Good review really appreciate it still debating which sander to get. I used to own a 4 x 24” Makita sander and it was 11 AM beast, that’s exactly the word I used for that machine and I heard you use the same word for your Bauer machine. I have been working with wood and power tools all my life I am almost 70 years old and I can honestly say the Makita 4” x 24” sander is the best power tool I have ever owned hands-down. Never seen anything like that machine. If you have the money and you wanna get a belt sander Makita is the only one I would recommend. Absolute joy to operate.

The problem that I've had with my Bauer 4 x 24 belt sander is that the electrical cord going to it is very cheap and will get worn to the bare wires a few inches from where it connects to sander. I had been sanding some rough cut oak and after about 4 months I noticed that it was worn to the bare wires and stopped working. I debated about getting a more expensive sander like a Makita versus just getting another Bauer. I bought another Bauer since Harbor Freight has them in stock and I thought that I would just keep an eye out for any wear on the cord, but when I'm sanding I'm usually looking at the area that I'm sanding and not the cord. Well, my second Bauer stopped working and when I was looking at it I noticed that the cord was worn to the bare wire again. This never happened with my 3 x 18 belt sanders, so I don't think it's poor technique. I'm glad I didn't get electrocuted.

Is it possible to replace the cord? I have had to do that on other power tools. I’m sorry they didn’t work well for you.

Respectfully, I don't understand why people- esp seasoned Diyers or even professional contractors- don't know that breathing in sawdust does permanent damage to your body. Both you and the dog were breathing in toxic sawdust. At minimum just wear a dust mask and the dog should have not been near you working at all...his eyes were likely getting sawdust in them as well as his lungs. You might feel okay afterward but repeated exposure to toxins does damage on a cellular level. There are all sorts of health problems caused by inhaling sawdust from asthma to lung cancer. It is not only the wood that is the issue but the chemicals within the wood as well and working outside does not protect a person although it is better than working inside. Wood dust is just one of many substances from paint particles and paint and glue fumes to granite dust to drywall dust that causes any number of health issues including cancer.

Actually these belt sanders do not have a tensioner but they do have a belt tracking adjustment. Anytime you change the belt you need to eyeball the belt on the rollers to make sure you’re rolling in the proper location
