This "bug" showed that the Xbox one was never really designed to be an offline console, but this change is massive for people like me that have a big library of physical games. It really bothered me how few people cared about this, especially for old games. People say "everyone has internet, it should never be a problem". But does anybody think about the other side? When Xbox servers go down for any reason, like a big public holiday or a DDOS attack, nobody can access the servers no fault of their own. Expecting the internet working for everyone 24/7 is just not a reality, even from the richest companies on the planet they have problems.
I also want to know who has an ISP with 100% uptime? My internet goes down all the time beyond my control, and of course I can't do anything about it because in the United States, ISPs have agreements not to compete with one another, so I can't switch to a better service. Why should I be locked out of single player games that I purchased because my ISP sucks? The people you described are living in a fantasy land where internet never goes down and servers never go down.
@@mjc0961 some people will never get it. They will say if your internet goes out just hotspot your phone! As if everyone has hotspot enabled in their wireless plan, or can afford to download literally a month worth of data you get allotted from many mobile carriers.

@@joeortiz5177 Hey! Besides requiring a one time online activation to finish setting up the console, most Series X discs come with virtually no data on them (Forza Horizon 5 only has 40mb on disc), thus having to install the entire game online. @@DeckTested You never wondered why all of a sudden we have " day one editions? " That's probably as much as you're going to get otherwise they will have many class action lawsuits.
HELL YES! Now they just need to get rid of the initial online check when setting up your console, they need to address the problem with stubs, and they need to allow Xbox 360 and Xbox games to be installed offline! I may just get a Series X because of this!
Thanks for always being a champion for game preservation and holding these companies accountable, even when the narrow-minded corporate shills attack you. You even got a shout out from Modern Vintage Gamer for drawing his attention to this new Xbox update. Keep up the excellent work, Hikiko!!!
Excellent news!! It's certainly a very good improvement. A problem that continues to exist, not only on the Xbox Series, but also on other systems such as PS4 and PS5, it's incomplete physical (also digital) games. I hope there can be a solution in the future for this issue.
"Stubs" should be illegal on all platforms. Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation: a playable version of the game should be on the card or disc if you buy one. No stubs, no "cloud", just the game on the media you bought. If they don't want to have the full game on the media, then don't sell a physical version. It's digital, so only sell digital copies.
Very happy to see! This has been one of my major cons of the system ever since I learned about it. They fixed it relatively quickly, which is nice to see. The fact that OG Xbox and 360 games aren't working without being able to connect online is unfortunate, but not surprising. Like an emulator for new software on PC, it needs to be downloaded first in order to run, since it doesn't natively work...and unlike something like Retroarch on PC, I believe the Xbox BackCompat team had the emulation fine tuned for each game, so it's sort of like downloading a version of the emulator that's tailor made for the game each time. Which to get that to work offline would mean a massive download for the ENTIRE 360 and OG Xbox catalog.....yeah. Not an easy fix there, but I'm sure the xbox team is working on ways to keep us happy, especially when we voice our concerns.
It has been a problem since Day1 (Nov of 2020) So it took them basically 2years to fix.. not so quickly in my opinion but GOSHH.. Im sooo happy it finally arrived 🙏
Next step is to remove the initial online requirement on first boot up. Let's keep pushing Microsoft for that one! Cuz then if you were to buy an Xbox Series X in the future a la cheap, you can still play any game on it even when the servers are completely shut down. Ideally, backwards compatible games would also not require online check ins either for this same reason.
Thats a nice update! Still not perfect but lets hope they keep improving. Next step is to allow full setup offline and to be able to use the console without the need of a MS account like Switch and Playstation does. It would be cool if they release better disc builds of their first party games too, FH5 Halo and Flight Sim all have incomplete discs builds as you mentioned. Its still a shame though how many Series X discs are just the Xbox One version of the game on disc.
That’s not going to happen atleast for now, they’re doing this to prevent console from getting hacked. I also tried to reset the console without deleting the games and i still need internet not only to set up the console but also to open apps and digital games for the first time lol, XBOX series S users are screwed lol
This is a major update. Your video on the prior behavior may have helped this. Kudos. Pretty awesome. For back compat it makes perfect sense. Those games are downloading the compatibility wrapper version.. I also would not expect to play gamepass games I don't own without a check in. But it makes a massive headache no more
I think it's fair game with the 360 and Xbox OG games because they were never supposed to run on Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles. But Xbox One and later games should be available when you are offline. I'm glad to see this change being implemented.
Still, they need to either release a console that natively supports all four generations of Xbox games or fix the emulators in an update so the Xbox/360 games can be installed offline.
That's the issue, there is a time limit to the digital games. You won't be blocked out of them till about a week or so. I was offline for a few months and my Xbox one x locked me out of half of my digital games and I'm sure it's no different on the series console. The fact that Xbox one disc SEEM to work offline natively is good but I'm not convinced till I get more details on the digital games. I already decided not to get an Xbox console after One X but this shows it may change if they start to loosen the DRMs more . Good step but they need to keep it going.
It happened during that big server issue they had that locked people out of all games. I used disc games I had at the time to play games. But probably before.
That's some great news! Hope this can work with OG and 360 games in the future. I believe each game have a set configuration that the console needs to download through internet to play them. My solution is just to have the config files stored in the console so you don't have to download them. It's kind of like Virtual Console on the Wii with some N64 games like Zelda Ocarina of Time. Wish this feature could be unlocked in the future by either Microsoft or the community thus giving the ability to create your own executables outside the official ones. You can do this on both the Wii and the PS3 with PS2 games. Can't say if you can do this on modern consoles since I don't own any of them.
@@timytimeerased backwaed compat games are back compatibile. What the system does is it downloads the same game with the emulation wrapper. That's why it will never work from disc. But as he's, shown once you install the digital version it works without being connected
Hikiko you the homie. Love the videos man. My most recent encounter with something like this was actually on Playstation, I was going to get my brother a copy of Elden Ring for PS4 but the guy is a cheap bastard who doesn't pay for internet since any internet related things he just does on his phone. Anyway, I do a little digging and found someone talking about how the game is all jacked up without its first update. Chests missing content, weapons and armor missing from the game, etc. I'd love to see a video exploring/covering this if you get the chance. Also I ended up getting him a copy of Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut since it has update 2.0 + DLC on the disc which is some good shit. Again, love the vids dude!
It's a shame but understandable that 360 games can't be installed without the updates. It would've been ideal to play GTA IV at 60fps on the Series X without the updates which removed a lot of the licensed music.
Whats also worst is that it was a swing and a miss when it comes to the digital games that lock you out. Like I couldn't play Alice Madness Returns, Brutal Legend and the Remastered Perfect Dark. But all 3 Max Payne games still worked, Perfect Dark Zero worked and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 worked fust fine with me being offline for a few months but it's best to test at least over a month for DIGITAL games. But I hope this update means that the Series consoles can at LEAST play Xbox one games digital/physical natively.
So when they said you needed to go online to "download config files" it was a lie. I knew it, because when Digital Foundry had their pre-release unit they never needed to.
It makes sense to need an internet connection for backwards compatibility since they use emulation they actually download the game from online since it's not playable from the disc
Agreed. It would be nice if their labeling of the physical media was more clear. In my previous video (link in description) I spent a whole segment about how confusing the branding is.
They will always put the Xbox One version on disc before they put the series versions of the game on there because that's the lowest common denominator when it comes to what version needs to be on. Most games don't add the series on there because there's not enough room on a Blu-ray disc. There are some games though that are small enough that they actually have both the Xbox One and the Xbox series game on disc.
I have never connected this device to wi-fi, so I unplugged the lan. All the physical games were installed from the disk with no preexisting data on the drive.
You should test to see if OG Xbox/Xbox 360 games work after they've been downloaded... offline. If handled properly, the disc should be the 'key' to launching it. That would make it like playing a game that you've downloaded the updates for. So long as you have the disc, that system should NEVER need to go online to verify, the disc should be all that's needed.
This was the reason I wasn't going to buy a Series X. The confusing branding is still a drag. And this shouldn't be cause for celebration, in fact, it's downright sad this is the state of gaming. But you, sir, had a hand in righting the course of the Xbox brand. I'm sure if it. Even if the "leased" and partially digital games don't just work, always, as they should.
They don't work because the xbox doesn't have a CMOS battery so when you turn off your xbox console it doesn't update the clock. And so they can't continue to let you play subscription games offline since anyone can just modify the console time offline to play games forever. You can try it yourself, delete all WiFi passwords/disconnect LAN cable, unplug console, wait 5 minutes, boot up console and you'll see the time is 5 minutes behind. Playstation consoles allow you to play subscription games offline because it has a CMOS battery. But that came with its own issues as you might remember. This is a step in the right direction from xbox though.
Could I play the halo remastered trilogy or whatever without having to download an enhancement update? Like I buy it off the shelf, put it in the console, it downloads the disc only (no internet), and I could actually play the full games??
Hey I watched this. Yet another reason to buy an Xbox yet here I am not playing my PS5.... Though I did get a steamdeck and am using it quite a bit. Also.... You been working out!?!
Not saying that every 1.0.0 verison games can work without bugs but when installed final fantasy stranger paradise on 1.0.0 verison there were no bugs ar least not on series x
og xbox and xbox one games should be fine in offline mode so long as they were installed before taking the system offline. 360 uses cloud saves so even if you were to get the game installed prior to offline... there would be no way to save the progress. That is a weird one though. Why they made 360 cloud save but you can do xb and one games with local??? If you play and xbox one game offline, when it eventually goes online it will sync the local save with the cloud which will then let you continue where you left off on another device.
hello, I just came across this video, just for my understanding: when I have a 360 game that I wanna play on the series x, will it still not play offline even if I had it connect to the internet once after the download and install is finished? or it basically needs the Disc as key and online confirmation check before start up everytime?
@@HikikomoriMedia I see, so say I have the first Splinter Cell on Disc and then install it to my Series X, I can not play it. But if I buy Splinter Cell from the online store purely as digital I can just play offline? that is really crazy, should I be better off just buying the digital retro games then from MS Store?
Yeah it's not natively backwards compatible in an offline manner. Digital copies come with a key. The disc has to call out to get the key. A bad system imo
Hello I just tried to test this by installing a game offline and it still wouldn't let me load the game up without going online first and updating it? I checked for a system update and I have the latest console update.. is there something I'm missing?
Generally, yes you should be able to play the Xbox One build. There are rare cases like Judgment where the Series X build is the only one on the disc. The labeling is super confusing and there's no database of disc content to clarify out there.
Yes, you first have to download the BC package from Microsoft's servers. They will launch offline, without further check-in needed, but you will need the disc if you used it as a stub to get the title.
Does this also work with the Xbox One X? I was excited for this, but all the games I tried told me I needed to download an update. Maybe I just need to be offline?
From what Destruction Games reported, the Flight Simulator disc is a "stub" - much like Halo Infinite. It contains a partial amount of data and needs to connect online to download the rest of the game.
@Hikikomori Media Too bad, Microsoft goes against itself, all its exclusives are not completely on disk. Forza horizon 5 is also the same problem. We hope for a change of direction in the future
@@HikikomoriMedia I am a collector and I don't buy many games just because of these problems, at least with this update something has improved, although the initial configuration problem remains

Also games with a offiline mode like borderlands 2 can also be played offine it don’t need internet checks either cause I played the remakes offine and they never made me go back online to install missing content either 6:17

It does work for Xbox 360 games, too, you've always had to install the 360 games with Xbox One/Series.
I was able to play XGP games offline in my RV this summer prior to this update. 🤔
They do. We tested them after the package had been downloaded. You're right, the disc does act as a key.
But how would they be able to install the Xbox/360 game offline in the first place?
Great news now I can sell my one x. That's why I was keeping it
This was the reason I wasn't going to buy a Series X.
Great Video!
Kudos to MS for taking action. Thanks for sharing the good news!
Great find!!!
Man, I'm really tempted to save up for a Series X, especially after hearing about this. I just wanna play EDF2017 in 4K, dammit!
EDF! EDF! * warcry *
hi mate there was bug in gamepass you can play game offline
Hey I watched this. Yet another reason to buy an Xbox yet here I am not playing my PS5.... Though I did get a steamdeck and am using it quite a bit. Also.... You been working out!?!
I played a lot of Wii for the last video and got JACKED
@@HikikomoriMedia based Wii Sports enjoyer LMAO
This is brilliant considering i have no disks on my xbox one all my games are digital so am buzzing bout this
Not saying that every 1.0.0 verison games can work without bugs but when installed final fantasy stranger paradise on 1.0.0 verison there were no bugs ar least not on series x
og xbox and xbox one games should be fine in offline mode so long as they were installed before taking the system offline.
What about digital downloads
hello, I just came across this video, just for my understanding: when I have a 360 game that I wanna play on the series x, will it still not play offline even if I had it connect to the internet once after the download and install is finished? or it basically needs the Disc as key and online confirmation check before start up everytime?
Disc as key. Or no disc if you bought digitally and launched the game once online.
@@HikikomoriMedia hmm that is unfortunate, big thanks for the insight and the helpful videos. :)
Hello I just tried to test this by installing a game offline and it still wouldn't let me load the game up without going online first and updating it? I checked for a system update and I have the latest console update.. is there something I'm missing?
Which game was it?
@@HikikomoriMedia sorry for the late response, it was middle earth Shadow of war. Any idea why it didn't work?
This was unexpected good news, hooray for my large Xbox one physical game collection.
So this mean that for smart delivery games the Xbox one version is installed and it is playable ?
Generally, yes you should be able to play the Xbox One build. There are rare cases like Judgment where the Series X build is the only one on the disc. The labeling is super confusing and there's no database of disc content to clarify out there.
I have a question. If you update the games online and then go offline, will the 360 and og xbox games work offline afterwards?
Yes, you first have to download the BC package from Microsoft's servers. They will launch offline, without further check-in needed, but you will need the disc if you used it as a stub to get the title.
Every time I think of all of this (almost every time I play a game) I see the solution clearer: piracy
You have to be home xbox'd, for games that are downloaded
What about the 360 console the 360 console has the same issue so does ps3 those consoles been having those issues
Does this also work with the Xbox One X? I was excited for this, but all the games I tried told me I needed to download an update. Maybe I just need to be offline?
I believe it was caught in 2013 I Believe but I could be wrong my Xbox one has been offine since then longer then 6 months
Does it also work with flight simulator? I haven't bought it yet because of the DRM
@@HikikomoriMedia I am a collector and I don't buy many games just because of these problems, at least with this update something has improved, although the initial configuration problem remains
the 360 and OG games are technically different SKUs...
NBA street volume 2?
Is there any way to know what games are stubs?
Take your Xbox offline and try to install it. Generally, stubs will be less than 1GB. Forza and Halo are two known cases.
@@HikikomoriMedia I mean games I don't have. I checked Does It Play but Plague Tale: Requiem and Callisto Protocol for Series X are not listed. Do you happen to know?
I also noticed that some games that are over 50GB do not require download for example GTA V. Could some games be compressed somehow?
Actually never mind GTA V apparently comes with two discs.
Also games with a offiline mode like borderlands 2 can also be played offine it don’t need internet checks either cause I played the remakes offine and they never made me go back online to install missing content either 6:17
Backwards compatibility would be cool offline but never happening
Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to stay connected; it's called Xbox 360 ~ Don Mattrick
You do know Xbox one and Xbox series run on the same servers right just not the original xbox and 360 have the same servers
What about Xbox series x then Xbox one have you ever seen games like that that say Xbox series x then Xbox one?
One more thing... I LOVE THAT SILENT HILL POSTER! I HAVE IT TOO!!!!
My favorite Silent Hill
@@HikikomoriMedia same! I need to play through it again :3
This never made sense. The PS5 was always able to install PS4 games offline.
The Next Step should be You Can Play Direcly from Disc just like on Xbox 360 back than. Yes it schould be possible ONE X and Series S have fast Disc Drives
I concur. It should have been a day one feature of the system
@@HikikomoriMedia O Yes and the Government should stop Game Studios ho brings Out unfinished Games or Partial game on the Disk it must be proibited !
This is why I don’t buy unfinished games i buy mostly complete gold editon and remakes mostly gold editons are just a full package but some have patches included
Do you still need to be online to set it up?
to do the initial account set up, yes
Can you try elden ring physical disc please ?
Does PS5 do this or they still on their old ways?
Here are my PS5 tests: th-cam.com/video/fsB0NosDlnA/w-d-xo.html
nice
I think you dropped replicant intentionally
Never!
Finally ...🤦at least I'm able to install majority of games I have and don't have to wait till next yr to have them all installed...😂
Xbox does what PlaystAINT'STION
This is good news
Only cross gen games suffered from this issue.
You mean the vast majority of physical media on the platform? Series X only discs are few or released as incomplete "stubs".
Finally now I can get an Xbox Series X
It works with digital game
Good deal!
Yup, I'm open to buying an xbox now, despite being a happy PS5 owner
Enjoy
I just want to play xmen origins Wolverine and Marvel Ultimate Alliance Series X
that X-Men Origins Wolverine game is better than the movie (not a high bar, but still).
@@HikikomoriMedia speaking facts!!
Hi from modernvintagegaming
hi
I never seen a Xbox one branded game that says Xbox one still then Xbox series x what games do that that are made that way honestly lol
Where is your asian girlfriend?
Goes to show tht the Xbox series x is just an Xbox one 2.0 🤣🤣🤣
