  • The Oscar II by Nuova Simonelli is one of the best values in heat-exchange boiler espresso machines in the market. Marc from WholeLatteLove.com reviews the key features of the new Oscar II with Lou Barba of N.S. For those looking to step up from a single boiler machine, the Oscar II is a low-cost option that can brew espresso and steam milk simultaneously. Optional adapters allow for brewing with ESE pods and Point capsules - a good option for low volume commercial applications which reduces the skill and training required to produce espresso.

      Hi Angela, Well, we did not show a shot from start to finish but at :48 there's an extraction of some high altitude (1,300 - 1,800 meters) Peruvian grown coffee from the Cajamarca region. It was incredibly good! Of course I'm partial to single origin high altitude coffees. I prefer those over the typical Italian style blends. It was incredibly sweet with a bold nectarine flavor with hints of honey and caramel.

    I would spend the extra $250-300 and get a rocket that looks better and has a hot water spout. I think nuovo makes great machines and it does have a larger boiler and reservoir. To me, it looks cheaper, more trendy and less classy. If you like the looks and don't mind the lack of a hot water spout I don't think you will be disappointed. Both the Appartamento and the oscar produce great coffee.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi LC, Thanks for sharing your feelings! I agree. NS makes a decent machine but the Oscar II is a bit plasticky on the exterior. Also a more solid build in the Rockets internally. If looking at an Apartamento be sure and check out the Profitec Pro 500 PID: www.wholelattelove.com/profitec-pro-500-pid-espresso-machine It's ~$100 more than the Appartamento and has much better brew temp accuracy and even better internal build.

    Hi WLL! Hoping you might be able to help me with a question 🙏 I saw a second hand used Oscar ii (unfortunately I can't afford a new machine) but it looks like it is set up for the point pods - the portafilter looks distinctly different to a regular portafilter - do you know if this would be an easy job to convert back to regular group head/portafilter to use with freshly ground coffee? Thank you so much 🙏☕☕

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Thanks for your question! See the link below for a side by side spec comparison of the 2 machines. Personally I prefer the BZ10 but that doesn't mean you should. The Oscar uses a thermo-siphon group while the BZ10 has an actively heated group. Which one is better? Think that comes down to personal preference. The BZ10 with the electrically heated group and 1.5l boiler vs. 2l in the Oscar will be up to temp and ready to brew/steam sooner than the Oscar. But the Oscar will have a little more steam in the tank - not a huge difference but if you're doing many back to back milk based drinks it might be a consideration. The BZ10 uses more traditional internal components while the Oscar has things you'll only find in NS machines. Good example of that is the electronics controller. Then there's the plastic. The Oscar has a lot of it on the outside and a bunch inside . That's part of what keeps the price down and makes it one of the most affordable HX machines. The BZ10 is all metal and has a much smaller footprint if counter space is a concern. I rarely use programmable volume dosing on semi-auto machines. Many people do and love it, but I'm not one of them. So I prefer the more straightforward on/off brewing on the BZ10. Hope this helps!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome, Programmable volume allows you to program the amount of water that is pushed through the coffee puck. So on the Oscar you could program each of the brew buttons to deliver a preset amount of water. Not every machine has this feature. Some users like this as you can put in a portafilter, push the brew button and walk away from the machine and it stops automatically. The BZ10 is manual in this regard. Flip the switch to start brewing and flip it back to stop.

    what is the difference between heat exchanger and a machine with double boiler will I see big difference is one machine going to function better than the other

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Sam! I'll link to a video below which has an animated schematic of the various boiler types. In general a dual boiler machine will have more stable brewing temps - especially those with PID. But surfing brewing temps is easier on a heat exchange machine using timed flushes before pulling a shot. The thing with that is you never really know the exact brewing temp and a bunch of things like doing lots of steaming or back to back extractions can effect brew temp beyond the flushes. DB typically have more steam available and are not as likely to have swings in brew temps with multiple extractions. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/dksbS6F4K_g/w-d-xo.html

    • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi yi, Thanks for the question. Espresso is generally brewed at 9 bar. If your brew pressure is too high then you'd adjust the maximum brewing pressure of the machine (not possible on some machines) using the OPV. If you cannot adjust brew pressure on your machine an are seeing 15 bar pressure on a guage then you could use a coarser grinder to reduce pressure when brewing.

But here is how it is done: Enter into the programming mode by pressing the 2 coffee button for 5 seconds. Fill the portafilter with coffee and attach to the machine. Press either the 1 or 2 cup button (the one you want to program. Also note if no button is pressed within 30 seconds of entering programming mode the machine returns to normal mode). Dispensing starts. Once the desired amount has been dispensed press the same button again. To exit the programming and memorize the dose press the 2 cup button for at least 5 seconds and the button stops flashing. Hope this helps. Please let us know if we can be of further assitance.
