I got the 3/8 and am very impressed with it. And my tektons have also been great so I'm glad you have enjoyed them as well. Thank you for commenting your thoughts.
@@TonyTheTechnician you bet BIG T... I bought the Olsa 3/8" last night...it'll be here tomorrow...LET'S GO 🏁 I went ahead and bought it right after this video lol....
I’m an auto body tech and I do a lot of mechanical work as well, I’ve been using the titan set everyday for roughly the last year and they have worked great, haven’t had a single problem so far. They do go on sale for lower than that, I got mine for a lil cheaper I believe.. 13:00
Thanks Tony. If you pick up the Olsa ratchet, please consider doing an un-boxing and review of the ratchet. It would be nice to see it close up, maybe a quick demo, as well as your initial thoughts on the quality and feel.
I have the SATA 3 piece set you referenced here, the non 120. I could not pass it by given the price under $30. While I am happy with the purchase, there is a quality issue. There is a LOT of slop in the ratchet. I initially thought they were basically the same as Gearwrench, but they are not. It seems like the gear mechanism is slightly undersized for the ratchet body. Good for the price, but lacking a lot in quality.
Hahaha right!! They have came down some now 👍🤣 I was like who is paying literally double the price for the same ratchet but with a different handle. That price difference didn't make any sense
Always had good luck with Gearwrench so I recently picked up the 2 Piece 84 Tooth Locking Flex Head Teardrop Ratchet set. The locking switch itself feels kinda iffy but once locked in position, it feels solid. And for $57 bucks why not?! I like my 120XP set but the 84 and 90 tooth versions are solid too. Haven't had the need for a repair kit but it's available for $15 bucks. The Olsa ratchets looks nice but I absolutely hate the little hex screws. Got a few Matco and Snap On ratchets with missing screws and I don't even bother with them anymore.
Ya I have had good experiences with all of the gw ratchets so far and really enjoy then. I actually prefer the screws over snap rings. The backing plates on the gw are sealed ok at best compared to most screw on plates. I haven't lost any screws but usually put a drop of blue locktite on them. Either design is fine by me as long as it's a solid ratchet 👍
I bought the 24” Olsa ratchet. Didn’t feel good about the price but like you mentioned compared to other USA brands it’s not that expensive. I specifically bought it to turn cranks over at work for timing jobs but I haven’t needed it just yet but it does feel good in hand. I just wish Olsa got USA stamped anywhere on the ratchet. SK put it right on the head but Olsa opted to put their logo there instead.
Check out the Astro tools nano ratchet 3/8 long handle. Hovers between $20-25 and is a 3/8" drive in a 1/4" body with a long handle. Got one when setting up a new tool cart for a test stand at work and liked it so much I bought myself one for my box at home. I also agree those gearwrench 120xp's are really nice and the compact head 90 tooth 3/8" set is nice too, super low profile. I'll also add my least favorite ratchet to use that I own is the DeWalt pear handles. They came in a big socket set at a great price that's performed well but good God the ratchets are chunky, heavy, massive and just unwieldy. Nice ratchet mechanism, but the head is huge and the handle alone weighs more than most other ratchets I own.
Very nice thanks for sharing and ya I like those gw ratchets as well. Haha ya I bought the Dewalt 192 pc set like 7 years ago and I absolutely love that set but those ratchets are ridiculously heavy. While I never had any issues with them as far as quality and operation. I felt like I was using a 2 lb hammer lol. I eventually sold the ratchets but was extremely surprised by the quality of that socket set
The three piece Sata looks good at that price. I’m considering it just to add to my collection. I assume it’s just a touch different from the Husky/apex with maybe the shape/knurling added
How are they with their warranty and service? I've heard good things about the product but it will really suck if one breaks and they will not repair or replace it.
I also have a set of the ares 90 tooth. Regular handle. Used the 3/8 once but didnt like it much. The Sata were even better. My Olsa ratchets are amazing! Pricy but worth it.
Been looking at the 120xp comfort grip 3/8 & 1/4 on AcmeTools but had no idea Amazon had a 4pc noncomfot grip set. I'll probably pick this set up instead
Careful guys I ordered the $102 dollar set and in the main description it says 120xp but farther down it says 84 tooth. I took the chance and it is the 84 not 120xp. Just got them in two days ago debating on whether to keep them or not.
@Purplestang47 wow usually Amazon is good about making sure that is right and while I wouldn't be afraid of the 84t ratchets I would be upset if I was expecting the 120xp.
The Titan's are identical to O'Riley's auto parts Power Torque brand of ratchets. The Power Torque's are 100 tooth though, decent ratchets for the price.
The locking flex head types, are those generally more likely to break than a plain non quick release type? Trying to decide between the plain 90 tooth gearwrench & the 84 tooth locking flex set. Would you even notice the difference between 84 tooth & 90 tooth? Or are the 84 tooth flex heads more bulky?
I've never had an issue with either 90 or 84 tooth ratchet and while the flex head does make that a weak point in the ratchet it still makes the ratchet way more versatile. And as long as your not using a 2 foot pipe on the end then you should be just fine
With so many cordless tools available - impact wrenches, drivers, ratchets - do you use the hand ratchet often? I’m a diyer and I find myself reaching for a cordless ratchet majority of the time. Thank you.
I've heard the tool truck guys will fix the Gearwrench stuff for you under the warranty. Can anyone confirm if this is true? This would save me a bunch of time because I live in a rural area. A Snap On guy comes to the shops in the area which are a lot closer to home than driving into town to get to the big box stores or a hardware store.
From what I've read, the SATA versions of the ratchets have a lot looser tollerances compared to GW, granted I wouldn't buy either because I loathe Apex tool group. For the Titan and Ares Pearheads, I have the Titan 3/8" and I will say, they're aweful, it constantly locks up to the point I can't switch directions until I hit the head on the ground, the look is about all it has going for it. For the Olsas, I think if I'm gonna be spending that much money, it's gonna be for some tool truck ratchets and not some SK selloffs.
@Callelle thank you for sharing your thoughts on them. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the ares. And I don't know that the tolerances for sata are all that different and more of a difference in internals. Someone used to a 90t gearwrench would probably think a sata 72t has looser tolerances. But then again. When it comes to apex it is always best to get hands on bc sometimes you get a great product and sometimes well you don't lol. The one product I have never liked are the ratcheting wrenches just bc they are very inconsistent you have great sets and absolutely horrible sets and no way of knowing what you are getting. So if anything they need to stop having things made in 100 different factories. Move all the products to like a handful of places and double up on QC. Bc when you get a good Tool it's usually fantastic which for me is about 85% of the time bc I'm very picky when buying. But the 1 or 2 bad tools can absolutely ruin it for many people. Nobody wants to worry about that and they shouldn't have too. So hopefully we see some improvement in the future with the recent changes being made. But we will see.
@@TonyTheTechnician Gearwrench's ratchet wrenches are the first big thing that burned me on the Apex tool company. All of my flex head ratchet wrenches are floppy no matter how much I tighten the screw, and the heads are broached VERY inconstantly. I also have GW stubby ratchet wrenches and they always feel grindy, like they're packed with sand. I plan on replacing them all with either Icons or Mac Precision torques (If I feel like being spendy).
I can never understand the 120XP haters. It's like they've never used them. It's that or they just can't handle a brand other than their preferred made a great design too. I'm Dual 80 at work but 120XP at home and I'd use them at work too.
