  • I have never hiked in the Superstition Mountains so I wanted to do a big one to challenge myself and to see the most of these mountains in one go. After reading a couple reviews of this route I wasn't too sure what to expect. I read someone took 6 hours to complete and others claim it takes 13 plus hours to finish this route. I gave myself 8 hours. I arranged for a taxi to pick me up at the other end and so I am in a race against time going into this hike blind. I am a desert rat, so this hike had my name written all over it. Ridges, summits, cactus, volcanic rock, and rattlesnakes?!?!? Sign me up!

Love the video! Truly inspiring and I give you the utmost respect. And it was great to see that I made the final edit as we ran into that rattlesnake. Until our paths cross again,Keep up the great work.

Great video as always! I’m not too familiar with Arizona’s geography. Only been to Sedona once so I love hearing you talk about the history or specifics about the mountain range!

This is one of my favorite hikes in AZ. I think the reason that you get such high time quotes is that people overestimate their hiking abilities and the constant up and down ends up wearing you out more than most mountain climbs with comparable distance and elevation gain. The first time I did the trail, the guy that was hiking with me ended up in really bad shape to the point that we contemplated getting medical evac for him. This added a lot of time to the hike so we ended up closer to 13 hours for completion. He had hiked longer trails with more elevation gain, but not with the constant up and down that this one has. Also, the entire ridge after 5057 is really easy to wander off trail on, as you saw. If you know where you are going and can actually handle the elevation gain, 7-8 hours is very reasonable.

This is considered the best hike in the vicinity of Phoenix, but considering your other hikes, it would seem walk in the park for you but with a view.

Another video! Thanks for making these really cool. I am in cottonwood right now. Almost thought about reaching out for hike ideas. Probably end up just doing the tourist thing cause my folks are with me.

I'm in Cottonwood right now as well! It is so busy in Sedona right now I don't know what to recommend. Thanks for watching as always!!

@@codiacstudios I overheated climbing on elephant head. Didnt realize it till I got down. Climbing for 11 hours on like half liter of water.

Sedona - Less crowded hikes and go early to Bear / Doe Mtn TH. Do Doe, then cross the road and do Bear. Bear's the longer and tougher hike, up and back. Wilson Mtn from either TH/side. Be sure to see both rims when on top. Amazing views north and south. I finally did Superstitions Ridgeline this January (Carney to Flatiron). Thanks for sharing you hikes.

wow I can see how easy it would be to overheat. Wilson mountain is less crowded and the best trail but, if your with your parents it might be too much. Hangover trail maybe better...

Teewinot...yeah, I remember that one of yours. Hey Cody, when you do these day hikes and climbs is it like you said in one video that you see the summit and think to yourself "I wanna get to the top of that" or do you prep by looking at All Trails or a Quad Map? I was in the Marine Corps so I like to look at a map and see where the elevation gains are and terrain appreciation is a big deal if you are going pretty far off grid (like the Wind River Range in Wyoming). And that thing about the Superstition Mountains was cool but creepy. Great video.

I like the challenge of going in semi blind. It ads to the adventure. It is like figuring out a puzzle. On some adventures I study a topo map to make sure to give myself the best chance. The summits of Sedona are very difficult to scope out. Most topo maps are not detailed enough even with the help of Google earth. Sometimes you just got to get out and see what it looks like.

Great video Btw! In hindsight would you say doing this hike in reverse make it easier? I was thinking it maybe easier to go down Flatiron at the end rather than up in the beginning. Thanks again.

Thank you! Actually, I do think the easiest way would be the direction I took. After going down off the ridge to Carney springs I remember thinking I would NOT want to come up this way.

Such a good hike! I chuckled 2 times. Once when you said you were going to finish in 7 hours ( mainly because you added 5024 and you are shooting a video) and the second time I laughed was when you were at the top of Sup Peak and said it was all down hill from here…I thought to myself, he’s never been through Carney Springs 😂. I actually take a short cut down Wave Cave Canyon since I’ve done Carney enough times to have the opinion that I don’t love it. The ridge line is a solid intro to the Superstitions but you just scratched the surface. So many awesome hikes out there.

Haha ya, I had no idea there was so much more up on the way down to carney springs. It was not exactly fun lol
