Interesting, I also have a Sherpa rack and awning mounts. The mounts seem kinda weak and flexible. Perhaps it's designed to give before causing damage to the rack?
Gosh I doubt they’re planned to fail first, they seem slightly too beefy for that. That being said I’ve now hammered them into a big U and bolted them externally to free the roof up, that for sure work hardened it a bit so we’ll see if now it’s weakened or not!
