For anyone interested: "Suspicion" was written by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. Elvis was the first to record "Suspicion" on March 19, 1962 and it was released on May 18, 1962 on Elvis's Pot Luck album... where it got buried. (Thank you RCA for that brilliant move. Ugh. Mismanagement is real here, folks, I'll tell you that for sure.)
So Terry Stafford records "Suspicion" in April 1964 and his record label Crusade released his version as a single in May 1964 and it became an instant hit on the charts & would go down in music history as the song the broke The Beatles dominance of the US Billboard charts.
Terry Stafford was unable to strike lightning twice. No other song he recorded afterwards became the success for him that "Suspicion" was for him.

@@stevephillips-w5v Yes I'd read that too. However I could not find any other source to back up the Terry Stafford recording a demo in 1962 story. All I could find was that Terry Stafford recorded "Suspicion" in April 1964 and that it got released in May of 1964. So I try to find another source to back up something that I've read on, say, Wikipedia. If I can't find another source and I do decide to site Wikipedia I'll mention that.
Anyway, yes. It is noted on an other music information sources that Terry Stafford on "Suspicion" was to quote "an Elvis sound- a- like".
And I have to agree with that because when you listen to Elvis's version and you hear him sing "why torture me" his vibrato is natural, effortless.
When you listen to Terry Stafford singing that same part, his vibrato sounds a little forced. He was able to hit the high note but his vibrato had a kind of pinched sound to it.
Now that is my own humble opinion, nor am I putting Terry Stafford down. I am familiar with both versions, grew up with both versions, and while I do prefer Elvis's version, that is certainly not a knock against Terry Stafford's version. He did a really good job on it and it was a major hit for him. He was a talented singer in his own right.
