Austin Powers' look is part of the comedy. The cringe and teeth were perfectly acceptable in London in the 60's. This movie is just good fun.

@Anonymous One its also a parody of the beatles being sex symbols of their time and not for their looks. the austin powers intro is based on the start of A Hard Day’s Night. and the hairy chest is a reference to sean connery wearing a chest hair toupee for his role as james bond.

A glorious mash up of the Bond movies and TV’s The Avengers. Liz Hurley’s role being an homage to Diana Rigg’s Mrs Emma Peel. Rigg perhaps better known these days for playing Olenna Tyrell in Game Of Thrones.

Every time you said, "Why would they..." or "Why would he..." -- the answer is "Because it's a joke." It's a comedy, and ridiculous, silly things happen because its all humor. I find it extremely common that when young folks react to comedy films, they are always confused by the comedy, and always wonder why a character would behave in the way they do, and no one seems to be able to understand that they behave silly or dumb because the film is a comedy. That's how they work.

My favorite call-back bit is the ringtone of the final phone call. It's the ringtone of the Presidential hotline from the 1966 Bond spoof "Our Man Flint", starring James Coburn as retired super spy Derek Flint, who is ridiculously skilled and knowledgeable about everything.
Dean Martin starred in a series of 1960s spy spoofs as Matt Helm. They leaned hard into the sexy side of the genre; the theme song for the "Silencers" movie explained that women with a bust measurement of 38 were "Silencers". Martin hated doing the movies, thought they were stupid. But the money was too good to refuse.

This was a parody of the 60's spy movies. Sean Connery as James Bond which in turn spawned Dean Martin as Matt Helm and James Coburn as Derek Flint. All those leading men were also portrayed as Irresistable to women. Also the 60's Spy Craze gave us TV's Man from U.N.C.L.E., I Spy, Mission Impossible and even Mel' Brook's Get Smart.

Much of this movie is a spoof of tropes from James Bond and other spy movies. Austin’s velvet suit with ruffled sleeves is very much like an outfit Bond wore in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Dr. Evil is a combination of the Bond villains Dr. No and Blofeld (also referred to as Number One). Random Task is a direct reference to the villainous henchman Odd Job. Alotta Fachina is a parody of the character Plenty O’Toole from the movie Diamonds Are Forever. Austin’s look is based on The Beatles, who were major sex symbols back during the 1960’s.
The movie is pretty darn funny even when you don’t understand the references. But it’s ten times funnier when you do.

28:35 "The Modern Era..." of over 20 years ago...
Laughed my ass off when I watched this in a discount theater with my wife shortly after release. We walked in at the jumbo plane scene and watched the movie twice. (BTW, I was hired by my employer [still with them] to work the Flight Management System computers for the 747-400 in 1987, so the jumbo is nostalgic.) You really do need to have consumed the pre-1990s Bond films to TRULY appreciate this film. You won't regret watching them either. Even Moon Raker (kinda stupid) isn't bad. Jaws (character, not film) saves that movie.

Alot of the stuff makes fun of very old Bond movies.
Where they would sit at a table like this and had button to assasinate them. The evil guy was not really showed only him patting his cat. And he was called number one, and the number two was called that..
In one movie there was a guy name "oddjob" he threw his hat and decapitated a statue as a show of force. He looks very much like the same guy from here.
Also alot of the evil lair stuff etc comes from there, always tiny corridors. Turning around in them would be hard.. The name of the female's are rather suggestive, so they make fun of that too ofc.

Holy shit I thought the disclaimer message was just a joke. I can't believe it was actually needed

oh there's absolutely no sexual appeal to be found in Austin Powers, hence the joke of him being so overwhelmingly irresistible to women

There is no appeal at all in this character for myself, just speaking for myself, of course. I have not seen this movie, but I very much enjoyed your reactions and comments.

Austin Powers parodies both James Bond & The Avengers. The idea of a gentleman agent partnered with a sexy female assistant/fellow agent comes from the Avengers. The Avengers ala the 1960s to 70s British spy/adventure drama.

A lot of the comedy in these movies is poking fun at early spy flicks, like the Connery run of James Bond. Alotta Fagina is a reference to the very real character from 1964's James Bond: Goldfinger called Pussy Galore, for instance.

Per usual, wonderful intellectual reaction. However, I have one complaint. Stargate was an amazing series, but, the greatest series wrapped up by a movie is "Firefly" followed by "Serenity". The chemistry between the cast and the writing by Joss Whedon as you say "In my opinion" is hands down #1. Would love to see you review it. It only had 14 episodes before Fox killed something perfect. It is also the only time in history a major motion picture was completely driven by the fans and their love for the show. Let's just say we needed answers. Much love and keep on keep it on J.

I think he’s supposed to be appealing in the 1960’s British club scene way 😂

The entire film is a parody of that type of British spy flick. Austin Powers is a caracature of the "smooth" spy who has a way with the ladies, and Dr. Evil is a caricature of ot that type of villain' The idea of Austin, who is physically groteque, arrogant, and sexist fancies himself a sexy ladies'' man and somehow gets people to fall for it is at the heart of the absurdist premise. Nome of it is to be taken seriously. Meanwhile, they pepper the film with inside jokes, particularly by sprinkling in words in Yiddish, which have meanings that are comedic in tontext. For example, the henchwoman's name is "Frau Farbissanah." Farbissina means a sort of mean, dour, sourface, so it's perfect for her character and makes people who know the word crack right up. Seth Green as Scott is the perfect counterpart - a sort of realistic portrayal (maybe a bit broad) or a teen of that time, existing in this world of total over the top stereotypes of characters.
