Hi Dawn, I love you & your videos! Thank you so much for helping me on my downsizing journey! You're always so upbeat and your videos are so clear with just enough details to be a great guide. Also, fyi, I can't get the Free Virtual Conference link to work. I tried several links on this page & your FB page & always get this message: "This site can't be reached." Thanks for any help getting to the right page.

Dawn another paper hack is to take a picture of the flyer, wedding invitation, or any document that just need the information. Then the paper can be recycled. I find that having the picture of the information I need is a great way to always have it when I need it. Then when the event has past the photo can just be deleted.

Everyone that is struggling don’t worry about the title minimalist . Just think that you will be a more cleaner and more organized person . I used to be a hot mess . I decluttered 75% of my stuff as that was stuff I was not using 6 years ago . Now I declutter quickly . Having sooo much stuff only is stressful and you will not miss it . I honestly don’t remember 95% of the stuff I got rid of .
If you can’t let it go definitely have that time will tell as it helps you truly see you did not need it

Dawn, we love you because you are SO REAL. You are my friend next door. You never make it all look like a perfect process, you show us the obstacles, the real world, practical solutions. I stumbled across and IG post the other day where the header was “You don’t need a bunch of fancy organizing products and perfect drawers with high end gadgets” and then she proceeded to fill the drawer with a bunch of bamboo organizers that fit the drawer perfectly and filled it with all her fancy new kitchen tools. What?! I’m out. You show us the real deal- a repurposed Gladware container here, a Dollar Store bin there and a process- not once and done. Well done!

I have always had "stuff" but when I was my parents' caregivers at night and weekends and still working a 40 hour job, my house became a disaster area. My parents have moved to their heavenly home now and I have been following your channel for awhile. The comment you said to ask, "do I want to maintain my inventory " has been the most helpful of any advice I have ever heard. I am slowly getting rid of stuff! For those out there who need to organize a dorm room, we found that using packing cubes for socks, shorts, undies, tank tops, dental, eyecare are a really helpful item. When unpacking at the dorm, leave these items in packing cubes and put in drawers or shelves. That way when the student returns home you can lift them from drawers into suitcases. Also, the ones that look like small boxes ( shorter than cubes and more rectangular) can work the same. Wish we knew this a few years ago. College students and assisted living folks really live minamally or they are just unable to manage it. Also, use a wagon (sports one) and large luggage with wheels to haul stuff in dorm. So much easier than carrying it all in.

I’ve discovered that the feeling of a welcoming home is not one that necessarily is filled with all the trendy things, but one that is cleared out so that people feel like THEY are what you have room for; not a bunch of stuff that leaves no room for the people.

Good point about how you still have everything you need! When I look at Dawn's home, I don't see lack; I see an abundance of peace! I don't think she's extreme at all. You said Ironically you all still have everything you need in your minimalist home. I have a favorite small hardware store (Ace) and the reason I love it is because even though its like an eighth of the size of the Home Depot stores, they always have exactly what I need and they know exactly where it is. As far a hardware stuff goes. Now, they don't have room size rugs and chandeliers or bathroom sinks. But thats not what Im looking for when I need small home repair type things. I need to make my home more like Ace than Home Depot.

Thank you, Dawn! You are so right about toys! I had a small toy box of toys when I was little. My favorite toys were my Lincoln Logs, my little plastic farm animals, and my swing. I loved building with the Lincoln Logs. I used to take my plastic farm animals into the grass. I would take sticks and make fences for them. I had a huge homemade swing with pipes and heavy chains and a wooden seat. I could swing so high! As I got older, I loved jacks. Children don't need a lot of toys.

Empowering your kids to be responsible for donations is a great and time saving idea. I also agree that categorising and creating boundaries is the key and also encouraging yourself and others to leave some spaces empty or not completely full is also beneficial.
A good mantra or poem to teach kids is “Toss the waste, Make a space, Have a place, If not donate.”

I love, love LOVE the "make your own drawers" hack and have been doing it for years. We have a fairly new home and they put one of those pantry cabinets in the kitchen and a tower cabinet in the bathroom and the plastic bins have been a godsend in both. Since we don't plan to move again (spent almost 20 years o the move in the military) I have gotten attractive ones that match. It was worth the extra bit of money to get the nicer ones, but I also like the fact that they can be wiped out if any debris gets into the bottom. I also love making the boundaries the bad guy, as you have mentioned in previous videos. I only have so much storage space, so that limits what I can keep. We've even carried this system out to our garage and it has helped tremendously!

Hi Dawn, I think it is a real challenge to do what I call 2.0 videos or "what's next?" after de-cluttering, but you hit it out of the park with this one. Constant reminders on why we went thru all of this in the first place and then the absolute joy in seeing what happens next. I am as inspired by this type of video as I am the actual original de-cluttering and I think I speak for more than myself. While I think the original de-cluttering videos (getting rid of 85% are important to see in the beginning) are encouraging NOW the idea becomes how to maintain and fine tune the rest. It may not seem as dramatic, but reassessing and "tweaking" are a skill too. You did great on this one! Thanks.

Another clothing challenge is to hang all your clothes with the hook turning the wrong direction. After ever laundry cycle place clothing back up facing the correct direction. After a few months you can see all the wrong facing items that we are not using. It makes donating those items a lot easier.

Thank you for another wonderful video; “The Best of Dawn”! 😂 I wanted to tell you something that happened just this afternoon. My husband is (finally!) on board with simplifying our small home. He even went through many of his clothes this weekend and gave up several coffee cups, which are overflowing out of the cabinet. I’ve tried to be careful to not “make” him give his things up and I so appreciate your wisdom with this advice. But, I digress! What happened this afternoon was actually two things. 1. For CHristmas, someone sent me a whole AMAZON BOX of tea that I hated. I’ve kept it around, feeling guilty about getting rid of it. Today I decided it had to go. I started to take the time to open each box and take the tea out in order to recycle the boxes. Then I remembered what you said, giving us all permission to pitch the whole thing at this point. Later we can work on recycling (which we normally do). All those little boxes full of nasty tear went into our garbage bag. Winning! 2. We had a jar of dog treats from our two dogs that were about twice the size of our current little rescue. Those two larger dogs passed TWO YEARS ago and our sweet little mix doesn’t even like those treats. Oh, also, the lid broke on the jar since I moved it to the floor. We finally decided to let the treats go today. Yes, into the trash. My poor husband took them out one or two at a time to put into the trash. Then, you came into my mind and I said, “you’re going to hate me, but let’s just throw the whole jar away!”. My husband was more than happy to do that and didn’t hate me at all. 😉 Next, I’m working on simplifying my posts! Sorry for the length, but wanted you to know how you’ve impacted our home. Thank you, again!

Also, with dorm rooms, if you hang a mesh laundry basket on a towel rack, doorknob or wardrobe pull, it gets it off the horizontal space ..the floor. Also, shelf risers on back of desk gives more shelving. Turning cubes sideways can store food on top shelf of desk for quick access and on a horizontal mostly unused space.

I can’t tell you how much your videos have helped me declutter and actually want *less* stuff to manage in my apartment. I have a husband and four young children (8 and under). Your tips and just positive attitude have helped make the process so much more enjoyable. Big fan girl of Dana as well. Love you so much 💕

Dawn i am so grateful for you and your messaging. I'm a substitute teacher and decided to really tackle the clutter in my home this summer. It is certainly a work on progress but I'm beginning to feel the benefits. Also, I know you worry about how to send your message differently for everyone to "get it". Just keep doing what you're doing! You're amazing!!!
P.s. I love that you and Cass quote each other 😊

I like you the best out of all the decluttering mentors.🦓You stand out in the crowd (in a good way) I will say that imagination is a wonderful thing to keep young minds healthy but kids still do need some toys. My sister and I barely had any toys when we were kids. My husband thinks that I am strange because I will stop to look at toys in the shops. Seems I am yearning for toys as an adult because I didn't have them as a kid.

Aw, I hope you buy yourself a toy once in awhile. I know that’s a strange thing to say in a discussion about minimalism but it sounds like something you have really missed and that would make you happy, even if temporarily. Keep a small amount and then you can always donate it later but do buy yourself a toy 🧸

The time-will-tell bin has helped me a lot. City news magazine that I should read but never do, union newsletter that I should read but never do etc etc. Well, if I decide to read it I'll pull it out of the time-will-tell bin. I've even put in a few flattish objects in there: it seems a good a place as any to store for a few months until I know they are safe to check.

My husband and I decided to go through our clothes this weekend. He literally filled two garbage bags full, within 30 minutes. Didn't try anything on, just started chucking. So proud of him.
Me on the other hand, I want to put it on and see how it looks, now that I'm post-baby far enough to not wear maternity or blame "the baby weight". But I still found myself keeping tighter fitting items that I didn't feel great in, and had to adjust. I found that when I would put on the flowy top that didn't require me to suck in or wear "non-muffin top pants", those are my favorite. Those are my go-to. Those are the ones I don't question and end up passing over. Those are the ones I should give closet real estate to, and let someone else enjoy the clothes that don't flatter me.
When it comes to duplicates, we had family over and my aunt needed a bigger serving bowl but I only had 2 and they had been used. My mother in law was like "oh, you should get more bowls." I said "Why? We don't host often enough to need them." And it's the truth. She has a huge drawer of serving spoons & such, and a cabinet full of serve-ware and Tupperware. 1. I don't want to store it all. 2. I am really not the hosting type, so if I don't cater to that, we're less likely to have it at my house. LOL!

Now when I want to buy something I just put the money in a buy for later bank account. Lo and behold I went on vacation using that money. The house feels lighter and I have reduced my stress tremendously. Go for it. It’s worth it.

100% with you on the toy thing! Not because I've ever read any research, but purely because I have watched my four kids over the past 14.5 years. We keep only a small number of imaginative toys (like good quality building blocks, open ended Lego, costume bin, etc), because those are the only things they gravitated to, even in the sea of toys they've been given through the years.

The thing about kids 100%! And I have wanted to have old fashioned wood toys and cotton dolls for my kids and I just realized it's a really good idea even for their health! Reducing the plastic toys in your house reduces the chemical exposure for your kids!!
Also a little boy I knew had a huge playroom full of toys and it gave me anxiety so I tidied it all up and put it in containers and he came in and it was like he thought that was wrong and on purpose messed it all up again. He had way too many toys

As a teenager I used to be super organized, neat and tidy. I was proud of my bedroom. Then trauma happened and I totally lost my mind, and my organization. I'm now 57 and a new grama. My catch phrase for this time in my life is "taking back purple". Which means, getting back my "good" clean, organized habits and making my house a home to be proud of. I know this will be a journey, but well worth it. I'm considering making a personal blog, so that next birthday I can see how far I've come.

My latest home hack is eating minimalist. I’m basically eating carnivore now. I was vegan for 4 years, keto for about 13 months, and now I pretty much eat beef and eggs. My grocery shopping is so minimal and easy! I don’t have to stress about food shopping at all anymore. I’ve been on this food experimentation journey to lose weight and feel better. I didn’t think about how eating this way would also impact my minimalist journey. I can’t believe how much I love the side benefits of minimal shopping, food prep, storage, containers, and gadgets. Eating minimally is my best minimalist hack ever. (p.s. I’ve lost 65 pounds so far, am almost never hungry, and feel amazing). Thanks for your videos. I watch all the time and have learned a lot from you! Love from Iowa ❤️

Oh my goodness-duplicates! My kitchen has this problem haha. I’ve been watching and learning, BUT, just realized I have duplicate and triplicate or more more of things- cooking utensils measuring spoons and cups etc. I even bought cute little baskets for all the “extra” stuff! I guess I’ll have some extra baskets and empty spots on the shelves because you’re absolutely right, I don’t need the 10! Yes 10! Spatulas I’m housing right now, or the “extra” measuring spoons that don’t even make a complete set! I’m so glad I feel like I’ve got the “ok” to throw them out or give them away 😂

I just visited my parents and they had clutter on almost every surface. They are elderly so I was trying to help with basic cleaning and that kind of thing. Moving stacks of things just to dust a shelf properly sucked my motivation and energy and made even simple tasks so much harder! I still have way too much stuff but I was shocked at the peace and relief I felt when I came home to (mostly) clear surfaces and a tidier space. I was decluttering along with unpacking when I got home.

What I'm doing with those is going through and finding the ones that I can download online. That way I can toss out the paper copies. And the ones that I can't find, then I can use office lens or my scanner to digitize!
