FYI, a great alternative to flaxseed gel is oat gel!! My hair gets weighed down really easily, even the oils in the flaxseeds, so the oats were a game changer for me. My recipe is 2 cups water with 3tbsp oats & you boil & strain just like the flaxseeds 👍

@@loanicastillo3327 I usually use the "old fashioned" style oats, but in a pinch I have used steel cut oats successfully too (just boiled longer than regular oats)!

@@doriannrodriguez3149 The tutorial that I follow on TH-cam is from Swavy Curly Courtney! It's 2 cups water 3tbsp oats, then you just bring the oats to a boil & set a timer for 5-6 minutes while stirring regularly. After you strain all the water/gel out of the oats, let it cool in the fridge. Then in the shower, I like to use the gel as more of a leave in conditioner that I cover my entire head in, brush through evenly, then scrunch out as much water as possible with a few t-shirts. Final step is to diffuse!

I would love to see more affordable routines/product recommendations! Thank you for doing this! The cost of living is going up so high, that it's difficult to focus on wants (products) when I'm always spending on needs (bills). I'm really struggling with money and don't have much money to work with, but that doesn't mean that I still don't want to take good care of my hair. So these types of videos are like gold to me! Products that are affordable, yet effective is what I live for! Living on a fixed income and not being able to work, is a very difficult way to exist in this world. Thank you for thinking of people like me!!! Everyone's budget is different! 💜💜💜

The easiest way to strain flash gel is with a French press. They are pretty cheap. If you have time soak the seeds overnight first. You get even more gel that way.
Jojoba oil has a similar molecular structure and composition to sebum. So it is great for a dry scalp and hair since it mimics out natural oils.

I am a big fun of flaxseed gel but I don't have the time to make it each time and it's not very shelf stable. My solution is to make a big batch and freeze it in an ice cube tray (it's food-sade anyway) and I just take a cube out and let it melt inside the fridge on my washday or the day before-microwaving it also works if you're in a rush.

Thank you, WOW! More great content from Mell! As I Am are my favorite products for my hair, and I didn't know they had bars...which I'd have hesitated to try if I hadn't seen you do it. Your vids taught me a ton about care and styling of my curly 3B mixed hair (bits are 3C, it's like a poodle in back). I learned how protein affects my hair from you (it hates it) and how to avoid it, why glycerine makes my hair get dried-out looking after day one, how to use a blow dryer to style properly (big thanks there), and that my hair has low permeability.
I've been making my own flax gel for a couple years now, and I love it way better than any gel I've ever tried, because it nourishes my hair and I can reapply it to freshen strategic parts during the week. You can easily break the cast with hand fluffing if you don't like ANY crispiness. I like to add a little lavender essential oil to stabilize the gel (so it doesn't go bad in a couple weeks in the fridge) and some sweet almond oil/argan oil too for extra hair love. A tip though: keep your fingers out of the gel when you are putting it into the jar or taking any out, because the bacteria will cause it to quickly spoil, natural product, right? and wipe the rim of the jar/container with a clean bit of paper towel after taking some out, so mold won't grow there. Seriously, mine lasts up to 3 months in the fridge and stays clean as a whistle. Great, cause it's a little chore to make it. Like you, I use a very fine sieve, one used for quinoa, and whole seeds, but raw ones. I didn't like the results with ground flax seeds. It's way harder to get the gel out without any stupid little ground pieces, and the last thing you want is to look like you have nits in your hair later. You will get noticeably more gel if you soak the seeds a few hours/overnight (in the fridge). With commercial gels, even ones other curly girls rave about, after looking great the first day, my hair looks dry and kinda dull and weighed down the second day. I tried misting to refresh but didn't get good results there. I got thirrrrsty hair. Flax gel looks great day one, and my hair is soft and nice and boingy still on the second day. I reapply a little to my dry hair if I want a spruce-up on ends and strategic parts during the week, super easy with great result (and I wear a cape so if a bit spills during application it doesn't look like there's dried snot on the back of my shirt later.) Wow, I wrote a lot. Thanks, thanks very much for all the hair help!!

I've been making flax seed gel for a few years now as it works far better on my hair than any I've bought. Boil 40g of whole brown seeds in 600ml water for ~20 mins. Leave to cool (it'll thicken a lot) & strain through a jam strainer bag. I've read you should add tea tree/lavender essestial oils to help preserve it, but I can't use either of those so I add rosemary & lemongrass (about 15 drops each). It'll last a few days in the fridge, but I freeze in individual portions then defrost in the microwave when needed. It's easier to apply if heated a bit, as it goes runny again. It leaves less crunch, flaking, and frizz than bought products, and my hair is more defined and soft. It's easily refreshed with a bit of water on day 2-3. By day 4 it starts to feel like I need to add more gel

So if anyone decides to make something like this gel, make it in smaller amounts so you don’t have too much left over. I mention this only because anything made from food that includes water, it will go rancid over time and can grow mould, yeast and bacteria. I’ve been learning about formulating skincare/haircare from organic ingredients so I’m totally nerding out here 😆 To prevent having to add preservatives to extend the shelf life to your natural hair gel, just make smaller amounts that won’t require you to store it for too long before it goes rancid. If you want to add a preservative, there ARE organic all natural preservatives you can add that won’t have harmful chemicals to your creation. 🥰

I'm excited there's a shampoo bar for curly colored hair. A lush shampoo bar is what kick started my curly hair journey -- it left my hair matted and waxy. After multiple clarification attempts to get the residue out, my hair was stripped off all oil. Then we hit the pandemic and I was like sure ok, might as well try the whole "wash your hair less" thing and realized I had a naturally curly pattern, not frizzy waves.
I love how my hair is now but not fond of all the clutter and wish-cyclable bottles. And being raised by a mom who was in turn raised by her grandma who lived through the dust bowl and great depression, I love stuff that's just as good on my wallet as it is for the environment 😌
What do you think about adding an acid to the flax gel? The water where I live is very mineral heavy so if I don't use anything with vinegar or some form of acid it gets so frizzy and limp. Also do you know if something like peppermint oil or rose water in the gel would mess it up or would be a nice addition to freshen it up?

I'd LOVE to try these but I know I wouldn't be able to handle the smell. If they come out with an unscented version, I'll be sure to give them a try.

I made my own flaxseed gel for several months and I really love it! It's really easy to refresh the hair with it as well. It's just like a normal gel. I even found a good preservative to add to it to make it last for a couple months. I added a few other ingredients to my flaxseed gel, but I'm still looking for a good protein product to put in it. Using just the flaxseed gel for a couple months gave my hair moisture overload and my curls went pretty limp. But I still love to use it when I'm feeling I need some moisture.

Love your new color, girl! It goes well with your skin tone. I have been seeing a lot of curlies making their own DIY flaxseed gels on TH-cam. I can barely boil water so I'm kind of afraid to do it myself. The results always turn out beautifully for everyone I've watched. Thanks for your upbeat tone, your videos always make me smile! 🥰😁

Complete convert to flax seed gel for about a year now. I'm only slightly wavy, with very fine hair, but my hair frizzes & morphs out of shape with any touch of humidity like many curlies, so I scour curly channels for advice.
Flax gel has been a lifesaver. Safe for my scalp, good lift all over, dries hard enough to get a cast, but brushes out to nothing, just soft, conditioned hair.
Comes out completely with my conditioner-only wash routine. (All natural products = able to wash with just conditioner, approved by my surprised hairdresser.)
I will say, it probably won't bother curlies used to soaking wet hair routines, but having the wet flax gel soak my partially dried hair caught me off guard. Takes longer to blow or air dry if you use a lot, like me.
MUST refrigerate, though, and it only lasts up to 2 weeks. Pitch it if it smells different.
    Worth every bit of effort.

FLAXSEED GEL is IT!! Ever since i started using it a few years ago it changed everything i freeze mine after i use it and it last months in the freezer i like mine thicker so i use 1/4 of flax with 3cups of water ,boil it for 10min, let it cool for an hour ,strain with a mesh bag , and then i put the seeds back in the pot add a little more water and they release more gel!! Then i add it to the gel that rested for an hour DEFINATELY will try to leave them soaking overnight following a comments advice

Mell, I'm from Bulgaria - most of us here know about this gel. Against the background of all branded products, I didn`t think you would ever mention it. Well done! Greetings from my country! I love your channel and thanks for the guidance. On both with your SEESTER!

I've used this gel during the summer. It can get very thick. If you'd like it on the thinner side... cook it less. Also... use a plastic condiment bottle for application. I've also seen people run it quickly through a blender in order to break it up, if you like it thick.

I use flaxseed gel for my fine, wavy hair regularly. I use it to refresh also. Love it 🥰 Sometimes I add Aloevera gel, or a little bit honey for extra hold. You could also use it as a pre-wash and add oils or proteins to it.

I’m so excited for the video. I used to use zero waste products before going curly, and once I bhought all my curly hair products I felt a little guilty. I love all but the conditioner bars no matter what brand I’d rather just use a liquid conditioner of a sustainable brand, and everything else be zero base

I only use diy flaxseed gel. For the past 3 years. I don't boil it as long I make mine more watery. Easier to strain. Then out it in a pump bottle and store in the fridge.
