Martin’s system is flawed and full of errors. Last season we still made mistakes but the lower quality of the opposition meant that the mistakes didn’t lead to goals conceded. The quality of the Premier League means that the mistakes are being punished and Martin’s inability to change his style of play has led us to this point.

Not sure I’d say he dragged us up last season. We had the 3rd best squad in the league. Ipswich were dragged up with their manager being the difference but I’d have said at the start of last season Leeds and Leicester were the only teams with a better squad than saints. Not saying he did a bad job at all but it wasn’t enough to keep him in a role in such a bad run of form this season, he should have been sacked in the last international break as it was plain to see that we had no chance of improving under Martin this season. I still think we’ll go down as we aren’t good enough, but something had to change if we had any chance and I think that change should have been a month or so ago to give whoever we bring in more of a chance. Not looking good but hopefully we can get a promotion straight back up next season if we keep some of the squad together!

His arrogance last year after Ipswich beat them again saying he'd rather win the "right way" was a sign he'd be too stubborn and proud to change his approach in the PL.

I think the job Martin did last season was overstated. We’ve been fed up for a while now. You can’t say the fans are in the wrong for wanting change when we’ve won 1 in 16.
We’ve been a predominant premier league club for the last 50 years so yeah our expectations are going to be higher than coming 20th…
Of course we’re grateful for what he did in the championship, but that was last season, we can’t hold on to that forever.

Russell Martin looks and sounds like a very arrogant football manager, for him to say he will NOT change the way and style that got them promoted to the PL was always going to lead to sacking. His team kept shooting themselves on their foot, trying to play Championship-style football in the PL with the same players!

Its incredibly disingenuous to say that the fans who wanted Russell Martin gone were hoping they would be losing 5-0 just so he got the sack. They have every right to do that, and i emplore any fansbase who feels the same way to do the same. Stop the gaslighting of them and saying they should have a look at themselves. Every Southampton fan told you this was going to be the case before the season started. Yet when they're proven right, they are told they need to look at themselves. The fans dictate what happens at a club. Its as simple as that.

"The fans dictate what happens at a club. Its as simple as that."
Only at clubs that constantly punch beneath their weight. Yeah!! Up the fans eh? Worked well at the likes of Oldham and Scunthorpe.
Nothing amazes me more that how much influence some fans think they have.
I assume your placards 'got him out' eh? Nothing to do with the owner realising that he had no chance of saving the millions relegation would cost him, if he kept him on, eh?

    • @CJ4YRD
      @CJ4YRD หลายเดือนก่อน

@banbrotam well that's not true because even at top clubs it happens. Take mine for example, Potter.. Pochettino.. Sarri.. but let's not just stop at managerial dismissals you can also look the example with the super league, teams joined then backed down because of fan backlash, ofcourse fans have influence and its arguably on the same level as an owner.. I'm a Chelsea fan so my placcard says we're not in a title race 👍. But to entertain your question, I guarantee he wouldn't have been sacked yet if the fans weren't holding up banners saying to get him out. They were chanting we've got the ball back in one of the games I saw.. I'm amazed he wasn't sacked sooner but the last game was the first I heard of banners asking for him to be sacked in and look what happens..

The two teams with the highest number of passing sequences greater than 10 are City in first and Southampton in second.
I think we're just seeing an evolution of the league's meta from attritional possession with slow progression almost all of the time to a more flexible approach, like Slot has taken, which takes game state into account and determines an approach which is linked more directly to what's happening in the game.

OK, play the way you believe in for the first few games of the season but if it isn't working then change it as much as is necessary to be competitive. In their promotion year their defence was strictly average in goals conceded. How you think you can move to the Premiership without reviewing your methods and have a plan B or C is bad management.

Slowly and surely, managers as a whole are being judged and merited on their 'philosophy'
Whether this has been a thing since the days of Sam Allardyce, Juande Ramos, or even George Graham, it should be a warning for owners to hire managers with just one philosophy. This 'entertaining football' is good on the eye when it works, but when you're not winning games, or better yet, telling your team to pass 50+ times to then get a throw in, you have to reep what you sow. Russell Martin deserves his sacking, like anyone else bottom of a league, but ill put £10 on him getting a 'big club' job, like AC Milan, or even a top 6 club, because of his 'philosophy' and not his tactical awareness of managing a game when your plan A doesnt work.

These selfish managers dont care about the clubs they're managing. They only care about their own managing career. They will stick to their fancy style of play, playing from the back. Knowing the team they're managing aren't good enough to do it. They will get the sack and get a better job somewhere else. Kompany from Burnley to Bayern was a prime example. He stuck with his style of play got Burnley relegated with his stubborn style of play and now hes at bayern with no care for what he did for Burnley only looking out for himself.
You have to select a style of play that suits your players not the other way round. Southampton players are not good enough for Martins style of play! If he changed it then maybe he'd still have a job and possibly keep Southampton in the prem.
