- B58? Check. ZF8? Check. Rear-biased AWD? Check. At today's used prices, the F22 M240i xDrive might be the performance bargain no one's talking about.

There are ways to address the issues in the shortcoming in the steering. M lower control arms will give you two degrees of negative camber (for better turn in) and replacing the hydraulic bushing on the forward thrust arm with a poly bushing, takes most of the (intentionally engineered) "slop" out of the steering. I am very pleased with the results I achieved from these modifications and always encourage every F22 chassis M240 owner I encounter, to also undertake them. (not even that expensive)
As you correctly identified, the steering input is by far the biggest performance shortcoming of the car. BMW wants to sell M2's. This car is an M2 that went to college and got married but still knows how to party.
This thing looks INSANELY good
especially compared to the new stuff lol
@@Rockit181 Amen. The new stuff looks like someone botched their cosmetic surgery..
all hail the glorious B58
Your reviews are extremely helpful. Thanks!
Great review! I just purchased a pristine 2017 version and love it!
I just bought a 2018 m240 x drive and it’s incredible. It replaced an e90 M3. The m240 is much more drivable on a day to day basis and wow is it fast when you punch on it. Good video.
Seems like some suspension geometry changes to the front end could really help with front end grip and feel. Adding some caster and camber can work wonders, maybe some new coilovers while your in there. I would do that, after market exhaust and maybe a tune would really make a big improvement. If you do it right and don't go to extreme with those modifications it could still have great driveability with minimal impact to reliability.
It amazing how some minor adjustments can make a good car into a great drivers car.
Great review. Please do one for a used F80 M3.
Going to look at some tomorrow.
Really love the yellow. Mine is grey, it's low-key, but i could use some bright colors to cheer me up.
2017 M2 owner here. Agree with all the statements you made.
Thanks for the video. I bought mine a year ago for 34K with 24k miles and I love it. I don't have X-Drive and still don't know if I should have looked for an AWD model. Overall very happy with the vehicle.
I find all wheel drive beemers weird lol
Had an M240xi for a few years that I recently sold. Was a great car overall for the money. I modified it a little too much to be a truly comfortable daily and ultimately found it not engaging enough to keep as a weekend car. This video does make me miss it a little though!
Same. I had a 235i and it was cool but upgraded to a M2 Comp now. I think the 2 series is the best BMW you can get when it comes to the F series models.
I also had a M235i X-Drive. Sold it for a Tacoma TRD Pro and now also have an M2C. "Wife's M2C"
@@USMC_LAterZwe all know it’s yours 😂😉
my mom (52) is about to buy one. she used to race for a living and wants something sexy and quick. do you think this is a good daily driver for an older woman?
And now you bought a Porsche GT3 with the money of your parents
wish it came with the sport lsd but if u can go and have BMW add one for like 2k its fine ig
My future car. I plan to sell my 2016 Genesis Coupe 3.8 someday and buy an M240i. Everyone is sleeping on this car. It is a Supra with rear seats.
Not many are sleeping on this car-if you can get past it not coming with a limited slip diff and always being in the shadow of an actual m2, you’ll enjoy it.
@@Barbwire710I own this car and not having a limited slip diff is just stupid on BMW'S part! Nice part of the M240i is all the different combinations they offer with x drive, and stick shift! Car is fun as hell for the money imo!
Had no idea these came in xDrive, enticing
i love my 240, that yellow is sick
Its super frustrating how big of a premium the manual transmission brings on these. The price increase on the used market brings them into the same ballpark as manual ttrs or cheaper f8x cars…
Like the color scheme the owner went with and the matching OG CA plate! Wonder if this 1st gen B58 is overrated(hp) like the 2019 Supra..
You mean underrated? Probably is.
@@Zygrene haha, yea.. Underrated. Lexdysia kicked in ;)
No manual option tho right? Why do they make it so hard to get a manual B58 XDrive?
3,650 pounds in this generation with xdrive! Great review!
just got 1. i'm so excited. now i have to learn to drive this thing. 😅
In the UK we don't get the x drive option. All other European countries do though
I've driven the M240i xDrive, M240i RWD 6 Speed, M2 LCI and M2 Comp. I would say if you don't track the M240i xDrive is an amazing daily driver. It does fall apart on the track and is not meant for 10/10 driving. It needs better brakes and brake fluid to handle the track, along with better steering feel, but that's where the price difference of the M2's come in. I personally didn't enjoy the m240i rwd 6 speed, the suspension felt too floaty.
M240i seems better with the 8speed auto
M240 sdrive and xdrive should have same suspension.
Did one of yours had adaptive and the other passive suspension maybe ?
Sport plus is far from floaty, so I guess it's safe to say you didn't have the adaptive suspension!
You right for the brakes and front end. I just upgraded my m240ix to m2 front brakes, hybrid turbo and stage 2+ bm3, i just need totake care of the camber.
Great video man! Curious though - you said the 2015 M235i was pretty underwhelming and was a 7/10th cars and those are mechanically identical besides the addition of the B58 (and of course xdrive). People say the Supra is more involving than even the M2 and then M2 is supposedly far more involving than this. Does the xDrive actually make it better overall? Or did you just have lower expectations for this one? I'm looking at manual ones so the trans tuning doesn't matter to me.
Besides the lackluster engine/trans/steering, I wasn't a fan of the M235i RWD because of the open diff. It doesn't really want to slide. At least with xDrive, the 40i feels controllable.
@Zygrene hey man thanks for these vids, great content! I understood the same sentiment in your m235i video so I'm interested in your opinion on which choice you would go with:
Comfy daily driver ie Lexus Is250 and then a non compromised sports car as a second car, specifically 350z/370z or only one car and its a compromised sports "sedan" M235i, M240i, M440i?
The yellow is 🔥
Love your videos. I have a 2014 M235i, I love it as an all around car. Can you test something similar ?
I reviewed an older M235i not long ago
@@Zygrene you were much harsher but the only difference is the awd and the engine has 10 extra hp or so
@@mecheng1977it was my 2016 M235i. I honestly believe Fenton driving a Supra, Porsche Cayman GTS and an M2 all B2B just BEFORE driving the M235i had an impact on the review (and reason for being harsh on it).
I myself went and test drove an M2C and then went back into my M235i and felt much less pleased with it initially. It is a great car for what it is.
How does the 240i compare to a fk8 type r???
Is the AWD needed and worth the extra money and weight? On bigger cars I can see the appeal, but surely any RWD 2 series is just fine? Fit an LSD and traction/handling won't be an issue.
In terms of value for money though, any used B58 engined car is quite desirable imo. Such a strong, refined and reliable engine. Can get 500hp on those stock engines with just a remap and 3 inch downpipe. I've always found the Audi S models (like the S3) to be a bit meh tbh.
It's also good to see a yellow BMW, because 99% of the ones I see are blue/silver/grey/white/black.
A manual RWD m240i fitted with an LSD would be a great car. For FR layout with over 200hp, I consider an LSD to be absolutely necessary.
I wonder how it compared to your brz. M240 is actually the car i was thinking to switching to from my 22 brz after hearing about all the engine troubles. Seeing how they cost about the same
I traded my 6mt M240 for a 6speed 23’ BRZ. Not my brightest moment after hearing about the engine issues with our BRZs, lol.
@@Barbwire710loll it’s okay buddy. Still nice car. Hope you don’t take hard right turns.
Modern day Evo XI ?
Nah
If you can live with a small car then this is amazing value
Tune it in E85 and there's alot of power to tap into
Power is much more linear and feels like it pulls harder up top then the older N55 M235i.
Yeah, the B58 is far superior to the N55 imo
If this thing came in a manual it's pretty much a modern Skyline GTR
it did come in manual lol
@@rg0 Not in xdrive. Only rwd
Seems like BMW didn't get the performance power to weight ration memo. Call me a dreamer, but I can only imagine what the M240i xDrive could do if it dropped 500 lb. Kind makes me drool just thinking about it.
I got a rwd ‘20 m240i and I call it the poor man’s Supra 😅
When you want a Supra but you also need rear child seats :(
Baby gtr?
bargain?
Great buy at around 48k new including destination charge!
it’s not 3800 lbs 😂 it’s 3500
these are cheap used for a reason. most people either mod them to shit, or drive the hell out of them. good luck on maintenance. if you can somehow find one in amazing shape, yes its a good deal
They're actually pretty good mechanically. The B series engines are practically bulletproof and the ZF boxes are also stout. Just look out for coolant leaks and that's about it.
B58 is a great engine. Rest of the car is a car crash.
Chassis is awful, can’t handle the power let alone remapped. Suspension geometry is shocking and the car squirms under power because the rear subframe is mount on massive rubber bushes. It’s so unpredictable and handling is awful.
For the 200kg penalty, I don't think the XDrive is worth it if you don't live in a snow in winter area.
I'd rather have a lighter RWD car with this chassis.
Also put a mechanical Quaife or Wavetrac LSD on these things and they reallh come alive.
