This was some really nice sleuthing Russ. Nothing worse than getting chased away by three men with wrenches lol. The rock cut is quite impressive. The preserved stone entry way for the housing is fantastic! Fantastic editing by Kaitlin. Take care.
Thanks Kevin.......as you know, sometimes "guessing out loud" remedies alot! Yes- without Kaitlin my efforts would forever be on a teeny tiny little SD card inside a Go-Pro camera! Happy Weekend!
Loved this. I'm in Salt Point close to where the Pok and Eastern line passed through. I wish your video had made it north of Red Fox Rd. FYI - There is a tall (~20 feet) stone abutment in amazing condition in Salt Point. It's where a line crossed The Little Wappingers Creek. It's back in the woods a ways but accessible. No issues walking back to it. Using the info you provide I believe it would have been the Pokeepsie & Conn line.
@@lostrailbeds8289 Yes. To access you can park at the firehouse on Cottage St in Salt Point. From there you can walk through the field behind the firehouse on the north end following the Little Wappingers Creek. Continue into a 2nd flat field further back that has the creek running along side. At the far south east corner of that 2nd field and into the woods just a little bit you'll find the abutments. The look undisturbed to me. If you go in hunting season be careful! Hunters have blinds not far from the abutments. If you let me know when you're going I could meet you there. My house is close to the firehouse. p.s. Just watched the video of Upton Lake to Stanfordville. Ended up looking into Germond farm Holy cow.
Great stuff Russ! Until 2019 I had a bunch of customers in Poughkeepsie. I used to see the old railbeds and wonder about them. I didn't know there was a Poughkeepsie & Connecticut. Thanks for filling in some blanks for me. And I very happy/surprised there's now a trail on the Hospital Branch. I have to get back there and take a walk.
Poughkeepsie and eastern, Poughkeepsie, Connecticut, the story of two lines. I was glad to see the stonework toward the end of the video. Good effort on the part of the developer; not quite as beautiful as the original structures, but beautiful in their own way.
Great video! I just want to let you know that I researched this area about 15 years ago. You are dead on with your information- nice to see someone with similar interests. Also I currently work for a company that owns part of the station area on Smith St. (One of our buildings is in your pictures). I also worked at the manufactured housing area you show. I am very familiar with those two sets of track beds, very interesting. THANKS,
I recall the Smith St yard- there was a siding for the EFCO plant and the Poughkeepsie Journal used to get rolls of newsprint delivered by boxcar on that platform as I recall. In 1980 I worked at Blocksom and company and we had boxcars deliver to the plant as well as tank cars of chemicals. I think that was on the hospital branch that went behind Western Printing and served that plant as well. I had friends that worked at WP and they both said how boxcars would be switched indoors at the plant. I do recall when the Maybrook line was torn out in 1981 or 82 and there was a half-assed plan to turn the railbed into a road.
YES! There was still quite a bit of rail service in the city back then. I'm trying my darndest to document stuff as it disappears right behind my camera! Thanks!!
I can't tell you how many times I have ridden the rail trail around Morgan Lake, the cemetery and the Fallkill and stopped to try to figure out what had been there. You answered a lot of questions for me in this video (and I thought the mausoleums were railroad ruins too). Thank you.
Thank YOU!! Sometimes I know pretty much "what things were, and where things were, etc" Sometimes my wandering and guessing out loud figure it out! Haha!
Hey you missed a cool piece of the rail road. It’s in Ennis Parc. A mobile home park on Rt 44, left hand side before you get to the gas station by Timothy heights. If you follow either entrance into the park around you will see it on the corner of pheasant run. There is a date on it as well. lived there when I was a kid. Used to climb on it. Always wondered what exactly it was there for and used for.
YES!! I delivered Kerosene to a TON of the Mobile Homes at Ennis Parc.......I've known about that concrete abutment for a long time. There are also a few small culverts along Bower Rd. that I didn't include. Thanks for the info...and thanks for watching!!
@@lostrailbeds8289 I’ve always wondering where it went to since it was facing an odd way to be pv to Poughkeepsie. Was It just a branch off to somewhere?
@@hondamxbmx692 It was the main line......P&E ran from Parker Avenue in Pok. all the way out to Millerton and then to State Line and out through Ct . It became Central New England RR.
Based on a comparison of the 1893 and 1943 USGS Poughkeepsie quadrangles, the original alignment appears to have been slightly north of the final alignment in the area of Fall Kill Creek... so the stone abutment at 28:10 just might be from the original route.
There are two rail beds by my house that nobody seems to give two shits about, if you’re interested, I would be able to provide a bunch of information. I live in South Schuylkill county by the way

@burtongs Well I'll have to go explore a bit more. It must be beyond the gravel bank and before it crosses Scout Rd?

The Hospital Branch only goes up to the boundary of the old State Hospital....they're still tearing buildings down up there. Thank You!!
Greatly enjoyed this video and your history narrative. Thanks!
You are welcome. Glad you enjoyed!

The poughkeepsie and eastern went under just west of salt point turnpike.
Yup...that's roughly the spot I was at. Thank You!
It’s amazing how many obscure rail beds you keep finding that I never realized were here!
They're out there!!
The loading dock used to hold freezers and my dad worked the dock

Smith street used to have a huge train yard ..and then qent on to the scrap yard a lil ways past .
Thanks for sharing, Russ. Very informative video.

Ahh bummer wish I had known you were headed to this area, I would've joined you!!! Gotta let me know when you go out man!!!
It was kind of a spur of the moment thing...back in the Winter....
I used to live in Rochester New York and went by GRS and made plastic parts also
Awesome!
Thanks!

That's what I pretty much talked myself through in my "guessing out loud".......I had to think alot at that spot- that hurt!! Haha......Thanks Walt!
Is there any information available on what engines/builders the Poughkeepsie and Connecticut or Poughkeepsie and Eastern used?
I wouldn't know of any....perhaps some of the books that feature these 2 RR's would have some info. If I get some time I'll snoop around.
I presume SAM has all wheel drive. How does it do in the snow and ice
