I live in the Mojave Desert California and lived in Victorville for 35 years! It's fun to see the area and hear the references to the area. What a well acted movie! Redford played in several movies that weren't big hits,. In the box office but huge in quality for us movie lovers! Blake was so good! Clark n Ross very good as well!

Everybody deservse better than to live in a reservation..And yet what is more sad to me is that they have allowed their spiritual believes..rob them of their inner power...Because the Spirit of life is allways within men and not in clay or flesh...Believing that being disconnected from the land of their ancestors is so strong with in them that is is killing the emotionally and spiritually..leaving walk around like zombies( spiritually dead) Realizing that the Spirit is allways within them wherever they may go is what will give them back the wings to soar like eagles free and powerfull wherever they are. This proves how strong beliefsystems( vibrations of thought and emotion) are..

This is an underrated film that was released at the end of a tremendous decade of upheaval. I have watched it 3 or 4 times and I think its very well directed and photographed, the cast is fine especially Redford and Clark, and the editing is adroit. It is based on a true story and it actually does that story justice. The relationship between Clark and Redford is complex and well written and they both deliver strong performances. Amazing that Ross started her career with Butch Cassidy, The Graduate and this film.

Willie Boy's marker is located on Ruby Mountain, off Dixie Mine Road off Old Woman Springs Road (247) North out of Yucca Valley. Been past it a hundred times, never knew it was there.
Sad story. Hunted down like a dog just because he loved a woman.
He was a local legend where I spent much of my chilhood. My best friend was a Morongo Indian. Dirt poor. I used to go out into the desert and pretend I was Willie Boy escaping the whites. My friend would be the Sheriff. He always caught me, but I sure learned a lot about the desert. It wasn't exactly the best jungle training for Vietnam, but the fieldcraft experience was invaluable.

My grandma, great uncle and great aunt lived in Twentnine Palms where we'd come visit often.
Now there's a bunch of murals there, I saw on line.
To be honest, I wasn't raised to see race or color, or discrimination in that way.
It's something we're taught gradually, sadly, but we can make better choices by getting the right association of enlightened people. My great aunt & uncle traveled the world but never moved from their place (with a pool) in Twentnine Palms.

What a place. Coyotes, tumbleweeds, cactus, roadrunners, Marine base, lots of quiet, blue sky and time on our hands.
My great aunt & uncle traveled the world tho. Trips to places few Americans would go to at the time. Like behind the "Iron curtain", Egypt, the Amazon, and they brought back photos in their camera, which my aunt developed in her dark room (converted bathroom). A bit ponderous but along with other good films of the era it has to be credited with helping to bring about a sympathetic attitude to the plight of native Americans who suffered terribly at the hands of the whites. Willie could have been played by an Indian but I doubt audiences of the time would have been quite as receptive such was the prevailing mindset of the time.

    • @zxyatiywariii8
      @zxyatiywariii8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I don't think it would've made audiences any less receptive if he'd been played by an Indian; I just think there were very few Indian actors (if any) who auditioned for the role. Acting looks easy, but it's really a very difficult skill to do well.
This is why I don't mind when white actors and actresses play people like me (which Hollywood has done throughout its history, even using brown makeup and colored contacts and, in the 1960s, sometimes even entirely prosthetic eyelids).
It would be awesome if there were actors and actresses of every race, but ultimately what matters is if they do a good job of capturing the audience with an empathetic performance.
I only ever play extras, I don't have the skill to play an actual role. And that's fine; everyone has different gifts in life.

But how could it end otherwise is my query.
It should have gone to court (white mans) or council (native American).
I'm not sure how the Native Americans deal with murder, (the initial murder being Lola's father), and if that was self-defense on Willie's part or not isn't clear, but certainly if it wasn't self defense, Willie would know in his heart that there would be a reaction. And even if it was, he probably didn't trust a fair "trial" because so many white people didn't like the Indians no matter what.

never ever seen this movie. But WOW!! Really Really Great film! Different. A plea from indigeones peoples to be left to their ways, reflection of encroaching modern "civilization", and a sheriff who, rather balances on a tight rope between the "new way of modern and progressing times", and the world values of "the Real People", finds where his truth lives....

I have been to the canyon in Morongo Valley where the final shoot out with Willie happened. There is a historical marker on that spot.
