    When Bill McCumber sent me his 1967 Telecaster, he knew it needed some work, as the high E-string was resting against the bridge pickup, and the action was already set fairly high. I raised the action and did a neck shim to help it, but I knew more work was needed to get it playing right for the long haul. As both Bill Lawrence pickups were non-adjustable, I knew some changes had to be made. I decided to keep the Lawrence neck pickup that I really loved and remove the bridge pickup and modified wiring. This allowed the Tele to have a nod to both eras of its past, by keeping some of the Bill Lawrence mods and installing a standard bridge plate, control plate, and Ron Ellis 60T bridge pickup. Now with at least one pickup height adjustable, the guitar's volume and tone could be set to be much more balanced.
    Today's Book Nook is for the Galaxy of Strats by Yashuhiro IWANADE It is on the expensive and hard-to-find side, but can be found on eBay or Amazon in Japan.
    Special thanks to Bill McCumber for the fabulous guitar, and for Dan Strain's restoration work and the use of his workbench.

    This makes me miss my '68 identical to yours, except the only mod to mine was a DiMarzio Fat Strat pickup in the bridge. I had a '93 MIM all white Tele w/a "Wilde" (Bill Lawrence's Daughter & Husband) Hot Rails pickup in the bridge. I went to play it live & it just squealed horribly, it had 500K pots in it (way too much) so I put 250K pots in it & it did the trick. Another Guitar I wish I still had. Congrats on your '67/'68, she's nice.

    The same author wrote "The Beauty of the Burst" and that is a fantastic book as well. It catalogs all the known "Burst" Les Pauls of the time. I might note that it is pre-Bonamassa so you get to see several other owners. 🙂 Full of excellent information and fantastic photos. It is written in English.

    Zac! I'm falling more in love with telecasters!! Love the video ! I was wondering if you have or plan on doing any episodes on tele custom or deluxe models or perhaps a little history lesson on them. I kinda happened upon a MIM tele custom and am going to upgrade it to probably more of what a 72 was actually like. I understand those wide range humbuckers back then were something quite different than what we get today. Cheers! Thanks again

    I'm glad that you were able to get the repairs done on that tele. It looks like a wonderful instrument and I saw the video where you talked about how you got it.
    There are a couple of questions that I have for you. The first is, what is the Vox amplifier that is in your intro? And the second is a little more in depth regarding vibrato (tremolo) arms on guitars. I saw your video where you played the strat and talked about how due to the floating tremolo system if you bend a note on one string and then hit another string the second note will be out of tune due to the floating tremolo. Do you find the same thing happens with the Bigsby tremolo system?

    • @AskZac
      @AskZac  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bigsby trems don't go out of tune like a floating trem. The Vox is a 1964 AC10 that has a new cab.

    Question; could that plate on the neck pickup somehow be mounted on springs so that it could be made adjustable just like a regular Tele neck pickup?

    This was a great video informative as usual. Always been keen on a Tele with bigsy did you have to shim the neck or did it come with an angled neck pocket already? Does the bigsby hold tune as well?

    • @AskZac
      @AskZac  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It needed a shim. The Bigsby does stay in tune pretty well.

    I love the Guitar
    I love the original sound
    I love the new things you've done with it but I really don't see the point of a three-way switch anymore now the four-way switches are so readily available but that's just me I guess..?!
    (I also feel that the volume control is way too close to The selector switch especially if that selector switch is not at an angle but, as I say, each to their own😉👍)

    is it possible the body is a 1959? As there's no string through ferrels? I'm only aware of 59 and my 1983 Tele being top loaders with that clean back. Also you might contact Becky or Shannon @ Bill Lawrence Wilde Pickups for a bridge pup match to the neck pickup. Becky (Bill's wife) and Shannon (daughter) carry on with Bill's designs. I use them in pretty much all my builds and they're as good as what Bill made for me years ago. Another great video Zac, thanks.

      @@AskZac Yeah, I was going to ask Sweetwater to install one on a new Fender Performer Series Telecaster with a HB in the neck position but did some research and found that it can adversely affect the tuning stability. Something to do with the string angle. But I see that you have one in your collection. Is that Bigsby factory installed? I know that Fender MIJ has a model with a factory installed Bigsby with an ash body. There’s one for sale on Reverb right now.

    Not to take anyyyyyyything away from this storied beast, but I personally don't care for this sort of French mustard colour. Would this have been white with a clear coat that yellowed, or would it have left the factory like this? I know it's a common colour... colour also isn't a strong suit for me.
