When making this video I was really only considering 2D games, but I find Metroid Prime to be one of the only 3D games that I think could be considered to be a Metroidvania. I played it exactly how I would a 2D title.
Love this list. Super Metroid and Hollow Knight are forever in my favorites, and Dread was another amazing game. I liked AV and Ori but not top 10s for me.... 1- Super Metroid 2- Hollow Knight 3- Bloodstaind 4- Metroid Dread 5- Castelvania (tie between SotN, Aria, Dawn)
I was surprised to see Hollow Knight come in at #2, and then I became very curious what was #1... and it absolutely warmed my heart to hear that iconic SuperMetroid music.. great choice for the top spot. I played SM when it was first released and it blew my mind back then... never had I played anything like it, and little did I know it would later become an entire genre that I would fall in love with.
My top 5: 1. Super Metroid 2. Axiom Verge 3. Metroid Zero Mission 4. Metroid Fusion 5. Metroid Samus Returns 3DS I’m more of a Metroid style fan than the “Vania” type fan myself
Judging by your list, it would seem so😂. I’m with you though, I don’t care as much for the RPG elements. Also, I’ve actually never played Zero Mission, would love them to drop it on the Switch
Great list, I played Super Metroid for the 1st time last year & was surprised by how great it was! Apart from your list, Blasphemous & Steam World Dig 2 are two of the best Metroidvania games I played.
Much appreciated! I know Blasphrmous is a favorite for many, but I just struggled getting into it, I’m not the biggest fan of the “souls-like” gameplay but that’s just me. That being said, I’m actually replaying Symphony of the Night right now and enjoying it more this time around
1. Super Metroid 2. Metroid Dread 3. Steamworld Dig 2 4. Metroid Fusion 5. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Pretty Metroid heavy list, but I haven't played many other Metroidvanias beyond that. I'm playing through the Messenger for the first time, and I did not know the twist of it actually being a metroidvania. It blew my mind. It will probably take Bloodstained's spot on my list.
I'm all for the melee style metroidvanies. The shooter ones just never seem to appeal at all when I have tried them (including Super Metroid). It's just not my style. Hollow Knight is an easy #1 for me, I keep going back to it, and I absolutely adore the Ori games. Enderlilies was great, just played through it once so far though. I keep going back to Yoku's Island Express (pinballvania), it's just so fun and different from the rest.
I'm always on the lookout for new Metroidvania games and I've never heard of MoonScars until this video. I'll have to check that one out! I enjoyed your list. My top 5 for Metroidvanias: 5. Ghost Song 4. Blasphemous 3. Salt & Sanctuary 2. Ender Lillies 1. Hollow Knight
I agree with all of your points on Metroid Dread except for your conclusion. I don't think Metroid Dread is an essential play for the metroidvania genre specifically, because I feel that the metroidvania aspects of the game are where it's at its weakest. The way the level design railroads you through a very specific route during the entire course of the game, how the elevators connecting each world feel completely random, tossed in to facilitate this railroading and nothing more, makes it stand out to me as a pretty poorly executed example of metroidvania world design. In the video you mention all of this, so I find it interesting that movement and presentation alone made you keep it on the list, despite the metroidvania aspects of the game (level design, progression, etc) is lacking. I think Metroid Dread is an absolutely top tier 2D action platformer and an exceptional Metroid game, but an awful metroidvania. Either way, great video!
Thank you! And that's a good point. I think that even though Dread is lacking in the metroidvania aspects that you mentioned, it still is technically a Metroidvania at heart that excels in other areas like the gameplay and presentation. So I guess my logic is that despite its flaws, its positives really help prop it up.
@@scottevensen2615 the loading screens didn't bother me. i think thematically and they fit the game's tone and atmosphere fine, and they weren't too terribly frequent. not nearly as bad as like, Pikmin 4
You have a lot more patience than I. Sure, I love playing Dread but every elevator, every tram, every teleport takes ~20 seconds which is nuts. I'd say they are JUST within the bounds of playability-any longer and they'd seriously detract from the experience.
Thank you! I haven't played Ender Lillies before I'll have to check it out. I definitely would have added Prime but I was really only focusing on 2D titles.
Drop your top 5 below👇
1. Metroid Dread
2. Death’s Gambit: Afterlife
3. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
4. The Messenger
5. Shadow Complex
1. Castlevania SOTN (my favorite game of all time)
2. Super Metroid
3. Metroid Prime
4. Aria of Sorrow
5. Hollow Knight
When making this video I was really only considering 2D games, but I find Metroid Prime to be one of the only 3D games that I think could be considered to be a Metroidvania. I played it exactly how I would a 2D title.
Blasphemous is up there with Super Metroid in atmosphere

My top five is the same as yours except I would switch out Super with Prime(but Super is close under)
I definitely would have had Prime in here as well, but I really only had 2D games in mind when making this video.
Just finished axiom verge a couple weeks ago.. glad I picked it up.. really good game. Also great list but dread is number one for me
Absolutely worth it!
What game was that with the dude with an umbrella jumping on water?
It's called Islets. It's a pretty casual metroidvania but still fun.
Grime anyone? for me its in top 5 ez :)
I think Grime is a good game, but for me, I just did not like how slow the combat/gameplay felt. That’s just personal taste though
In no order
1. SOTN
2. Shantae and the 7 Sirens
3. Bloodstained
4. Super Metroid
5. Hollow Knight
I'm always on the lookout for new Metroidvania games and I've never heard of MoonScars until this video. I'll have to check that one out! I enjoyed your list.
My top 5 for Metroidvanias:
5. Ghost Song
4. Blasphemous
3. Salt & Sanctuary
2. Ender Lillies
1. Hollow Knight
If your a fan of Blasphemous types then you’ll definitely enjoy it! The gameplay is a lot faster in Moonscars

Also, those friggin loading screens! Sooooo slow =p

Great list. Some that I might include in my list that you didn't already mention are Ender Lilies, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow and Metroid Prime.
Thank you! I haven't played Ender Lillies before I'll have to check it out. I definitely would have added Prime but I was really only focusing on 2D titles.
ok “metroidvania games” and you add metroid no credibility. blaster master maybe but yoku’s island adventure should have taken a spot
Respectfully, Metroid games are still Metroidvania games
