Most teachers will tell male students to not use fukusa when removing the lid unless the lid and the knob on the lid is made of the same material. It is also a matter of getting used to it, and it is easier to learn to accept the heat in usucha as you get to touch a damp chakin as soon as you have moved the lid ;) Many people agree with you that it is hard to do, and always use fukusa when removing the lid. My preference is for not using it.

ありがとうございました。きれいなお点前ですね。一つ気になるところがあります。釜の蓋を開けるときは、袱紗を蓋の上においてから開けると思います。蓋が熱くて持ちにくいと思います。蓋を取ったあと、袱紗はそのまま 建水下へ置くと思います。

男性の場合は袱紗を用いずに（素手で）蓋を開けます。確かに熱いですが持てない熱さではありません。
