    I had mine as a 30th anniversary present from my wife, just 2 weeks ago. We flew to London for the weekend to celebrate and picked the car up the day before our return journey to the south of France. It was a long but glorious journey, catching many an eye as we cruised across France. A wonderful gift, great car and lovely wife (who is not allowed to drive it). It was a fair swap, as I had bought her 30 red roses which were delivered to our kensington hotel suite! I really love her....and my wife isnt bad either lol!

    Excellent review.
    I have a similar XJ6, a 4.2. One of the biggest issues is rust building up on the insides of both fuel tanks. This causes tiny rusted particles to clog up the fuel lines and injectors thus resulting in the engine jerking quite a bit. Had to remove the tanks, clean them up, weld them and finally have them reinstalled. Initially the jerkiness was still there as some particles were present in the fuel lines. Was advised to change the fuel filter which I did at least twice. Now the car runs really well.
    One other thing I noticed before the fuel tank clean up, was the jerkiness that was present when the fuel tanks were low or below half tank, there’s very little jerkiness if the tanks were fully fuelled. So, I used to fill the tanks full after a long drive.
    A long drive (I do about 50kms) once a week improves the performance very much and keeps the car in really good shape. Avoid short drives especially where the route has numerous traffic lights or where the traffic prevents a long cruise at a consistent speed.
    All the best to those interested in the Series 3. It’s such a beautiful car, the ride quality must be experienced to be believed. It has performance, comfort and luxury and for its era, must have been one great machine!

    I just bought a series 3. Found a low mileage example locally for a great price. I have to pinch myself everytime I see it, gotta be one of the prettiest cars ever made, and sounds like a spitfire going down the road!

      It's bright red like a British post box, and no just a 4.2 6 cylinder. I should say it sounds like "half" a Spitfire going down the street - haha!

    I drove a Series III XJ6 for many years as a daily driver. Great car. And reliable. Never once was I stuck by the side of the road. (For that matter, I've had 5 Jags and none of them have ever left me stranded). It's getting harder and harder to find a good Series III, though. Age, rust, neglect eventually take a toll

    We've been the 2nd owners of our 1987 Vanden Plas since 1989, which still sports its original paint and interior fittings. The most beautiful four door saloon ever produced, we knew it was a keeper the day we bought it. To date It has given us 147,000 miles of near flawless service, with only careful regular servicing and replacement of wear items as necessary, and we do not hesitate to take it on any road trip. Drive 'em 'til the road wears out!

    Thanks for your report. Really well done. I have a 1985 S3 XJ6 with 150,000 Klm and a full history since it left the UK. I love it, and it really enjoys her occasional drive from Adelaide to Mt Gambier on those excellent roads. Its like riding on a cloud. She likes her car cover and carpeted garage floor in the garage. I might have to sell her due to my failing vision, which is a worry. Thanks again.

    great review Mike. i have an '87 xj6 and it has been running great since i spent some money on it initially. A/C needed replacing and i replaced the leather on the front seats. i've had a few minor repairs since then but nothing major. i put about 300 miles per month on it mostly on beautiful back roads. very relaxing.

    Lovely video thank you. I have a 1983 Jaguar XJ6 and it is a most enjoyable auto to drive and the pleasure grows the more one drives it. I think these cars were one the most stylish automobiles ever made. She's a real lady !

    Very good advice about pressure washing. You create 100% humidity with them so wherever the air goes, the moisture does too.
    You have a beautiful car, I love all cars that have a Pininfarini influence or design, but the Series lll is my favorite car of all.

    What i like about this review is you manage to say alot in a short space of time. Very informative. The only thing you did not mention is how good the A/C, Heating and ventilation system is compared to cars of today.

      The heating is good if a bit slow to get up to temperature in cold weather. This means that defrosting the windscreen in cold weather involves wiping it until the heating arrives. The ventilation is also poor compared to modern cars. The Series 2 XJ6 had better ventilation with its front 1/4 vent windows in my opinion. Finally, the factory air conditioning is not up to the task for a hot climate like Australia. It's better than nothing though.

      @@MikesMachines We had a 1993 Jaguar Sovereign. The heater was fast on this and the a/c was excellent even when the temp hit 30c. Yes it does get this hot in the UK in the south. However, it is a disgrace that Jaguar did not have this sorted even this long ago. American cars have been blasting out ice cold a/c since the mid 1960's. No excuse when one of your highest earning markets is the USA.

    Beautiful cars with an amazing driving experience, I had a 1985 Jag the only problem I had was with the tappet guides rising up the head and hitting the camshaft, which Jag have remedied with a stay down kit you can get

    Owner a series one that blew up, series 2 that blew up, then a series 3 V12HE that oddly proved perfectly reliable. Only sold that when the aircon failed and they wanted damn near the value of the car to fix it !
    I’m envious of you mate...today I wish I still had it

      Ngo ta Ara Hi I appreciate your interest. I think the XJS is an awesome car. I love the engine and the exhaust’s deep cat like rumble as it resonates at idle. It’s also a Looker! One of my favorite views is the long Bonnet! Whenever the XJS is visible it gets complements and generates conversation. I opted for the straight 6 and I’m quite pleased with the reliability and performance. I add a full can of Seafoam at every fill up (about 10 to 12 weeks) as I don’t drive them frequently. I’m often asked which of my Jags is better. In all honesty there isn’t a legitimate comparison. The factory stereo is quite impressive rivaling the factory sound system of the ‘15 Lexus IS F Sport in the fleet. My XJS is a drophead and the body flex is undetectable. The steering is tight providing great feedback allowing the car to feel connected to the road. I’ve had no major issues with my XJS. However I’ve experienced a sensor and or relay failure through time which are due to aging. However they’re an easy fix. My XJS is holding up quite well as I’m not abusive with my toys. Overall the straight 6 XJS is a great machine. All this talk about the Jags is urging me to go to the garage and give ‘um a look over. If you have additional questions ask away.

    great and informative . I got my 83 4.2 one owner for 3ks which was cheap for a well looked after car. But it only took 25 ks to find out why! the head was leaking badly, I had checked the oil which was good! In fact it was new oil! I should have wondered why? Here is my point, when buying a jag, make sure the head is good! take a jag mechanic with you. My re build has taken up a couple of years, many hours, problems and about $7000 and that is with me doing all the work! the average cost for a rebuild is $14000! of course if you want to buy my two owner 4.2 it will cost you 10ks! You get what you pay for.

    Still a beautiful car. I had a '79 series III 3.4 in 1991. It must've been a poverty spec one because it had cloth seats, which I'd not seen in a Jag before or since. Those XK engines are great, mine was already starting to bubble around the headlights on the front wings with rust although I think mine was a tired example as it also smoked & had low oil pressure.

    Have had my 83 xj6 since 2009 colbult blue with doeskin and burl walnut interior have spent a fair amount getting it back to par I love driving it on car club runs, if u are a member of a club u can have it registered on historic plates in nsw Australia for $50 year including green slip what a bargain, having the pepper pot wheels reconditioned next week, a gray colour with machined outer rim should make it standout from other series 3s

    Beautiful Series 3 Mike. Is yours Clarendon Blue? I have an 85 in Cobalt, my 3rd series 3 over the years. Yep they are thirsty around 220k’s per fuel tank. I don’t object when it’s the most comfortable car in the world.

    i have and have had limited use classic jags and others , i never wash them , just
    dust and polish them , they never rust , especially as the water goes inside the doors
    inner wings etc .
    one way to sort the doors is to take the door cards off and waxoyl inside , and on the
    xj6 , take off the front wheel rear splashguard , and waxoyl inside the rear front wing
    if you use any old jag in wet weather , it will soon go rusty , even the 1990 s are no
    better !
    apart from that one of the best saloons ever !

    7 months ago I was faced with the choice between one of these babies (fully restored and serviced) and a Saab 95 2.3 Turbo Aero 2008. Still doubting if I made the right choice, allthough the Saab is a great ride.

    Hey Mike, I've been looking into one of these (also in Australia) but I've never owned a vintage car before. Besides the age-related maintenance, the main thing I'm stuck on is the fuel type. The cars from that era tend to require leaded petrol, which isn't really common in New South Wales anymore if at all... are lead substitute additives absolutely required? If unleaded, is it high-octane only or will it run on regular/e10?

      The consensus is that the XK6 engine fitted to the XJ6 is fine with unleaded petrol. The problem with valve seats mostly effected engines of the period fitted with cast iron heads. I do find though that 98 octane fuel works the best in mine. Lower octane fuels I've found can cause pinging under heavy load in hot weather.

      Who told you that ? They run on unleaded never had a problem I have 3 . A mark 2 , XJ6 1986, and a X300 1995, all run on unleaded.

    I am a LCdr in the RCN coming up to the end of my career. My lovely wife chose to purchase a place in Fort Lauderdale Florida, obviously I was on duty in the North Atlantic.thus, I’m looking at getting a 1988 xj6 for my Florida car. In Canada we use salt quite liberally during the winter, so that’s a reason I have never owned one here..
    I have enjoyed your video, is there anything else I need to know.

      Apart from age related issues with rubbers and general wear and tear they are pretty reliable cars. The only major thing to watch out for is a head gasket failure. This can be caused by either a cooling system problem or by neglect. The Engine runs an alloy head on a cast iron block and is very susceptible to electrolysis and overheating failure. Keeping the cooling system in good condition and using the right coolant is critical.

    Nice vid!I have a 84 XJ6 with the 4.2 that has low power problems (passing cars etc). Top speed is 80 mph!Compression checks good. Any adivce?

      It could be a number of things but the first thing I'd check would be fuel pressure and change the fuel filter if it's been in there awhile. Secondly I'd check the ignition timing and the mechanical advance operation. Thirdly I'd check the air cleaner element and replace it if it's very dirty. I've had electrical issues in the past that have effected the fuel pressure too. The fuel pump is routed through a couple of relays and the collision cut out switch inside the cabin. Make sure the connections are good and replace the relays if they look dodgy. Finally I'd check the air flow meter and the ECU. The ECU can be checked by swapping it over with a known good one. I'm not an expert on how to check the airflow meter so can't advise there.

    My Dad had the equivalent Daimler Sovereign of this car with the same XK6 engine. In 1992 (in Britain) he bought it for £1200 and then after just one year, sold it for the same price. Sadly I wasn’t born when he had it.

    Sir William Lyons retired in 1972 but did visit the factory from time to time. I don't think he had much to do with the changing design of the series 3. His favourite car was the series 1 (Which was he last) which he owned and did not swap for the series two which unfortunately had the original traditional style dash removed. The exterior design of the series 3 was done by Pinna Farina. I can't accept that William Lyons had anything to do with the changes even though most Jag lovers believe so. William Lyons had a great sense of design which included Balance, Harmony and order. He favoured the curvacious shapes in his cars and after he retired one could see the absence of his design and taste. I have often wondered if his wife Gretel, had some support into his designs by way of her feminine input. He often had the proto types taken to the front of his house. Anyway I miss his unique curvacious designs. In the seventies I owned one of the original XJ6's. It was the second car I owned and the best car I ever owned. My first car was a 1966 Jaguar 420.

    The series two is the most pretty of the three series. But as a daily driver the series 3 will most likely be the most dependable one. Especially with the 4.2

    Hi Mike, I have the same model but 1984 and the rust is getting to it in the places that you mentioned. Could the body be repaired or did you have to replace certain parts of it? Thanks

      The rust on mine wasn't too bad but new sheet metal was added where required.

      @@MikesMachines thanks so much Mike! Have you had to change the coolant fluid in your Jags? I cannot find any of the brands specific in the original manual and I couldn't find online which one would be suitable in Australia

      I can't recall the brand of coolant I used (I've sold my XJ6). But because of the alloy head you need to use the right type. Best to ask on a Jaguar forum.

    I'm considering selling my beloved 1988 BMW 325i sedan (which I've owned for 20 years/21 in June) to purchase a nice example 86/87 XJ6. Looking for a white one. I think the XJ6 would be a nice spring/summer/fall driver to regularly drive to the gym & so forth.

      A late model series three is certainly worth looking at. Just be aware that it may disappoint from a performance point of view compared with your 325. The three speed auto in the XJ6 is rather sluggish like all autos of the period. The manuals are much nicer to drive but harder to find because there were so few of them.

      methebeachbum I replaced my 2015 c300 with a 90 xj6. The ride on the Mercedes was not luxurious it could be a Jetta. And the wood was fake and the leather was fake. Only thing to miss about the Mercedes is the fuel economy.

    Mercedes and BMW both still look under there beds to see if an XJ6 is there . Anything after the series 3 was naff .
