  • Tailscale has many features that help you access your devices and information while away from your home or LAN. This video covers the Tailscale Exit Node feature, which adds another option for getting even more benefits from using Tailscale. I have been using this feature for a while now and recently had a chance to put it to the test on my trip to London and France. Tailscale has been a real game changer for me and is something I use daily. The Exit Node is a feature that adds even more usability to this otherwise great product.

      @@MikeFaucher the most popular application of this technology is to remote access a computer from the Internet. All member machines of a particular Tailnet belong to the same virtual network so any of them can remote into another such as using Remote Desktop. As I understand it, this connection is not encrypted from the other member machines so SSH is used within the Tailnet between these two machines. My interest is setting up a Tailnet and SSH at the same time in one stroke on the fly without having to install anything on the client machine. Just fire up a web browser, enter an IP address, authenticate, and connect securely. Tailscale has a browser-based SSH but I can’t still make head or tail out of it. So if you can make a video on this specific method, it would be great.

    Hey , first of all thank you! Glad I found you.
    I have installed some components, several nodes, Linux , windows and ect. I installed an exit node on the OPNSense router. I just watched your sub-net router vid and need to do that. I'm just struggling with all of these pieces and how they fit together... And then what you can do. Ssh etc.
    Again, thank you, this is helpful and keep it coming. There are a lot of basic getting started, but I need help on the end goal and overall picture! Thanks.

      Conceptually they are for different purposes. Tailscale natively, is point to point (client to client/server) and allows you to gain access to the resources on that device that you are connecting to. The exit node acts much like a third party VPN except that it routes all your traffic to one of your client systems that your deemed the exit node. The Subnet router is in my opinion the most powerful and flexible as it extends all the resources of your local network to the clients running Tailscale. For example, if I have a subnet router setup on my home/business LAN, I can access any devices such as a NAS, remote desktop, security cameras, etc., without having Tailscale installed on them from any client while I am away. I would only use the exit node when absolutely necessary as it slows things down. Hope that helps a bit.

      @@MikeFaucher Just so I understand (thanks for video btw) If I install Tailscale on my pfsense router and on my laptop, when I'm away from home I would be able to interact with my home network PC's as if I were at home, even if they didn't have Tailscale installed? I'm thinking being able to do tech support type stuff for my family - which I currently do all the time at home, but assumed would be difficult when away.

    Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your knowledge to the youtube community.
    I would like to discuss my issue to your to see if you could provide me with some light. I need a fast connection from my computers in located in Spain to office in Estonia; and actually I am connecting them though Exits nodes from Estonia to Spain; However speed is very low. I just need to be "located in Spain for accessing certain website" but I also need the conection to be as fast as possible. I think using Tailsclae slows the connection to 5Mbps instead of having the 100Mbps I have in both ends contracted to my internet provider. Do you know if Tailscale actually limits the speed or any other possible solution to solve my issue. Thanks in advance

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sergio, great question. As you have experienced, the Exit node can be very slow largely based on where you are, how far away, and the number of hops as it sends a request from your computer at your current location to the exit node, and then to the destination page, and back again. As it stands the exit node is best for an occasion use where privacy is needed but for you are doing you are better off with something NordVPN or other VPN provider if location is the primary concern as you can select the destination of where your traffic comes out. If you do not want to go that route, the only other way is to do a point to point using wireguard/OpenVPN as will be faster because it is direct IP to IP. If your routers do not support either you will have set it up on separate system on your network. The last option which should work if you are not streaming (it may work ok), is to disable the exit node, and remote desktop into the PC that is in the location you want. This is the method I prefer using for 98% of what I do. Hope that helps.

    Can you do a video, step by step on how to use tailscale to change my public ip address to a tailscale one hiding my real public ip address running my router traffic through a subnet router. Thanks

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an interesting suggestion. I will have to think about the best way to do this as you will have to use two different services. Tailscale, and something like NordVPN as Tailscale is not really designed to shield IP addresses. Great suggestion.

    mike - when I click on my QNAP NAS which is set up as my exit node, my internet connection drops. Turn off exit node and it comes back up. What could be causing this?

    can exit nodes allow a device which I cannot install Tailscale on, to reach nodes on the tailscale network? More specifically, I have a plex server running on a machine running tailscale as well in one location, and I'd like to connect it from a smart TV (not so smart that cannot install apps from playstore) from a different location? In both two locations I have other tailscale nodes.

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is exactly what a subnet router does. Use the Tailscale subnet feature not the exit node. The exit node is different and routes all traffic from remote systems through one system. I use a subnet router to do exactly what you want.

      I used a travel router while I was there for general browsing and it was great to safely surf. It is faster than the exit node. Great question.

    How to improve the speed it’s very slow

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Can you explain what speed you are getting and the speed of your internet. Because you are going through some extra hops and depending on location, it may be a bit slower. As an exit node, you are routing traffic from your current location through a provider, to your exit node, then going out to the internet.
