The reason for the butter + hagelslag is very simple:
    A. We alsmost always use butter on bread, regardless of what else we put on it.
    and
    B. It makes the sprinkles stick to the bread so you don't cover yourself in sprinkles when you pick it up to eat.

About your blooper : That lady actually did IMMEDIATLY used the heel command on her dogs the second they walked up to you.
And you are not wrong, everybody i know who has dogs ( and myself and my dog Dex included ) goes to extensive dog training.
Its pretty common to think of people who dont train their dog as anti social assholes in the Netherlands.
This is mostly because we expect a certain level of conformity from each other to not cause problems.
Not training your dog can cause big problems, so yeah, that is heavily frowned upon. Or worse.

I'd be happy to see part 2. For a people who claim to be very direct, myself included, we do seem pretty inept at just ending a phone call (or saying goodbye in general). That being said, I have gotten in trouble with girlfriends in the past for just hanging up, without going through the entire spiel. Depends on your viewpoint, I guess. Also, we Dutch do have some quite crazy celebrity culture as well, if you ask me, but I agree it's nothing compared to American standards. Dog training is serious business in The Netherlands. My dad was involved in dog training in the 70s, before I was born and he told me about the techniques that were developed already back in the day. My parents owned a German Shepard that was too big to become a police dog (shoulder height 70 cm, that dog was a small horse) but boy did that dog need training. He was very sweet for his own people though and my mum being only 1m58 was able to let the dog out at night in the dark all by herself. Her k9 was all the protection she needed haha.
When you do a search you'll find lots of police dogs around the world (also from America) get trained in The Netherlands.

Same in Switzerland, for the opening hours although larger supermarkets tend to be open until 20.00 hours during the week. I had a friend from the US visiting us, and had the same kind of remarks. With a nice sense of humour he sad "well, If I wake up at one o clock at night and might need a screwdriver, I know that the shops are open, and I can buy one" I suppose there are more ways of looking at it, but personally I don't like working at nightshifts or get up at 4 o clock in the morning and I suppose that is also true for people in shops. Its nice if you can have dinner with your childred or bring them to bed. So the basic attitude of 24 hours service in many countries in Europe is " where it is necessary like hospitals, police, its OK" . The other jobs, why kill for a big part of the population there life quality. We know it is very unhealthy also to work at night. Also the weekend or sunday. A big part of community life are still societies, like carnaval, or soccer. When people can share freetime it is more easy to do this kind of activities together. But... its true, you can't buy a screwdriver at 8 PM ;) and you loose some kind of comfort with that.

Edit, watched the vid and yep pretty much the same here in Belgium except for most social aspects which are more toned down here (the congratulations part especially, we don't do that and only give wishes to the person itself). Our northern neighbours have a reputation here for being very outgoing, open, direct, and social. Flemish people tend to keep more to themselves compared to Dutch.

7:39 Fun fact: conscription is still a thing in the Netherlands, it is only temporarily idle. The reason it never got written out of the law is so that the government doesn't need to juggle with it in case of 'emergency'. Just know, now you're a Dutch citizen, until you are 46 years old; you are by law obligated to join the army when they say you should (both men and women)
I'm not sure how this is in America. But if it is different there, this might explain the custom in which we don't reward people for joining the army.

Those business hours are somewhat of a legacy thing. 50 years ago, everything closed on 6PM. Except on Thursday, which had "Koopavond" (Shopping evening), where most shops would close at 9PM. Saturdays, they closed early at 5PM or even earlier. On sundays, nothing was open, except for Horeca, like bars and restaurants.
That legacy is still in place on some parts of the netherlands. You might have experienced it when grocery shopping on Saturdays. Even though grocerystores are mostly open till 9PM, most people still do their groceryshopping on Saturday, even though there's no need for it anymore.

Any country that requires a lots of cannon fodder also requires a hero culture otherwise no body would show up anymore to fight the next silly conflict. The other thing is that, especially in hypocrite countries, there is a big difference between what people say and what people actually do. Yes heroes are praised in the US while at the same time the conservatives recently voted a law down to help those same heroes which is why many of those "heroes" live in the gutters. In the same way heroes are praised on paper but in reality are left to rot US politics is a democracy on paper but in reality a binary system that has little to do with democracy but everything with a fight to divide, you're in or out, you're a friend or foe, you're black or white and there nothing in between. Which is why voting day in the US is so important while here you might end up a little right or left from the centre but no outcome is going to put your life upsidedown.
