White British atheist here , I can’t help think this “ British values “ thing is knee jerk nonsense that no one has stopped to scrutinise as to what this actually means , the only things anyone is bound to do in Britain is adhere to the law , here are some stereotypical British values or cultural norms,
    Drinking tea
    Watching football
    Eating fish and chips
    Flying the union flag
    Morris dancing
    Going to the pub
    Going to Spain on holiday
    Complaining about the weather
Complaint about bloody foreigners while driving a foreign car and eating Chinese or Indian food
Seriously why does it matter , but more importantly has anyone really thought about what this means

I'm an ex serviceman and I have served with 1 Muslim British soldier in my whole 11 years, it made me think how many we have. Muslims demographically are the lowest represented statistic in the british Isles. My good friend, from Pakistani descent who served with me was if anything more British then me, but his family weren't happy. We deployed to afghan, he hid he spoke pashtun to avoid judgement from us non Muslim British soldiers, but I saw him and told him its a benefit and amazing. He helped with many talks with locals after that. But when he left, I looked to see how many others we have. Less then 200. Over 4 million Muslims in a population of around 70 million, but having 200 personal in a force of 80,000. You can do you mate. In the 90s we had the Bradford riots where Muslims ransacked a town even though most weren't even from Bradford. Police literally watched Asian males going up the m1 to take part. But who ended it all..... the Muslim elders, the originally Pakistani and Bangladeshi born members who were grateful for the acceptance they received while the British born New generation raged against it in the name of their fathers/grandfather's nations. Especially after the 7/7 bombings, the Muslim community needs to close ranks and eradicate the bad apples. Otherwise the racism and xenophobia will always have a grip

Mildly amusing to see Mr Farage described as closed-minded in other comments, when Islam is entirely closed-minded based on the contents of a book written by humans about 1,600 years ago.

Not even close to being equivalent. Farage bangs on about British values which i would imagine includes freedom of thought and expression yet wants to ban certain freedoms. Which not only makes him close-minded based on his own principles but also a hypocrite.
Islam never claimed to be tolerant of everything. However Islam allows for legal pluralism. Eg Christians and Jews under Islam will have some level of autonomy.

On what basis is your reasoning? Are you referring to Muslim Majority countries where ppl are oppressed? First off, this isn't the case for all Muslim countries but if you havent noticed, many of the leaders of these countries don't judt oppress non Muslims, they also oppress Muslims. None of this has anything to do with Islam which explicitly forbids an Islamic government from oppressing both Muslims and non Muslims. In case you havent noticed, Islam is the only religion that explicitly goes out of its way to protect non Muslim minorities that live in an Islamic state. I encourage you to read the Qur'an, Sahih hadith, and the commentary of trustworthy scholars who tell you the extensive rights Non Muslims have in Islamic states.

    • @Indijana
      @Indijana 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the reason the above person reacted that way is because we already know that a lot of people are against "organised" religion, specifically from the west because don't have any type of belief. It's your prerogative to hold that belief, but the problem is that such beliefs have often times been informed by the western propaganda, specifically against Islam since that's the religion we're talking about here. Propaganda which doesn't show a thing about Islam, except for some wordings that have been completely taken out of context and given different meanings like "jihad". Basically, we're fed up with it. We have to right to uphold our beliefs, just like you have with yours, and to practice it in an obviously non-threatening way (values which Islam upholds anyway, to approach everything with humility, kindness and peace). You can understand people's frustration when politicians and regular people completely twist it around, not actually understanding even 1 percent of it.

Wow! You do not understand Jesus at all! Are you an Islamic Pharisee?
In Matthew 9:10-17, Jesus is eating dinner at Matthew's house when many sinners and tax collectors join Him and His disciples. When the Pharisees see this, they ask Jesus' disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" . Jesus responds, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance".
In Jesus’ day, rabbis and other spiritual leaders enjoyed widespread respect and were held in high esteem in Jewish society. Almost everyone looked up to the Pharisees. *They were strict adherents to the Law, they were the guardians of tradition, and they were the exemplars of piety. In their vaulted position, they avoided those whom they deemed “sinners”-those who did not follow their system of rules.* Pharisees and the other religious class of Jesus’ day would definitely not have socialized with tax collectors, who were infamous for embezzlement and their cooperation with the hated Romans.
*@IamIAMFATHERSON, don't the Pharisees sound like muslims?*
Jesus chose to eat with sinners because they needed to know that repentance and forgiveness were available. As Jesus’ ministry grew, so did His popularity among the social outcasts of society.
Christians welcome everyone to Church. About 2 months ago, a young guy came to Church. His clothes smelled of weed. Some of the men in our Church bought him breakfast & coffee in our breakfast room and talked to him. They invited him to their Bible Study and he continued coming to Church where He learned that Jesus came to earth not for "perfect people" but for us sinners. Last week this young man came to Church and was baptized and gave his testimony about how he was saved by Jesus Christ, both spiritually and in his life since he stopped smoking pot, got a job, and has made friends with other great Christian friends.
*This is what Jesus does. He saves sinning people to Himself for all eternity.*

In a word, Optimism. It's more than just a philosophy; it’s a mode of culture entirely different from the mode of culture represented by the culture of traditional Islam and others like it. It's based on the assumption of the fallibility of all ideas, which leads to the mutual critique of ideas within Western societies, and thereby fosters progress towards a less erroneous and more knowledgeable state. This is in contrast to the traditional Islamic assumption of the absolute truth of ideas, which leads to the authoritarian imposition of those ideas on a population trained to defer to them, which in turn leads to nothing but the entrenchment of errors and stifles the growth of knowledge. This is why Western societies are powerful and the old Islamic empire has fallen behind. I don't think it has to be this way, though. I think the Optimistic mode of culture that characterises the West is perfectly compatible with Islam, just not its current authoritarian and regressive form. A Reformation is in order...

Other men do. Because it is by design that men become jelious. But under the umbrella of “freedom” women dress what they want. Half naked. How is the outcome?? 52% divorce. If you are ok with that then keep it to yourself. Why do you have to impose it on others.

They have a hypersexualised society and encourage it in children. They have lost their work ethic, they are more entitled and selfish. They don't care about the community or neighbours. It is good to see that at least one person in the Islamic community is willing to engage in some actual thinking at some point.
I think it best to address your point about democracy first, after which I will be able to address your other questions.
Firstly, I disagree with your assumptions about the nature of democracy. Your view is indeed the prevailing conception, but I do not subscribe to it. My view of democracy is that of Karl Popper, who argued that democracy is not about the ‘rule of the people’ at all, but is rather a process for detecting and correcting errors. It is the political analogue of the process of forming and testing theories in science. In scientific enquiry, theories are created and are then subject to critique in the form of arguments and experiments designed to reveal the errors in those theories so that they can be abandoned, leaving only the currently most robust ideas still standing, at least until newer and even more robust theories are created. It is in this way that progress is brought about in science. Democracy is similar to this, only it is not a process of enquiring about what is true of the physical world, as in science, but rather it is a process of enquiring about what political policies are best to implement in society, at least for now. The political analogue of the theories in science are the political parties and their policies. The political analogue of the refuting arguments and experiments in science are the periodic elections that are held in which the people basically answer the question of whether the party in power and its policies have improved things for them or not. If a sufficient number vote against the ruling party, then that party is removed without violence and subsequently replaced by the opposition and their policies, who are unlikely to want to replicate what the election has shown to be the errors of their predecessors, and the whole process is reiterated. It is in this way that progress is brought about in politics. To be explicit, democracy, conceived in this way, is not about producing the ‘correct’ political policies, but rather it is a process that assumes that there simply aren’t any policies that are free from error in this way. All policies are fallible, and democracy is a process for detecting and correcting those errors without the need to resort to violence. I noted that you are “thankful” for this property of democracy, which, far from being a “fable”, is alive and well in Britain and all other ‘Western’ societies all over the world.
Which brings me to my second point. When I use the term ‘West’, I do not mean it in a geographical sense, but rather as a term to refer to all of those societies that embrace this error correcting characteristic. Examples would include modern Japan and India, which are obviously not part of the Western hemisphere. Any society that acknowledges its own fallibility and then begins to try to detect and correct its errors, and thereby causes progress within itself, is a progressive and dynamic society. Any society that rejects its own fallibility, and instead proclaims its foundational ideas to be free of error, will see any possible changes to its ideas as being deviations from what it sees as the ‘Truth’ with an upper case ‘T’, and so will regard such changes as being a degradation. Such societies are static, and necessarily authoritarian. For most of human history, societies have been of this static kind. It has only been since the Enlightenment a few centuries ago that the new dynamic kind of societies have begun to emerge. Islam, in its current form, is one of these static societies. But as I have stated, I do not think that this will necessarily always be the case. I think it possible for an understanding of Islam to emerge that is concordant with the principles of the kind of dynamic societies that I have described. I think it is possible that a form of Islam could emerge that embraces progress, not just of the scientific and democratic kind I have described, but progress of all kinds, be it philosophical, ethical, technological, artistic, or any of the other kinds of progress taking place within Western societies all over the world today.
