The body of this grenade was used against me in Iraq in 2003. It was placed in a small wooden box filled with loose shrapnel (nuts, bolts, rocks and glass). A crude fuse was added. It exploded just 8 feet (2 and a half meters) behind me. I was peppered in my legs, lower back and right arm with shrapnel. It resulted with the loss of a kidney and a spinal injury, but I recovered and continued my career serving another 18 years. I'd never underestimate this grenade. It is crude, but it gets the job done!
RG-42 in Polish service was used until 2019, the production in Poland stopped around end of 80's the begging of 90's. As in 88 and 89 the RGO-88 and RGZ-89 grenades were introduced to Polish Military. Those are polymer body grenades with prefabricated shrapnel in form of ball bearings balls encased in a polymer in RGO-88, and in RGZ-89 the polymer body with a shrapnel in a form of pre-cut metal wire encased in a polymer. The RGZ-89 has similar shape as RG-42 while RGO-88 has a shape similar to RGD-5. As for the RG-42 production i'm almost certain that the production was stopped just after the RGO-88 and RGZ-89 entered service, but since the production in Poland started in 1948 and continued to the end of 80's, and the volume of production per year was substantial... the stockpiles of RG-42 of Polish Army are still very high. As well as the F-1 type grenades that also were in the production in Poland since 1947 untill end of the 80's...
At least you guys had a simple grenade! Hungary was stuck with the terrible inertia-fuzed stick grenade for a long time. An extremely unreliable ignition method and thus an unreliable and unsafe grenade.
Thanks for this info. Will really help me in my Twilight 2000 campaign, as I couldn't figure out what grenades the Poles were using at the time and was just going with RGD-5, which is wrong.
Poland kinda transitioned in 1995 to RGZ-89, which is actually redesigned RG-42 . RGZ-89 uses 106 g of hexogen filling instead of TNT, and plastic body with aluminum wire included for fragments. Still uses URGZM detonator. And looks very similar (main cosmetic difference is that external walls are ribbed for your pleasure). Being filled with hexogen RGZ-89 has a little more kick to it, and is slightly ligher (30 g) due to using more plastic. Fragments wise is like 700 , in similar spread pattern to RG-42. But yeah... RG-42 was being slowly replaced by RGZ-89 so there was ... quite a bit of surplus RG-42's still around, since it was never fully phased out. Production line is dead since 1995 though, since machines were adapted to RGZ-89 where it was possible, where it was not - they were replaced.
A lot of people seem to treat 'simple' or 'crude' weapons as obviously worse, or at least beneath their notice. The Soviets especially did an incredible job of making weapons that were easy to make, and perfectly adequate. The worst weapon is the one you dont have, and the ability to make sure everyone has, for example, grenades, is incredibly valuable

I was performing a task in a joint squad with the Kraken unit, 4 hours before the operation, we met in the Cossack (Mrap) and the guys told us to show us what grenades we have, so I am the only Pole taking out the Polish RG-42 and saying that these are great grenades, the guy started laughing. and asked if we had any grenades not from WWII. from my point of view, ~uzrgm fuse grenades are much better for traps than the American ones
What about that cool looking F1 frag. That has to be a good grenade. It's been around a long time. The Russians developed that pineapples segments at angles for better and larger dispersion.??? Comments?
Glad you're well mate, keep safe. These remind me of an offensive grenade more than a defensive one, except for the scored inner liner it would pass for an offensive grenade with ease.
Seeing recent trench clearing footage revealed to me the sheer number of grenades needed. I guess it made sense to have cheap and abundant supply of them. Effective when every soldier has plenty of them.
Unfortunately still used widely in Polish armed forces even tho we already made a new offensive hand grenade called RGZ-89 which still looks kinda soviet, we also made a Thermobaric hand grenade and the early versions literally looked like the RG 42, Hopefully when I will oficially be a polish soldier I won't be using the RG 42 but hell its still kinda could be cool to use such a old hand grenade yet I would be very anxious about its age
It's fascinating how little frag was blown out of the frag sleeves. I'd have expected every little cut out to explode into shrapnel. But looks as if very little of it actually worked as intended. The one sleeve was still entirely whole! Fascinating. Also, love and support for all Ukrainian warriors, from USA.
The stamps on the late production polish grenade reminds me of the stamps on the large filter of an old polish gp-5 (MP-3-MUA) style mask I own. Funny enough the material and color of the large filter matches that of the grenade, and seems to be a trope of a lot of old soviet stuff like slings, canvas materials and such.
I think most of the RGD-33s that ever existed where expended on the eastern front before the RG 42 got into the hands of solders. Thats the thing about why theres so few examples of many historical hand grenades, they are by their nature one time use items, and the old stock is going to go to the front first before the new stock. There are many WW1 era grenades for example whos only live example is sitting under a meter of dirt in France, simply because whatever unused stock existed post WW1 was quickly used at the start of WW2
Make sense for trench warfare, if the soldiers manage to throw it in the right orientation then it would easily injure a lot of the defenders along the trench line.
Wow, I'm very impressed. I think this is probably more effective than the M2 while probably costing half as much. It does what the M2 was meant to do with the perforated metal for enhanced shrapnel. But, to be fair it was developed 26 years after the M2
If by M2 you're referring to the Mk II "Pineapple Grenade", it wasn't actually "prefragmented" it was a safer version of the Mk I which was itself a copy of a French WWI Grenade the US rapidly made upon entering WWI. So it was made long before prefragmenting the body was even considered to increase fragmentation, the "Chunks" of the Mk II are PURELY for grip so you don't drop it or have it slip out your hand. It wasn't until the M26 "Lemon Grenade" and later M33/M67 still used today that Prefragmented liners were added for enhanced fragmentation.
Hey, nice video and greetings from Germany. I always wondered how deep small shrapnel would penetrate, like e.g. from the German DM51, 6500 x 2 mm BBs.
On the other hand they will loose velocity quicker. The RGD-33 of WWII fame had a similar body, and could be equipped with a fragmentation sleeve meant to facilitate the spread of fragmentation over longer distances because the sheet metal was limited in that regard
You must have great thrust in soviet engineering and non boobytrapped fuse. If I'd be evil Russian guy, I'd forget a few crates with zero delay fuses, behind the lines......
Have you come across any Australian F1 and F2 grenades? I know we supplied quite a lot of them. Completely different to the Soviet F1 grenade of course.
