CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Miles (Paul Giamatti) blows up at Jack (Thomas Haden Church) on the golf course and they have an altercation with the golfers behind them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Alexander Payne, Sideways follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), who is distressed about his lack of success as a novelist, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), an equally unsuccessful actor with a rapidly approaching wedding. In a last-ditch effort to sow their wild oats, Jack and Miles take off on a final road trip to California's wine country the week prior to Jack's wedding. Both men have goals for the vacation -- Miles wants to turn Jack on to the art of wine tasting, while Jack is concerned with exploiting his last days as a bachelor -- but when the two men come across two fascinating women (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), the duo is forced to examine their morality, and if maturity isn't such a depressing prospect -- at least, for one of them.

I wouldn't mind if Paul Giamatti was in every movie.
Paul Giamovie IS in every matti.
I was so glad when he got his own big role in Billions. He kills it as Chuck.
Same
Absolutely
This movie made him a favorite of mine
Love that Jack feels the need to change clubs before waging his assault. LOL!
Gotta get the wood out for that.
Goin lumber
@@Stefanthenautilus That’s what SHE said! 😂
It would’ve been kinda funny if they just kept going straight and ran over him like a speed bump.
yeah that was funny. I think a firm putting stroke to the knee cap is all that's needed 😂
Honestly, a true masterpiece of a film. This ones going into the collection forever.
Indeed! Watched it again a couple months ago and found I liked it even more than I remembered.
You're absolutely right and it's amazing how under appreciated it is.
Notice when Miles actually wants to make a good shot, he does. When Miles WANTS something or to do something, it brings out the best in him. He wants Maya so most of the scenes with her are the best of Miles; like the eloquent speech about Pinot.
absolutely. the whole point.
He should’ve told him not to come over the top as he was about to swing
My observation about almost everyone is when they really want something, they will do what it takes to get it (or die trying).
Jackoffs.....
“You can choose to be less hostile” 😆
" Publish it yourself, get it in libraries. Hilarious.
Yeah, he has ZERO idea what he's talking about. Ignorant dumbass, lol. If it were that easy, millions of writers would be self-published.
@@akshaynatu6568 I mean, it’s TECHNICALLY very simple to publish a book yourself, on the surface at least. But it would cost a fortune and there’s no guarantee you’ll see the money back after doing it.
@@emperorreign6154 Exactly right.
he later says something like, "lets open a vineyard, you handle the wine, ill handle the business" the man lives in fairyland
Library is dead
I remember buying this on DVD in 2006. Watched it with my buddy and we thought it was hilarious. The following year I would go on to have a kid and get married. That following year I would get divorced and fall down into a hole that took 15 years to dig myself back out of. And now the movie means something entirely different and is significantly funnier than it was when I first watched it. The steady pace and hilarious undertone of the film accompanied by Paul's masterful performance make this one of the greatest movies ever made.
I live in the Santa ynez valley and lived here my whole life, just watched it a couple months ago cause it’s the only movie that takes place here. Very pleasant suprise haha
“You can chose to be less hostile....”
(Grabs club and starts running) “Arghh uhaa, Uhaaarggh Ahghaaaa”.
Jack is every friend who is positive.
And Miles is every guy who knows positivity is absolutely meaningless when it comes to getting what you want.

I always thought of them as a ship and an anchor. With out the anchor, the ship floats away and crashes. Without the ship, the anchor goes nowhere.
He absolutely tags that bladed stinger off the fairway and into their golf cart... truly a masterpiece of a shot lol
That shot, where the ball hits the golf cart, was hit by Rex Pickett, the novelist.
@@BakedRBeans I thought Alexander Payne the director hit it?
@@droz1000 No. It was definitely Rex. Listen to the cast commentary on the DVD. Paul and Thomas say it was Rex.Also, check IMDB trivia section for this film.
@Patrick I have watched it countless times, including just last night. Great film!
I can watch this film numerous times and still love it.
I loved the movie so much that I started reading the book. There are a lot of similarities, but enough differences to make both wonderful in their own ways.
It is a great movie that most people probably never heard of. I really enjoyed it and I watch it quite a few times
Rhino and Sandman. They are fittingly best friends in Spectacular Spider-Man.
Plus Church’s performance here is the reason why he was approached to play Sandman.
@@Tesseract.2012 is paul get casted as rhino because his performance here too ? That be wonderful
Love this movie. Jack is the friend that Miles NEEDS. This scene is so great, the general caring that they show for each other mixed in with the hostility. I worked at a golf course for a while and the "f'ers" hitting into us happened every week. Love Jack's response!
My friend was frustrated at the ending of this movie. She wanted to see what happened between miles and maya. I told her that it wasn’t really important, because the real quest was complete. Miles made the effort to see Maya without needing Jack to push him anymore.
This duo was incredible.
There are movies that are masterpieces that I only watch every now and then because I don't want to get sick of them. However, I have watched this masterpiece a ton of times. I can't explain why I can watch it over and over again and never get sick of it.
Finally, a TH-cam recommendation that makes sense.
0:22 - that shot looks like a painting. Just amazing cinematography.
There were California wildfires burning the day this was filmed. It’s smoky air giving richness to the colors.
I love how Jack felt the need to switch clubs before charging at the other golfers.
If you have this movie on DVD or BluRay I strongly recommend watching it with Paul and Thomas' commentary turned on. Smoke a jay and sip some wine as well because it's a whole different experience
I will take you up on that sir
Yeah they're HILARIOUS, especially when they crack on themselves
@@DSMTheEditor Best commentary ever! They sound like they're drunk!
Thomas needs to be in Billions
Loved it when they refer to Virginia Madsen as "bejugged."
Best commentary ever!
Imagine if it was Michael Douglas they shot the ball at...
FIVE!
@Red Dude uh yeah
Five!
“Now you’re gonna die and you’re wearing that silly little hat! How does it feel?”
One of my three favorite movies post 1980. This, unforgiven, and Mr. Hollands opus. They all get better with more watching. Just me. I know it's kind of a weird list.
great list
2 out of 3 ain’t bad
"Whops... look out!" LOL
Happy Birthday to Paul Giamatti
1:00 is what you came for.
Everyone: Two Spiderman Villains.
Me: The exterminator from Over The Hedge and the exterminator from Ant Bully.
I watched this film for the second time last week. the first time I watched it was maybe 10 years ago. With that second viewing it has become one of my favourite films ever.
I dont know why I obsessively watch this film everytime I am in difficult and depressing times in my life. Love watching it especially during late nights. Definitely makes me sleep better too 😂
I think it's because this movie brings a certain kind of comfort because we can relate to Miles.
It’s nice seeing the Rhino and Sandman hanging out on their day off.
This movie is so immensely rewatchable. Every scene is great.
I'd love a friend like Jack.
Paul is our generational actor
Only two people can hit an iron so well that it sounds like a 3 wood.. Tiger and we'll.. evidently Miles.
Happy 57th Birthday to Paul Giamatti 🎂
paul giamatti legend actor
The clips starting from 1:31 had me crackling with the calm jazz music
truly exquisite writing, framing and acting
1:36 That fricking death stare.
Best scene in the movie!!! Hahahahaahahahaha I remember cracking up when I first saw this!!
That's the second best scene in the movie! Hahahahahaha
Yeah! hahaahaha God this movie has such funny scenes!
@@beaujones8790 "I'm not drinking no f***ing Merlot! If somebody orders Merlot, I'm leaving!"....am I right?

Sometimes it takes an external crisis to make bickering buddies pull back together
this movie was so good!!!!!
1:00 Whenever someone at Lucasfilm keeps changing established lore.
This film and The Holdovers are great films about humanity
Agreed and most of Alexander Payne's work is as well
Sandman and Rhino on vacation.
This movie is hilarious.
2:04 would be a good ringtone
I first saw this movie at 20 and immediately identified with Myles. Is that bad? Sad?
It's a great buddy movie. I first saw it when it came out and I was and still am in a great relationship with my wife but Myles and Jack's relationship spoke to me on so many levels. There's a rawness to the film about life's disappointments and it's great to have a friend, no matter how flawed, like Jack who has your back and genuinely loves you like a brother. That's what I tell people who have problems with this movie because they hate what they call the immoral activities that occur. LOL
Sandman and Rhino both put a stop to the film versions of their Spiderman's not that I blame them just a interesting thought.
Why is every scene of this movie brilliant
Seriously everything is so complex and ironic
The guy who says "You can choose to be less hostile" is swinging a club and growling at the end of it...
The guy who can't do anything right, suddenly becomes focused and accomplishes his goal with expertise...
“Don’t you think your negativity is a little premature?”
"Get it reviewed, get it in libraries." 🤣
This is the most accurate depiction of anxiety I have ever seen. I am Miles most days. The paradox is that Miles is lonely and is going through heartbreak after heartbreak. He is extremely depressed and it is making him more lonely and depressed because nobody wants to be around that.
I laughed out loud at this movie. But, this scene... I went to high pitch laugh...
This scene takes on new meaning when you’ve played any golf. 😆
I play on that course pretty often haha
@@StadiumsCenternice course? Public or private?
In that first shot they're actually hitting the tee shot backwards from the hole is actually on. The meltdown happens on hole 7
Rhino and Sandman playing golf
Everything you want to know about Miles is when he says "oh boy". Thats the joke. He couldnt focus - at all - til he did.
Had to check out this clip after I found out about this movie since I golf at this course like every other day. I'll have to watch the whole movie!
"Hurry it up will ya!?"
"Get it in libraries, let the public decide..."
I hear ya Miles. Don't be that guy who literally talks the entire time while you're golfing. Lol
1:01 when customers keep asking about a product
I love how supportive Jack is of Miles' writing (it happens many times in the film.) I think Payne did this deliberately so that we couldn't help but like Jack ...
Good advice ...thanks Thomas
2:06 😂😂😂
Omg Golf monster (sorry just kidding)
whats with the hostility man
1:00 When I see a Raid Shadow Legends sponsor.
No actor living is better at sudden, hilarious meltdowns than Paul Giamatti.
I first watched this moving in a theater that sold dinner at intermission and magnums of red wine during. God damn I was drunk at the end and this movie was awesome... I mean Sandman and The Rhino, getting hammered together on a wine retreat... what's not to like...
I was always surprised by Miles driving the ball at them. He seemed like a timid character who'd just kind of rather not have any trouble
The perfect movie
Great scene.
Why are Sandman & Rhino playing golf? x'D
Sandman and Rhino playing Golf
Masterpiece !
LOL, I love this movie
I like Jack. He is a good friend 🥰
A great buddy movie without guns
how is this not a meme !? xD
Looks like his hostility straightened his swing! Haha
Jack is such a good buddy, Miles was just sour in life
Sandman and rhino are golfing together
Great movie!
1:00 when ever people complain about the new art style of the upcoming season 4 of a show and one person tells him/her to shut up
"You can choose, not to be hostile " 😁😃
Always makes me laugh how confident and positive Jack is, even when the reality is obviously very different.
Miles slices the ball on tee. Jack: ‘Nice’.
Has me In stitches every time.
Absolutely love this movie and I'm not a movie guy.
Nice shot !
