Martin’s system is flawed and full of errors. Last season we still made mistakes but the lower quality of the opposition meant that the mistakes didn’t lead to goals conceded. The quality of the Premier League means that the mistakes are being punished and Martin’s inability to change his style of play has led us to this point.
Not sure I’d say he dragged us up last season. We had the 3rd best squad in the league. Ipswich were dragged up with their manager being the difference but I’d have said at the start of last season Leeds and Leicester were the only teams with a better squad than saints. Not saying he did a bad job at all but it wasn’t enough to keep him in a role in such a bad run of form this season, he should have been sacked in the last international break as it was plain to see that we had no chance of improving under Martin this season. I still think we’ll go down as we aren’t good enough, but something had to change if we had any chance and I think that change should have been a month or so ago to give whoever we bring in more of a chance. Not looking good but hopefully we can get a promotion straight back up next season if we keep some of the squad together!
His arrogance last year after Ipswich beat them again saying he'd rather win the "right way" was a sign he'd be too stubborn and proud to change his approach in the PL.
Spot on, all, this playing out from the back by teams who haven’t got the quality of players capable of doing it drives me mad. How many goals week in week out are due to defensive errors 😳
@ Of course he doesn’t, but for some reason every other manager seems to want to copy his idealistic style of playing out from the back, not considering the difference in technical ability of their players compared to his (that said city are a car crash at present).
I think the job Martin did last season was overstated. Southampton were a very good team and well intact compared to Leeds which was also relegated, they should have been consistently winning games, instead they had many bad spells, Southampton's promotion last season was in spite of Martin not because of him.
i knew we’d struggle not only because of the way we play but also in the championship we were defensively poor. we need a more solid and direct approach especially to cement ourselves back in the league. i do believe in our project and the owners are doing a fantastic job investing in the club as a whole but the transfers have unfortunately let us down and been poorly spent. we need a specialist to come in so we can see the results on the pitch.
crazy how that mediocre andelecht manager, then burnley manager with parachute payments who is a failure and got relegated is appointed bayern manager. signing spurs bottlers like kane and dier, infecting a once great football powerhouse with their bottling/small club dna, and is now in their longest trophy drought in decades.
Most managers have no loyalty to clubs so why should the fans towards managers? Martin was clearly playing this style of football for his own gain, not the club, and he'd have jumped ship if a better opportunity came along. So the fans have the right to say what they want
Spot on! And I don't agree he dragged us up, he had one of the best squad's available. Sacked too late though and if the rumours are correct that Dragan wanted RM out earlier, Dragan should sack the danes as well!
Jim , you don’t know our club better than us Southampton fans. We’ve been fed up for a while now. You can’t say the fans are in the wrong for wanting change when we’ve won 1 in 16. We’ve been a predominant premier league club for the last 50 years so yeah our expectations are going to be higher than coming 20th… Of course we’re grateful for what he did in the championship, but that was last season, we can’t hold on to that forever. The tactics didn’t work, Russell Martin’s press conferences didn’t come off well, and ultimately the right decision was made.
Russell Martin looks and sounds like a very arrogant football manager, for him to say he will NOT change the way and style that got them promoted to the PL was always going to lead to sacking. His team kept shooting themselves on their foot, trying to play Championship-style football in the PL with the same players!
You could see last year that Southampton were flawed. They just had a better squad than most of the rest. If Martin didn’t adapt then you knew what would happen and this is not surprising he never had a plan b and then having one of the worse squads is was going to happen.
I really wanted it to work out for him. he’s such a likeable manager and I do think we’ve been unlucky with decisions and he’s been let down by the board but it was unfortunately the right time to go.
Its incredibly disingenuous to say that the fans who wanted Russell Martin gone were hoping they would be losing 5-0 just so he got the sack. They have every right to do that, and i emplore any fansbase who feels the same way to do the same. Stop the gaslighting of them and saying they should have a look at themselves. Every Southampton fan told you this was going to be the case before the season started. Yet when they're proven right, they are told they need to look at themselves. The fans dictate what happens at a club. Its as simple as that.
"The fans dictate what happens at a club. Its as simple as that." Only at clubs that constantly punch beneath their weight. Yeah!! Up the fans eh? Worked well at the likes of Oldham and Scunthorpe. Nothing amazes me more that how much influence some fans think they have. I assume your placards 'got him out' eh? @banbrotam well that's not true because even at top clubs it happens. Take mine for example, Potter.. Pochettino.. Sarri.. but let's not just stop at managerial dismissals you can also look the example with the super league, teams joined then backed down because of fan backlash, ofcourse fans have influence and its arguably on the same level as an owner.. I'm a Chelsea fan so my placcard says we're not in a title race 👍. But to entertain your question, I guarantee he wouldn't have been sacked yet if the fans weren't holding up banners saying to get him out. They were chanting we've got the ball back in one of the games I saw.. I'm amazed he wasn't sacked sooner but the last game was the first I heard of banners asking for him to be sacked in and look what happens..
The two teams with the highest number of passing sequences greater than 10 are City in first and Southampton in second. I think we're just seeing an evolution of the league's meta from attritional possession with slow progression almost all of the time to a more flexible approach, like Slot has taken, which takes game state into account and determines an approach which is linked more directly to what's happening in the game.
Love all these comments from non saints fans. Football is shocking and he wouldn’t change when the players are average and can’t play the way he wanted.
I wonder if managers feel like they want to advertise a style of play rather then doing whatever it takes to keep their team up. Look what happened with Vincent Kompany, his team gets relegated and he's rewarded with a job at a huge team.
Forgein manager (Kompany) did the same. Doesn't get fired and gets the Bayern Munich job. English manager does it and gets fired after 16 games.... And people wonder why we lack English managers!
Yes but it is the levels isn't it. Kompany's Burnley made errors but not at the rate of Southampton so they weren't quite as bad. In addition Burnley smashed the Championship the year before whereas Southampton got promoted via the playoffs. I think this Southampton side under Martin are unfortunately just worst.
@cyrilfoday how do you know that wouldn't have happened for Russel Martin? It would have happened for Kompany either would it if he'd been sacked after 16 games.
Lets be honest, no manager is keeping this Southampton team up so I really don't see the point in sacking Martin. He could of changed to a defensive set up and they could still be beaten almost every week. Route 1 pump the ball long is not a guarantee for survival and really, the players are to blame for making incredibly stupid decisions on the pitch
