I've had a white noise machine for six years now. Soundofsleep dot com I think. Ended up getting two and a travel one. I start every night with the old Ricky/Karl XFM radio then switch on the machine...
Yeah this trick is called black noise. A noise that is the same as the original noise that phases out each other. Some noise canceling headphones are working the same way. And i think military gear (like helicopters and vehicles) work the same way, to mask their sounds and become a lot more quiet and hard to detect.
You don't hear it unless you listen for it. If you just start thinking about stuff, you can't hear your heart beat; it's only when you're listening for it.

Pretty sure the vacuum cleaner thing is true. As in it's a form of white noise, meaning you get used to it then other noises are drowned out by your new perception of silence. Although a vacuum cleaner might be a bit too loud for that to work.
I HAVE to sleep with a fan. If I stay somewhere without a fan I just pull an all nighter staring at the walls. I've slept with a fan just about every night for 25+ years. A vacuum cleaner is a bit scary because it is much much much more common for vacuum cleaners to catch fire. I also assume the electric motor in a common fan uses a lot less electricity.
A white noise machine is the one, charge it up for 30 minutes and you get a full nights kip out of it, much cheaper than the fan I've used for 20 odd years.
@MrDX1118 It doesn't have to do with tinnitus in my experience, although I imagine it would help for someone who has it. It's just way too eerily silent without a fan once as you've slept with one.
I recently asked a client to write their name in one spot and sign it in another - with a smug look and tone they asked “don’t you mean /print/ my name there?”; I imagine that this is how Karl feels on a regular basis.

I use ambient noises to fall asleep every night. It really frustrates me how Ricky and Steven will just immediately discredit anything Karl has said...on the sole argument that it's Karl that said it. Bloody hell. So many instances where _"I have at some point in my life, BEEN Karl Pilkington"_ I once have- and still recall, saving insects from a pool, when I was quite young. A white butterfly to be specific. While in the army, I slept outside under my bivouac, next to a gas-fueled power generator, so our superiors could sleep nice and warm inside the armored vehicle. I slept surprisingly well, under the constant droning of the generator, sounding like a lawnmower next to my head and when the damn thing ran out of fuel after 2-3 hours, I woke up instantly from the thing shutting off... I tried going back to sleep, but my superior poked his head out and immediately yelped "Renard!! We'll get cold! Go refuel the generator." I usually sleep with earplugs, but I often get bothered at first, because my pulse in the veins in my ear is causing slight friction, them being right next to your eardrum, actually causing a significant ruckus. The best way I can describe the sound is, as if a bloke is shoveling gravel just outside your door, one scoop per second. The sound goes away as your pulse goes down while resting resting, but if you need to move, like turn to switch side, the pulse may slightly increase and you hear the noise again, albeit briefly.

The vacuum sound does work actually. My mum used to put me to sleep as a kid by vacuuming at bed time.
