre Such different times it was for violent content back then. The MA-13 was pretty much the equivalent to M despite the "13". I'm glad my mom was smart about ratings even before the esrb because this game would have scarred me for life!
5 Volt whatttttt I'm glad my mom was totally unaware of the ratings system so I got to play this gem lol. I was only like 6 when the Genesis version came out and so glad I got to play it back then. same for mk1-umk3 on Genesis as well... although Mortal Kombat was only mediocre back then.

Yeah. The CD version was M. The genesis one which is significantly less gorey (but still somewhat for the time anyway) was T I believe.
The lady with the guns had me laughing my ass off in stream! I just didn't expect HER to be the one to get so violent. It was as if she suddenly went, "the SHIT I have to deal with for this job!" and just snaps.
That stage has another one where the car driving past has some gangsters lean out the window and riddle you with bullets.

Eternal Champions: "Laughs in Sega"
This series should have lasted much longer than it did. SEGA America produced Eternal Champions but SEGA Japan weren't too happy to keep it around. Apparently, SEGA Japan felt it was going to over-shadow their Virtua Fighter series and as a result SEGA Japan decided to shut down the Eternal Champions IP entirely, making Virtua Fighter the main focus.
It's a damn shame. A new Eternal Champions game for today's current market would be incredibly welcomed. Someone needs to convince SEGA to bring this series back somehow.
I think being it being a Sega exclusive and no arcade release dealt it as big a blow as the VF 'favorite child' treatment.
Actually its quit simple why it didn't last long in Japan, the game is to violent. In Japan violence is seen the same way as sexyness is seen in the west, nearly a taboo.
DiGi Valentine the problem was that Nintendo kept coming out with games and Sega kept coming out with systems if they could have figured out a way to incorporate the Sega CD and the X32 and maybe what the Saturn was trying to become all-in-one system it would have stomped everything else. I don't know why they didn't just come out with a system that you could play everything in CDs cartridges just make it one unit.
I find that ironic considering SEGA hasn't released a new Virtua Fighter for I think 8 years now.

Willing to bet the artists that worked on this game also did a lot of those old point and click adventure games on Amiga & PC. The deaths in those games were brutal as hell, and with some fantastic pixel art to boot.

Yep, all the point and click games made by Horror Soft had super brutal deaths, Waxworks chief amongst them, with the zombie death.

Yup. At least. The irony is that SEGA was trying to out "over the top" MK for some of that sweet, sweet MK pie but became mostly ignored and niche due to the fighting game glut and I don't think SEGA made a version for the arcades, so sadly a lot of people missed out on one of the more responsive and combo heavy "also-rans" amongst the fighting games of that generation.

Last time I was this early, I was seeing Eternal Champions ads in game magazines.
MagusX 84 so true it was on every other page! also they advertised it with the activator or whatever that octagon controller was that you stand inside and punch and kick. Still I never played it...

The Eternal Champion and Dark Champion deserve Boss Rages. Fight the final boss up to 7 times.
With the major problem being you only get one shot or you get the bad ending and have to restart.

This game's actually pretty damn good, especially for the time. Unfortunately, Sega decided they wanted to focus on Virtua Fighter instead of Eternal Champions. The alchemist Xavier was my personal favorite.
Oh, and everyone has classic style personal fatalities as well. I think this game calls them "Vendetta moves".

This is why I love these guys. They present a video game I may or may have heard of and play with enthusiasm and complete fuckin mayhem.
This series needs to comeback and arc system works collaboration with it's original creators would be a wet dream come true.
Normally fighting games don't have good storyline. But I always loved Eternal Champions'. All fighters are dead and you fight to get your life back. I think the whole concept was brilliant and unique plus the fact that all the characters come from different era was very a nice touch. They really need to make a sequel and with the engine's power we have now, they can do something awesome.
It had a British comic series that expanded on it but it was super short lived. There was gonna be a whole franchise including tons of spin off games, a Saturday morning cartoon, a movie, toys, and a part 3 on the Sega Saturn that never happened because Japan didn't want it competing with Virtua Fighter. Now Sega of Japan is hurting for IPs and is finally bringing it back!!!
I highly recommend you guys get a GameFAQs and try to view all of the cinikills, fatalities, and stage fatalities. There's a TON of secret shit in Eternal Champions on the SegaCD. If you like fighting games that are just packed with a ton of secret stuff, I also recommend Way of the Warrior on 3D0!

Eternal Champions, Primal Rage and Street Fighter 2 and Fatal Fury were my childhood. I remember staying up late as a kid with my dad playing VS matches. it was some of the best time I ever spent gaming. My Dad always played Larcen and I always picked R.A.X.
My Dad would have been so stoked with how far fighting games have come.

I remember when I was about 9 I begged my Mom for this game as a birthday gift and she got it for me. Was/is my favorite fighting game to this day. Awesome video!
Brilliant! This is one of my favourite games of all time and I love seeing people react to how messed up the fatalities are.
This was my first fighting game, and the 2nd game I ever played. My dad would destroy me with the guy with the trident hand and I always played the caveman.
This was a lot of fun to watch, hope you doods play this again sometime :)
Playing this game in my youth gave me nightmares but today it's entertaining as hell! Only managed to stumble on the stage fatalities by mistake and when I tried to do them on purpose I never could get them.
funny how some people insist that EC sucks and is just another MK ripoff... i think they were talking about the Genesis original tho, which was kinda hard to play and had a ball-bustingly unfair AI.
now i never tried the Sega CD version, but it does seem to be the Ultimate MK3 to the Genesis' vanilla MK3, albeit with far more realistic pixelated gore (which makes me wonder why it wasn't so successful, considering 90s gaming kids were nuts about gory games).
Andrey Kusanagi We were really proud of the SEGA CD version...thing was the platform was dead when the game came out so, yes, many more people played and know of the Genesis rather than the CD version.
Well it's just like the game Skitchin' immediately people were saying oh it's just a such and such clone and never took the time to play and appreciate the game.
Eternal Champions was a hard game to play, and maybe that's what put people off. But once you get the combos down pat/learn the deep move list you can do some crazy things.
The major problem was that almost no one bought the Sega CD, so there was no market for this version.

Better controls then MK (at that time), cooler then street fighter
It came out as a sega exclusive around the same time as MK for the genesis first. I remember getting it and playing it when I needed a break from it every once in a while.
It was supposed to be worse. A lot worse. SEGA was trying to out "MK" MK. It was your typical money grab that turned out to be made by some very creative, passionate, and very good, Street Fighter fans.

DUDE eternal champions on Genesis / CD was my favorite fighter of the time (along with sf2). so hyped to see Max play it. it's absolutely hard as balls and totally unforgiving, but it has a charm that I can't quite place my finger in that is unmatched by any fighter of the 16 bit era.

I didn't play B.A.T very much, but I remember it being pretty good on Saturn. such a shame Sega ran themselves into the ground... so many great consoles.
It's broken as hell but pretty unique. There's no other fighter like it.

tha problem for some tho is that WeaponLord isn't a normal 'pick-up-n-play' fighter, you actually had 2 learn tha mechanics of it to fully get tha most out of playin' it [i believe it was tha 1st fighter to have a parry system], & maaaan, was it ever worth it. it's still tha only fighter i kno whose fatality system is pretty much free-ranged, where u were allow'd to do more than just 1 linear thing to tha opponent for their death. also, when you think about it, with tha way tha fatality system is, it had brutalities [going by how you have to perform/activate'em in MKX by doin' certain moves while an opponent's near death] before brutalities existed. WeaponLord's a fighter that was truly ahead of its time.

Although this is the Sega CD version, I remember back in the day’s, when this game was a big hit on the “Sega Genesis”. Even 7-Eleven was promoting this game for a little while by putting Slurpee-cup’s with characters from this game.

If there's one thing you can say about the Sega CD version of Eternal Champions, it's that it took Mortal Kombat 14 fucking years to match it in the gore department.
