Graffiti in New York wasn't as popular for some reason in the mid 90's. Graffiti was more popular in the mid to late 80's I believe. Still it was special that these MC's from NJ put graffiti on the map.
All this talk about when and where graffiti started has and is proved moot. I believe that graffiti "AS WE KNOW IT", not a lot of people use that phrase and it's very very important to do so bit graffiti as we know it appeared here in Newark, NJ earlier than it did in The Bronx. I do need KRS to supply me with one more variable, what year does he believe it started in The Bronx? Chances are very, very favorable to Newark graffiti being older than the answer he will give. I know the artist personally, have spoken to two random people walking by that witnessed him painting, his friend was with him for a third witness and the most important factor, the wall still exists and the actual piece is still running! Two of my mentors were real graffiti professors and really loved studying the history of what we love. That is how I started getting into it. 99.9% of writers don't really care and neither did I for a while. So that's why I say I believe this not because of the fact I live in Newark but have the evidence to back up what I believe and KRS-One is such a huge fanboy of that terribly smelly and crumbling borough that it's either laughable or actually sad. Either way, he just lives The Bronx so much that you just laugh when he claims graffiti started there because you know he would probably too make a claim that when modern humans first started to migrate out of Africa, The Bronx is the next place they stopped at and we continued to evolve from there. Smh Anyone know if he stayed a date for his believe, please let me know. Thanks Zew1 FR/OUT/SGK/666 Chadwick Ave, Newark Brick City all city, all day! Peace Boomskwad, Tame & Sensei
"If it doesn't have letters, it's not graffiti". -Mike Giant So that brings up multiple important points. And depending if you believe that or not depends on what someone would consider "graffiti" because that is a VERY broad term and it's meaning depends on who you're asking, what do they consider graffiti and then you can ask where and when do they believe graffiti started. But since graffiti has never been categorized and the meaning of the word being so subjective, I really do not think ANYONE can claim to where and when it started definitively. So if you believe that graffiti has to have words, then maybe you will consider it dating back to ancient Greece and Rome where people would paint walls (with words now remember lol) to protest the government or religious and social matters. And if you think that no, graffiti doesn't need to say something for it to be considered graffiti, then you gotta go back to ancient cave paintings by Neanderthals 64,000 years ago, before modern humans evolved. So if you disagree with Giant then graffiti was around BEFORE US! That actually hit me hard when I first thought about it. Graffiti is older than Homo Sapiens as a species...just think about that! But Homo Sapiens did continue the cave painting of course and it is almost universally considered the birth of Art itself. I do consider it too to be art because that is truly what separates us from animals. Art is not something we actually need to survive after all. But think about those last few sentences I typed and did you realize that I just answered, unequivocally, you cannot argue the fact in any way shape or form, besides death and taxes the most definitive answer to a old question that people thought the answer was in the eye of the beholder, when it actually isn't. There is no other answer to this question except for one. IS GRAFFITI CONSIDERED ART? So you think KRS realized just how far down the rabbit hole you can go by taking his statement at face value? I am guessing he didn't because contrary to popular believe, the man is nowhere near as smart as he or anyone else thinks he actually is. That hip hop ego that is a must took a big roll on him. When I see some of his "famous quotes" I just smh. I hear statement which magnitudes higher truth in them from the old drunks at the bar I worked at as a kid. He says some silly things, does not and can not back it up with evidence or facts and when asked to do so the ego kicks in again and he plays that card by basically blowing it off and thinking he's too good, too smart to have to provide evidence. He's so smart that we should all just believe all the dumb shit he says. It's been a highly obvious example of "misinformation" since he first started. But is it really missinformation if the person saying it really believes it??? Lol I'll stop, my views and everything I wrote can just keep bringing up more questions. I hope graffiti is never categorized. I live having those heated, drunkest debates never ever stop! What fun is it to have drunk talks and not being able to start yelling at each other? KRS will never in his life realize that he his view on where "modern graffiti"? Started. What is it to be considered modern graffiti? That's one category that's ever brought up but the answers, just like depends on if you believe graffiti has to have letters or not in it, Brings up more finer and finer questions and it is AND ALWAYS BE AMD COME DOWN TO WHAT YOU BELIEVE. So ask yourself those questions and we can keep breaking it down until we get to the universal question Is Graffiti Considered Art? And we ultimately answer that question in the process. But it messes with the very definition of graffiti. You can go on for days because every answer you give always brings up an even more important questions. ANYWAY..... Just give me a year KRS and quickly clarify that you actually do mean graffiti as we know it and not just vandalizing a wall with some squiggly lines in crayon. Writers with Tag names and using spray paint and markers to Tag our names. No random, pointless vandalization. That's all I need KRS for and then after I get that variable from him and just a quick 100% YES it's modern graffiti where Taggers go out and paint their names for respect and shit talking rewards, and we all will be able to prove or disprove my theory or his theory. And after that is answered, you still have the Cornbread beliefs out there, so get back to work, this is never going to stop! Holy shit I've been typing for 30 minutes! WTF is wrong me!? Seems I got carried away. So to whoever reads this...cheers 🥂 Zew1 FR/OUT/SGK/666 Newark, NJ Brick City all city, all day, we never close, a 24 hour operation!
