  • Comparing Arches Hot Pressed (HP) vs Cold Pressed (CP/NOT) watercolor/ watercolour paper in this weeks art video at The Art Hive plus beagle (dog) illustration.
    Hello lovely people! How are you all? Have you ever wondered what the differences are between (Arches) watercolour papers? Well, I've (hopefully!) answered some questions you may have had about hot pressed and cold pressed paper in this weeks video and I've used two simple illustrations of two identical beagle dogs to compare the differences as I go through the painting process. I hope you enjoy it but if I've missed anything out or you have a question or a comment then please leave it in the box below. I will reply!
    Which paper do you prefer and what types of drawings/ paintings do you do?

    you make the suggestion for beginners to start with cheap paper while they are learning, i couldn’t disagree more. Artist grade paper is cotton and is treated to control absorbency, this allows the beautiful flow of water and pigment so characteristic of watercolor. I recommend my students to buy one full size (22 x 30 ") sheet of cold press, 140 lb. cotton paper, cutting it into six or eight smaller sheets, both sides are useable. They will learn alot more about watercolor for the $5-10 than with all the cheap paper in the world

      What kind of paper in the 22 x 30 sheet do you recommend?

      @@saramoyer5712 Hi! If you are a beginner, I would recommend starting with cold pressed as its a bit more forgiving and easier to work than hot pressed. It also takes longer to dry and so gives you as bit more time to work on it than hot pressed. However, it does depend a bit on what sort of texture you re going for and whether or not you want to use fine liners or coloured pencils on top as, in this case, hot pressed paper would give a smoother result. Hope this helps. Sarah 😊

      sara moyer - i agree that cold pressed watercolor paper is preferable for beginners. Brands vary in their ‘sizing’ techniques, most watercolorist use Arches as it handles water really well.
      Many good brands are available at lower prices. As long as it cotton, they all work well; pick one and stick with it while developing your skills.

    I got cold pressed paper and it’s so rough! Coming from non-cotton paper, it was much harder to tell when it was dry, and that was a little annoying. My liner pens look grainy on the paper, and that’s something I don’t like.
    What I do enjoy is the ability to layer paint over and over-with my old paper, I had to start with the darkest, most saturated areas because once paint was on a section, it wouldn’t absorb any more and just start to come off.

    Greetings, that was MOST helpful. I invested in a large Arches cold pressed pad recently and am seriously considering trying hot pressed. That 20 X 20 cms looks an ideal size. It certainly does make a difference to the quality of the painting, I've learned that a bit late. Thanks a mill for your tutorial. 👍🖌

      Thank you John! You are very welcome. The 20 x 20cm size paper is a good investment I think if you wanted to try hot pressed paper. Take care 🙂

    I really enjoyed this thorough comparison. I prefer hot pressed Arches watercolor paper for botanical illustration (I am a novice) and colored pencil. I use the cold press Arches for pan and tube watercolor.

      Thank you for your comment! Its really great to hear which paper type other artists use for different media. 😀🎨

    Damn.... I prefer the hot press paper, but i just bought the cold one😥
    Edit : congrat for a new sub😊!

      Hi!- Thank you for the sub! I tend to swap between cold and hot press paper depending on what I'm painting/ drawing and what effect I'm after - both are good! 😊

    You ever tried painting on the backside it has less texture. Why is it that Arches 140 Lbs hot press paper is not as heavy and it is not as thick as Arches 140 Lbs cold press paper.

    I have a question and it's very late I'm asking, I know, I'm very sorry, but I am looking into getting the Arches cold pressed paper as I am a cold pressed fan, haha, and I would love something 100% cotton. However in the video I have a bit difficulty seeing if the Arches cold pressed paper is completely white or does it have a creamy color? Because I prefer completely white paper, and I can only order Arches online here, it's not possible to actually look at it in a store. Thank you in advance and I'm sorry my question is so late and so stupid, haha XD

      ChocolateIceCreamLove it’s not a stupid question and it’s never to late to ask! The arches paper is not completely white but Fabriano artistico cold pressed paper is 100% cotton and comes as extra white I think. It is slightly different to paint on and I find paint lifts off the surface more than with arches but it’s another option you might consider? Hope this helps 😊

    Which is best for portrait painting HP or CP

    • @SarahNewburyArt
      @SarahNewburyArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Sanketh! I think it depends on the medium you're using and what sort of effect you're going for. Personally, I'd use HP for coloured pencil or watercolour which will give you a nice smoooth finish but I also like CP with watercolour too, as it dries slower, gives you more blending time and gives you a more painterly look. Try both if you have the chance and see what suits your style and preference. Hope this helps. 😊

      @@SarahNewburyArt Can i use mop brush? For watercolor portrait? Or any other?

    • @SarahNewburyArt
      @SarahNewburyArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I haven't got much experience with using a mop brush, though I did buy one a while back. They hold a lot of water so I think you would need to practice with it first to get familiar with that unless you were going for something a lot looser in style 😊
